Pune GP R1: Divya Deshmukh starts with a win

The fifth leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 had an exciting start. Four out of the five games ended decisively. IM Divya Deshmukh won her game against IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL). The Bulgarian made an incorrect recapture after losing an exchange. Divya correctly exploited it and won the game. GM R Vaishali drew with GM Koneru Humpy. GM Harika Dronavalli's passive play did not work out against GM Jiner Zhu (CHN). Birthday lady, IM Melia Salome (GEO) suffered a tough loss against IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL). Magnus Carlsen on the verge of winning Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2

The first game of the Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2 Finals between Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) was heading towards a draw. In the final moments of the endgame, Nakamura made an irrevocable mistake. Carlsen had no trouble seizing his opportunity and his opponent resigned. Vincent Keymer's (GER) knight sacrifice did not pan out against Fabiano Caruana (USA). Arjun Erigaisi continues his great form as he defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) whose exchange sacrifice did not yield anything. India's top four women - Humpy, Harika, Vaishali and Divya will battle at FIDE Pune GP

The fifth leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 will start today in Pune, Maharashtra. For the first time in a FIDE GP event, the top four Indian women - GM Koneru Humpy, GM Harika Dronavalli, GM R Vaishali and IM Divya Deshmukh will be seen in action. The ten-player round-robin tournament will also feature GM Jiner Zhu (CHN), IM Polina Shuvalova, IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL), IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL), IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (BUL) and IM Melia Salome (MGL). Women's World Championship 2025 Game 7: Ju Wenjun takes a 5-2 lead

After the first 6 games of the Women's World Championship 2025 ended in Shanghai, Ju Wenjun led the event with a score of 4-2. The focus now shifted to the city of Chongqing and we got another decisive encounter. It was the reigning World Champion who struck once again and extended her lead to 5-2. Tan Zhongyi is now struggling big time and only a miracle can help her get back into this match. Game 7 report.

2nd Namma Bengaluru GM R5-6: Pranav Anand scores a double hat-trick, gains sole lead and withdraws

GM Pranav Anand scored a double hat-trick of wins, emerged sole leader and withdrew from 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM 2025. The decision to play only six rounds was informed to the organizers before the start of the tournament as he had already committed to major tournaments in Spain this month. In the fifth and sixth round, he defeated GM Deepan Chakkravarthy and GM Levan Pantsualaia (GEO) in two contrasting battles. The first one was a sharp encounter while the second one was a positional skirmish. Pranav's withdrawal resulted in, IM Ethan Vaz, GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) and IM Padmini Rout gaining the lead 5.5/6. Tomorrow is the sole rest day. Arjun Erigaisi's immortal floors Nepomniachtchi

Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR) defeated their respective opponents Vincent Keymer (GER) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) to earn their place in the Finals. The reigning Fischer Random World Champion got the better of the previous leg winner, Keymer who made an incorrect exchange sacrifice. Caruana missed a tactical shot and lost a crucial pawn. The most incredible game of the day, tournament and quite possibly in Chess960/Freestyle chess was played by Arjun Erigaisi against Ian Nepomniachtchi. Arjun was in a must-win situation. Not only did he manage to win the game, he also won the next one in 10'+10". He drew the second tie-break game to setup a clash against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) for the fifth place. 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM R4: Deepan Chakkravarthy crushes Karen Grigoryan

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored a crushing victory against GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) in Round 4 of 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM 2025. The second seeded Armenian went wrong in the Sicilian Dragon which allowed Deepan to seize his opportunity with a beautiful thematic knight sacrifice. The remaining six players at perfect score are - GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM), GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO), GM Pranav Anand, IM Sanket Chakravarty, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha and IM Rajesh Vav. Viani defeated IM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO). Women’s World Championship 2025: Wenjun Ju two points ahead at the halfway mark

Wenjun Ju has taken a firm lead 4-2 against Zhongyi Tan after the first six games at FIDE Women's World Championship. After a draw in the first game, Zhongyi Tan, the Challenger, struck first. However, the defending champion, Wenjun delivered the equalizer in the third game. The fourth game was a well contested draw. Wenjun had to grind a lot in the fifth game in a rook and opposite color bishop endgame. In the sixth game, Zhongyi faltered in a relatively balanced queen and knight endgame. The first game of both Semifinals ended in draws at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. Vincent Keymer (GER) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR) will get the white pieces against Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) respectively in the second Classical game. In the battle of fifth place, both matches had a decisive game each. Ian Nepomniachtchi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated Arjun Erigaisi and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave respectively. 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM R2-3: Paras Dilip Bhoir beats two IMs in-a-row, scores a hat-trick

Paras Dilip Bhoir defeated two IMs on the second day to maintain a perfect score at 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM Category A (>1900) 2025. The 16-year-old made a fantastic start at his debut GM tournament. He defeated IM Ajay Karthikeyan and IM Srihari L consecutively in Round 2 and 3 respectively. He is now the sole untitled player among the 19 players who are at a perfect 3/3. 11-year-old Avirat Chauhan scored the first big upset of the tournament as he defeated GM Boris Savchenko, one of the favorites to win the event. Ayush Sharma awesome at Khelo Chess India Masters Rapid and Blitz 2025

IM Ayush Sharma scored 17.5/21 to win Khelo Chess India Masters 2025. He won both Rapid and Blitz events scoring 12/14 and 5.5/7 each respectively. 11-year-old CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma scored 15/21 to finish second. He secured second place in both Rapid and Blitz - 10/14 and 5/7. IM Anup Deshmukh was placed third with score of 13/21. WIM Angela Franco Valencia (COL) scored an impressive 4.5/7 to finish third. She scored 8.5/21 to finish fifth overall. The two-day seven-round each Rapid and Blitz tournament was organized by ChessBase India at Sage International School in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on 5th and 6th April 2025. This is Ayush's second and third tournament triumph of the year.

Hikaru Nakamura (USA) defeated Arjun Erigaisi in the second game of Quarterfinals at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. The reigning World Fischer Random champion, showed his fantastic positional understanding, culminating with tactics to advance to the Semifinals. He will face Vincent Keymer (GER) in the Semis. The Germany no.1 knocked out Ian Nepomniachtchi. Their match is the only one which went to the tie-breaks. Keymer won the first tie-break and drew the next one. Fabiano Caruana (USA) won the second Classical game to eliminate Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). The top seeds had a relatively smooth start at 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM Category A (>1900) 2025. Generally GM tournaments witnesses some major upsets in the first round. That almost would have happened, if Sailesh R capitalized on his opportunity against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO). The top three seeds - GM Iniyan Pa, GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) and GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) won their respectively games. A total of 316 players including 20 GMs, 40 IMs, 2 WGMs and 5 WIMs are taking part from 11 countries across the world in Open A. Paras Dilip Bhoir scored a perfect 9/9 to win 7th Satish Sabnis Rapid Rating Open 2025. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Pushkar Dere and FM Vedant Panesar scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹325200 + 70 trophies. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹18000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The one-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Mumbai Suburban District Chess Association at Uttar Bharatiya Sangh in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 6th April 2025.
