MPL 35th National U-9 Round 5-6:Sharvaanica and Arpita become co-leaders

7-year-old Sharvaanica AS (Tamil Nadu, 1050) continues her domination in the MPL 35th National Under-9 Girls Championships. After 6 rounds, she is jointly leading the event with Arpita Amey Patnakar (Gujrat, 1093), both of them scoring 5.5/6 so far. In the open section, draws in the top board ensured that no clear leader is decided yet. MPL 48th National Women R3: Sakshi, Aashna, Vrushali and Bristy make a perfect start

Top four boards ended in a draw in the third round of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. WIM Mounika Akshaya (AP), WFM Vishwa Shah (MAH), Nimmy A G (KER) and Rutuja Bakshi (MAH) held their higher rated opponents WGM Vantika Agrawal (DEL), WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH), WGM Mary Ann Gomes (MAH) and IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) to a draw each respectively. Both Divya and Bhakti had great chances to score a win, yet they were unable to capitalize on their chances. WIM Aashna Makhija (DEL), WIM Sakshi Chitlange (MAH), WFM Vrushali Umesh Deodhar (MAH) and WCM Bristy Mukherjee (WB) scored a win each to make a hat-trick. MPL 59th National Senior R6: Sethuraman topples Abhijeet, joins Mitrabha in the lead

GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) defeated the tournament leader GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) in the sixth round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship. Abhijeet ignored Sethuraman's attack on the kingside and had to pay a heavy price for it. Meanwhile, GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) converted his minute endgame advantage into a full point against GM Visakh N R (RSPB). Both Sethuraman and Mitrabha are at 5.5/6 each. They are followed by four players - GM Abhijeet, GM Venkatesh M R (PSPB), IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) and IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H (RSPB) at 5/6 each. Day 2 report: Magnus Carlsen well set to become World Rapid Champion 2022

Magnus Carlsen became the triple champion in 2019 - in classical, rapid and blitz. However, in 2021, he lost both his rapid and blitz titles to Abdusattorov and MVL respectively. This year, the Norwegian has come with great willpower in order to reclaim his dominance on the world of chess. And he is doing it in style at the World Rapid Championships 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. After 9 rounds, he is in sole lead with 7.5/9. In the women's section we have three leaders - Tan Zhongyi, Goryachkina and the surprise Savitha Shri. All three of them on 6.5/8. A detailed day 2 report.

MPL 48th National Women R2: Sunyuktha shines against Isha

Sunyuktha C M N (TN) scored a clinical victory over WIM Isha Sharma (KAR) in the second round of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. WCM Bristy Mukherjee (WB) defeated her statemate WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) after the latter missed a checkmate combination. Reigning Telangana State Women and Junior Girls champion, Sarayu Velpula held WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) to a draw. A total of 22 women are at 2/2 including the top two seeds WGM Vantika Agrawal (DEL) and the defending champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH). MPL 35th National U-9 Round 4: 7 players with perfect score in Open

The number of players at the top with a perfect score is slowly reducing, as the rounds go by. After Round 4, there are only 7 players with a perfect score: Aarav Sarbalia, Aarav A, Avirat Chauhan, Aaryan Amol Waghmare, Brijesh Poola, Madhavendra Pratap Sharma and Balanandan Ayappan. Whereas in the girls section, there are only 2 players with a 4/4 score: Sharvaanica AS and Bruhathi Kondisetti, who will clash on Round 5. GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) defeated IM Koustav Chatterjee (WB) to become sole leader at 5/5. Top four games went in favor of White at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB), GM Visakh N R (RSPB) and IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) won their respective games against GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB), FM Vedant Panesar (MAH) and IM Nubairshah Shaikh (MAH). They are joined by GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) in the chase at 4.5/5 each. Sharvaanica A S hails from a small town in the Ariyalur District of Tamil Nadu. She is only 7 years old, yet she has made a strong 3/3 start in the 35th MPL National U-9 Championships! In the Open section, the top seed Madhavendra Pratap Sharma (1585, MP) continued his domination by winning Rounds 2 and 3. As many as 15 players have a perfect score so far in the Open section, and 8 players in the girls section. With 8 more rounds to go, this is still anyone's tournament. World Rapid 2022 Day 1: Magnus Carlsen channels the spirit of Bobby Fischer

The World Rapid Championships 2022 kicked off on the 26th of December 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Five rounds were played in the open section and four rounds in women. We have four leaders in the open with 4.5/5 and they are Magnus Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi, Vladimir Fedoseev and Jorden van Foreest. MPL 48th National Women R1: Dakshita defies Soumya

14-year-old Dakshita Kumawat (RAJ) held the former National Women's champion, IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to a draw. The teenager played solid out of the Trompowsky opening and did not make any significant mistake throughout the game. The Asian U-12 double Gold medalist, Saparya Ghosh (WB) got herself a good opportunity to split the point with WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) in the final moments of the rook endgame. Unfortunately, she was unable to seize her opportunity. 13-year-old Jagadale Ishwari held her statemate from Maharashtra, WIM Mrudul Dehankar to a draw. MPL 35th National U-9 Championships kick off in Indore

The MPL National U-9 Chess Championship kicked off on Christmas day, 25th December in IPS Academy, Indore! A total of 309 players from all across India are participating in this mega event - 214 players in the Open section, and 105 in the girls category. The Inauguration ceremony took place at 2 PM, and the first round of the tournament started 3:00 PM. Indore's IAS Collector Dr. Iliyaraja T was invited as the Chief guest in the opening ceremony! This will be an 11-round classical event from 25th December to 2nd January. We at ChessBase India will bring you all the action live!

GM Iniyan P (TN) drew with his statemate and top seed GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) in the fourth round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. FM Vedant Panesar (MAH) also shared the point with IM Aronyak Ghosh (WB). GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) defeated the reigning Asian Junior 2022 Open champion, IM Harshavardhan G B (TN) and IM Koustaav Chatterjee (WB) prevailed over IM Nitin S (TN). A glorious opening ceremony in Kazakh style at the World Rapid and Blitz 2022

The World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2022 kick off in Almaty, Kazakhstan on the 26th of December 2022. On 25th of December, one day before the start of the event, there was an opening ceremony held at the venue. The first thing you notice when you enter the premises of the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace is how massive it is and how spacious it is going to be for the players. Vantika Agrawal is the top seed at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022

MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship starts today at Sanjay Ghodawat University in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. For the first time since 2019, it will be a full-fledged event, which means there will be 11 rounds instead of 9 like the previous edition held earlier this year. The time control is also back to 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1. The total prize fund has been increased by ₹500000, each prize got increased by ₹50000. WGM Vantika Agrawal is the top seed of the tournament, The defending champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh is the second seed and former National Women's champion, IM Soumya Swaminathan will be third seed. University of Calcutta reclaims East Zone Inter University Chess Championship 2022 after five years

University of Calcutta Men's team have been making a second place finish for the past three editions from 2018 to 2021. That changed on 10th December. The team finally ended their chase and claimed the first place. Both University of Calcutta and the defending champions, Adamas University scored an unbeaten 11/12. The match between them also ended in a 2-2 draw with four decisive games in the penultimate round. However, the former won became champion due to having more game points than the latter. Subhabrata Roy and IM Utsab Chatterjee won the individual board prizes from the winning team. Three teams scored 9/11. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya was adjudged third according to tie-breaks.
