MPL 59th National Senior R11: Karthik, Aronyak and Hari Madhavan score superb victories

GM Karthik Venkataraman, IM Aronyak Ghosh and Hari Madhavan N B scored sensational victories to throw the tournament wide open. Karthik defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta in an thrilling encounter. IM Aronyak Ghosh just simply played outstanding chess against GM Sethuraman S P. India's latest International Master, Hari Madhavan N B defeated GM Mitrabha Guha to join the four-way lead with Karthik, Koustav and Aronyak. The MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022 is undoubtedly heading for a close and exciting finish. MPL 35th National U-9 Round 10: Karnataka domination across Open and girls

Both the leaders of the Open section and Girls section kept up their form in the penultimate round of the MPL 35th National Under-9 Championships going on right now at Indore Public School. Pratitee Bordoloi (1201, Karnataka) defeated Aadya Ranganath (1327, Karnataka) in girls, and Aarav Sarbalia (1458, Karnataka) continued his domination with a win over R Nijesh (1365, Tamil Nadu). Both of the leaders are hailing from Karnataka! The final round 11 starts from 2nd January at 9:30 AM IST, and the prize distribution ceremony will take place at afternoon time. Daakshin Arun and Sneha Halder win MPL 35th National Under-13 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2022

CM Daakshin Arun (TN) and Sneha Halder (WB) scored an unbeaten 10/11 and 9.5/11 each respectively to win MPL 35th National Under-15 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022 respecttively. Both of them finished a full point ahead of the competition. Daakshin did not face the remaining podium finishers. Sneha drew with the runner-up Sachi Jain (DEL) 8.5/11. Daeevik Wadhawan (DEL), Yash Bharadia (RAJ) and Dhruva Thota (TEL) scored 9/11 each. They were placed second, third and fourth; in the Girls, Sachi Jain, Saparya Ghosh (WB), Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH) and Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH) scored 9/11 each. MPL 59th National Senior R10: Abhijeet joins Koustav at the top

IM Koustav Chatterjee made a great escape against GM Mitrabha Guha in the tenth round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Mitrabha missed a good opportunity to push for a win in the bishop vs knight endgame. IM Srihari L R continues his unbeaten streak as he drew with GM Sethuraman S P. GM Abhijeet Gupta registered his third win in-a-row. This time it was against IM Vignesh N R who tried to do too much after Abhijeet's strategic exchange sacrifice. MPL 48th National Women R6: Mary moves ahead

WGM Mary Ann Gomes halted WIM Aashna Makhija's unbeaten run at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Mary defeated Aashna comfortably as the former showed her endgame knowledge in earning the full point. WGM Divya Deshmukh won a sharp battle against WGM Srija Seshadri who found it quite difficult to defend the complex situation she got herself in. IM Soumya Swaminathan and IM Bhakti Kulkarni scored comfortable victories to join Aashna and Divya at 5/7 each. MPL 35th National U-9 Round 8-9: Pratitee takes sole lead

The 8th and 9th round of the MPL National Under-9 Championships saw a lot of action. The fight for sole lead continued in both the Open and Girls section. While Aarav Sarbalia continues to hold his lead with two consecutive wins in Round 8 and 9, it is not the case in girls. Pratitee Bordoloi has emerged as the new leader, defeating Sharvaanica AS in Round 8 and Shashini Puvi in Round 9. MPL 59th National Senior R9: Koustav subdues Sethuraman

IM Koustav Chatterjee ended GM Sethuraman S P's domination in the ninth round at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. The teenager IM exchanged pieces at a regular interval and arrived at a rook and minor piece which was slightly advantageous for him. The seasoned GM made some inaccurate decisions in an already difficult endgame which cost him the point and the lead. GM Abhijeet Gupta scored his second win in-a-row as he defeated GM Deep Sengupta using his tactical alertness to get back in the chase along with Sethuraman, GM Mitrabha Guha and IM Srihari L R. MPL 48th National Women R5: Aashna astounds Sakshi

WIM Aashna Makhija outplayed WIM Sakshi Chitlange to emerge sole leader at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Aashna's preparation worked out in her favor to take her score to 5/5. Former multi-time National Women champion, WGM Mary Ann Gomes is the only player trailing her by a half point 4.5/5. The exciting battle between the top two seeds WGM Vantika Agrawal and WGM Divya Deshmukh ended in a draw. Although it was Vantika who was better for the majority of the game. Magnus Carlsen and Bibisara Assaubayeva are the World Blitz 2022 champions, Humpy Silver

Magnus Carlsen has become World Blitz champion for the sixth time in his career. He won it in 2009, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2022. The Norwegian also became World Triple Crown champion for the third time in his career (2014, 2019 and 2022). Unlike 2019, this time Carlsen became a clear champion by scoring 16/21, a full point ahead of Hikaru Nakamura (USA) 15/21. Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored the same and finished third on tie-breaks. The defending champion, IM Bibisara Assaubayaeva (KAZ) won her last five games to clinch the Gold 13/17. Koneru Humpy scored a magnificent 8.5/9 in her last nine games to secure Silver 12.5/17. GM Sethuraman S P defeated GM Venkatesh M R convincingly to gain sole lead at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Venkatesh was unable to make the most out of the white pieces. He chose an opening which his opponent equalized with ease, accepting the exchange sacrifice did him no good and eventually Sethuramana invaded through the back rank. MPL 48th National Women R4: Sakshi and Aashna are the coleaders

Maharashtra's WIMs Sakshi Chitlange and Aashna Makhija won their respective games to maintain their perfect score 4/4. Vrushali was unable to find a proper defense in the endgame against Sakshi. Aashna got a better position out of the opening against Bristy and it was just a matter of time for her to score a full point. Sakshi and Aashna, the coleaders will inevitably face each other in the fifth round. WIM Aakanksha Hagawane could not get out of the gate against WFM Vishwa Shah. Raunak Sadhwani and Harika Dronavalli are the Indian players who had a great first day at World Blitz 2022. While Raunak scored an impressive 8.5/12, Harika made 6.5/9. She is a full point behind the leaders GM Valentina Gunina and IM Polina Shuvalova. IM Tania Sachdev and IM Padmini Rout are at 6/9 each. In the Open section, Hikaru Nakamura had a fantastic day. He scored 10/12 and currentlly he is a full point ahead of Anish Giri, Magnus Carlsen, Daniil Dubov, Haik Martirosyan and Richard Rapport. All of them are at 9/12 each. The 7th Round of the MPL 35th National U-9 Championships finally became the round where a clear leader was decided in both the sections - Open and Girls. Aarav Sarbalia (1458, Karnataka) took down Niroshan Thanikachalam (1283, Tamil Nadu) in the Open section to take sole lead with 6.5/7. In the girls section, Sharvaanica A S (1050, Tamil Nadu) defeated her co-leader Arpita Amey Patnakar (1093, Gujrat) to take sole lead with 6.5/7. Magnus Carlsen and Tan Zhongyi are World Rapid 2022 Champions, Savitha wins bronze

The World Rapid Championships 2022 came to an end with some thrilling action. The Gold medal in the open section went to Magnus Carlsen for the 4th time in his career, but it was not without drama. The silver medal went to the young talent Vincent Keymer who played an exquisite event and the bronze medal went to Fabiano Caruana. In the women's section Tan Zhongyi continued her good run by winning the gold. She beat Dinara Saduakassova in the tiebreaks. The local girl had to settle for silver and the bronze went to India's 15-year-old Savitha Shri.

MPL 59th National Senior R7: Venkatesh makes it a three-way race

GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) and GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) had a quick 13-move draw. It allowed, GM Venkatesh M R (PSPB) to catch up as he defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) with a very nice positional play in the Catalan. This was Abhijeet's second consecutive loss at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Sethuraman, Mitrabha and Venkatesh are at 6/7 each. They are followed by eight players - five IMs and three GMs at 5.5/7. Venkatesh vs Sethuraman and Leon vs Mitrabha are the top two clashes of the eighth round, which starts today at 2 p.m. IST today.
