MPL 59th National Senior R3: The Systematic Pawn Structure Fragmentation

IM Nitin S (RSPB) scored the biggest upset of the third round at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. He defeated GM Leon Luke Mendonca (Goa) by systematically fragmenting his opponent pawn structure in a game arising out of Caro-Kann opening. 52-year-old Laishram Imocha (PSPB) won against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB) when the latter overloaded his rook in an already dwindling position. Shreyansh Daklia (CHT) scored an upset victory against 50th National Junior champion, IM Neelash Saha when the latter tried too hard in a drawn endgame. Each year ends for a professional chess player with the world rapid and blitz. The new year is spent on the flight back home! And this year is no different! The World Rapid and Blitz 2022 Championships are going to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We have a total of 180 players in the open section, 100 in women. Out of which we have 22 Indians in all (15 in open and 7 in women). Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura will be the favourites to win the title, but the event will also witness young talents like Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin. A total of US $1 million at stake. We bring you a curtain raiser.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov wins 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022 with five rounds to spare

What is the true sign of a champion? How you get back up from a forgettable event. The reigning World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) did just that. After a disappointing performance at the Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid and Blitz, the 18-year-old regrouped himself and delivered a strong performance with an exact same format at the 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022. He scored 25.5/36 and won the tournament with five rounds to spare. That is undoubtedly a remarkable performance and a much needed one for him, just two days before he starts his World title defense. He has already had a fantastic year by winning Gold at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022. Will he successfully defend his World Rapid title? We will know on 28th December 2022. MPL 59th National Senior R2: The Deep Queen sac

19-year-old Akshit Kumar J (AP) scored the first big upset of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. He defeated GM-elect IM Arghyadip Das who could not find the best way to save his pinned knight. Multi-time Hastings Masters winner and Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB) sacrificed his queen against the reigning National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM). While Deep did not follow through correctly and finish things off earlier, nevertheless he managed to score the full point. Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri (TEL), M Anees M (TN), Dhananjay S (CHT), Shreyansh Daklia (CHT), Kartavya Anadkat (GUJ), Grahesh Y (AP), Rupam Mukherjee (WB) and Tapan Badamundi (ODI) held their respective Grandmaster opponents to a draw each. Kirill Alekseenko wins Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022

Kirill Alekseenko drew with Hans Niemann (USA) to win Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field 8.5/10 and did not require Playoffs. Hans defeated M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in Armageddon after they traded wins in their Playoff Blitz finals. Thus, Hans finished second and Tabatabaei third. GM Karthikeyan Murali defeated Turkish prodigy 11-year-old IM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus to finish eighth after losing Playoffs against GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR). Karthikeyan became the sole Indian to make a top ten finish. Both Shantanu Bhambure and Ilamparthi A R scored their respective final IM-norms. Shantanu became India's latest International Master. The top seeds avoided any major upset in the first round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. For the first time in National, there are 70 live boards. Thus, the propensity to find beautiful game(s) in each round increases by that much. It goes without saying that not only for the viewers, it helps the players also to see the current form in the tournament of their future opponents. Aarav Sinha (DEL) and Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP) held GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB) and GM Sriram Jha (LIC) to a draw. Sharvaanica - The 7-year-old who wins all her tournaments with a 100% score

Sharvaanica is just 7 years old, but whichever tournament she takes part in, she tends to win it with a score of 100%. Take for example the nationals under-7 championship that happened in 2022. Sharva (as her loved ones call her), won it with a score of 11.0/11. Then she played in Sri Lanka at the Asian School Championships 2022. She won the under-7 classical, rapid and blitz. But not only did she win, she won all three events with a 100% score. How does she manage to do that? We try to decode her play in this interview with the help of her coach GM Vishnu Prasanna. Sharvaanica is also awarded the March 2022 YouTube memberships from ChessBase India of Rs.53,365 so that she can continue growing in her chess career at a rapid pace.

While the staging of ‘Open’ event is common & understood, lots of questions were raised as regards to U13 – why an Under-13 event? What purpose will it serve? We get answers to these questions from none other than Praful Zaveri - the brainchild of this event! The first of this article is the flashback leading to the birth of this tournament (penned by him in 2016) while the 2nd part will answer as to what it has achieved during the past 6-seasons!

Shoot for the Moon, land among the Stars - The Story of Md. Imran

Do you remember a time when you came so close to achieving something you worked very hard on, only for tragedy to befall you when you needed things to go your way the most? Something which distracts you from the task at hand, leaving you regretting that you couldn't give your best. Meet Mohd. Imran, who at the age of eight and half years first picked up chess with a humble 1035 Elo, and 4 years later is sitting at a rating of 2279. He has played around 24 tournaments since he started playing chess, with tremendous increases in rating more recently, sporting a 284 ELO gain in the last 3 months alone. Things are very promising for the boy, but lately, setbacks have been preventing him from crossing the 2400 ELO barrier, which he says is his current goal. The boy is supported by HelpChess Foundation for his laptop through the funds donated by Suhani Shah.

Mumbai gets its 2nd Chess Grandmaster, Aditya Mittal

Aditya crossed 2500 in the live ratings 2500.6 to be exact, after he drew with Spain no.1 GM Francisco Vallejo Pons in the sixth round of 3rd El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament. The 16-year-old earned his first GM-norm at Serbia Open 2021 Masters. Then he scored his second GM-norm at the 2nd El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament 2021. His final GM-norm was scored at Serbia Open 2022 Masters. After getting close to the 2500 live ratings several times, Aditya finally crossed the barrier. It was well-known that the teenager has the strength of a GM, it was just a matter of time. That time has finally come for him. He becomes Maharashtra's 11th and Mumbai's 2nd GM.  

Kishore Kumar Jaganathan conquers 1st Karimganj Rating Open 2022 with a round to spare

Kishore Kumar Jaganathan scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win 1st Karimganj Rating Open 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the field. including a win over the top seed of the tournament, Y Dhanabir Singh. The Tamil Nadu lad also gained 52.6 Elo rating points in the process. Kishan Kumar of Bihar and Rupam Mukherjee of West Bengal scored 8/10 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Sethuraman is the top seed at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022

MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship starts today in New Delhi. For the first time since 2018, it will be a full-fledged event, which means there will be 13 rounds instead of 11 like the last two rated editions. The time control is also back to 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1. The total prize fund remains unchanged from the previous edition which took place in March this year. Sethuraman S P is the top seed of the tournament, The captain of India at the World Teams 2022, Vaibhav Suri will be the second seed and five-times Commonwealth Gold medalist Abhijeet Gupta will be the third seed. Kirill Alekseenko inches away from clinching Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022

Kirill Alekseenko drew with the top seed Yangyi Yu (CHN) to maintain his sole lead 8/9 at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. He is now a half point ahead of the competition. Hans Niemann (USA) is the only player who is in the chase 7.5/9. Alekseenko needs a draw in the final round to win the tournament without needing a Playoff. However, a loss would make Hans the winner. Seven players are at 7/9. B Adhiban is the sole Indian among them. He will face M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in the final round. Bristy Mukherjee wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 Women Rapid

WCM Bristy Mukherjee and Alka Das scored an unbeaten 6/7 each at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Women Rapid. They were placed first and second according to tie-breaks. This was the first time a Women's only Rapid event took place at the Tata Steel Chess Festival, with an equal prize fund as the Rapid Rating Open event of ₹100000. Top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. Three players - WIM Arpita Mukherjee, WIM Chandreyee Hajra and Raima Bhattacharjee scored 5.5/7 each.
