FIDE World Cup 2021 R4 TB: Carlsen makes his way to the Round of 16

The world champion Magnus Carlsen beat Radoslaw Wojtaszek 2.5-1.5 to set a clash with Andrey Esipenko in the Pre Quarter-Finals of the FIDE World Cup. Esipenko defeated Carlsen's second Dubov in the tie-breaks. Vasif Durarbayli traded wins with Abdusattorov and eventually won the match 4-2 to advance to the next stage, where he will face Vidit Gujrathi. Goryachkina beat former women's world champion Stefanova in the tie-breaks to advance to the Quarter-Finals. Alekseenko wins Accentus Chess960 in Biel

Kirill Alekseenko scored 4.5/7 to win the Accentus Chess960, opening event of the 54th edition of Biel International Chess Festival. The standings of this event is used to determine the seeding of the Classical segment and if required, as a tie-break too after the conclusion of the Grandmaster Triathlon (GMT). The Rapid event will take place on Sunday 25th July. Monday 26th July and Sunday 1st August will be two rest days. The Classical part will start from 27th July and conclude on 4th August. Hyderabad Chess Centre launched by and for the chess lovers

Hyderabad has remained a sports loving city for a long time. The joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana witnessed many strong international chess tournaments. 17 chess enthusiasts and players decided to launch Hyderabad Chess Centre on 7th July 2021 which was inaugurated by K S Prasad, President of Telangana State Chess Association in presence of Guest of honour Mr. Jaikar Daniel, President, YMCA's of Greater Hyderabad and special invitees IM  P D S Girinath and former National 'A' player G V Srinivasa Rao. The idea for the formation of this chess centre is to give a place to practice chess, exchange knowledge and information with the enthusiasts of the sport. FIDE World Cup 2021 R4.2: Vidit storms into Round of 16

Vidit scored another emphatic victory over Jeffery Xiong to eliminate him and secure his own place in the Round of 16 at FIDE World Cup 2021. The India no.3 has become India no.2 now as Harikrishna drew his must-win game against Tabatabaei and got knocked out. Praggnanandhaa's fantastic debut the World Cup has come to an end as he lost to Vachier-Lagrave. Carlsen misses a win against Wojtaszek and now he will have to play tie-breaks for the first time in this event. Born on 10th of January 1998, S.L. Narayanan is 23 years old. His current rating is 2624 and he is currently ranked no.9 in the country. Narayanan's story begins from the point where he saw his mother playing chess in a tournament and has now reached a point where he is crossing swords with the best in the world. From his father leaving his job, to his sister leaving chess - this Kerala GM has seen too many sacrifices both on and off the board. Apart from exceling at chess, Narayanan also scored 1200/1200 in his 12th grade examinations! FIDE World Cup 2021 R4.1: Vidit beats Xiong, Pragg holds MVL to a draw

Vidit scored a fantastic win over Jeffery Xiong who blundered in time pressure. The India no.3 finished the game with a beautiful combination which should make it to the future books on tactics. Praggnanandhaa showed that he is well-prepared against Vachier-Lagrave as he managed to hold a draw against the world no.16. Harikrishna suffered a shocking loss as he blundered in the endgame against Tabatabaei. It was a tough day for the Uzbekistan players as Abdusattorov, Jumabayev and Sindarov - all three of them suffered their first loss of the event. New: Master Class Vol. 14: Vasily Smyslov

Vasily Smyslov defeated Mikhail Botvinnik at the second attempt in 1957 and thus became the seventh world champion in chess history, but had to relinquish the title in a rematch the following year. After that Smyslov belonged to the absolute world elite for many years. His performance in the 1982-1985 World Championship cycle was sensational, when he defeated Robert Hübner and Zoltan Ribli one after the other in the candidate matches and only lost in the final to the young Garry Kasparov - Smyslov himself was 62 years old at that time! FIDE World Cup 2021 R3 TB: Vidit wins a thriller against Adhiban

The highly anticipated match between the two top Indian players at the biggest stage - FIDE World Cup, exceeded all expectations. Fans of the sport, the entire chess universe was extremely excited about this slobber-knocker match. The tie-break started with two draws, then both players traded wins, including a flag fall for Vidit. They made a bare king draw before Vidit beating Adhiban one final time to advance to Round 4 and avoid Armageddon. Both players truly gave their all on the board and left a piece of themselves there. FIDE World Cup 2021 R3.2: Harikrishna through to Round 4, Adhiban makes a comeback

Harikrishna played solid to make a draw with Lupulescu and secure his place in the fourth round of FIDE World Cup 2021. Praggnanandhaa almost played his immortal game to beat Krasenkow for the second consecutive game, but time was not on his side. Adhiban made a fierce comeback by scoring an equalizer against Vidit. Nihal and Harika both drew their respective games to get eliminated from the tournament. While Nihal was not given any fragment of chance by his opponent Andreikin, Harika's relentless pursuit of comeback almost forcefully opened a window of opportunity for her, but it was not meant to be in the first edition of FIDE Women's World Cup. Vishy Anand wins No-Castling World Masters against Kramnik

The fourth game of No Castling World Masters was an interesting draw between the legends - Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. Anand won the four-game match 2.5-1.5. He had an opportunity to gain the upper hand in the middlegame but he did not take it and Kramnik managed to force a draw by perpetual check eventually. The maestro continued his great form and remained undefeated in all four games. Albeit a small sample size, these four games without the castling rights for each player, yielded 75% draws and only 25% decisive results which is almost as much as a regular game result odds. FIDE World Cup 2021 R3.1: Harikrishna, Vidit and Pragg score

Harikrishna, Vidit and Praggnanandhaa won their respective first game in the third round of FIDE World Cup 2021. They just need a draw in the second game to advance to the fourth round. Both Harikrishna and Praggnanandhaa played the endgame very well to score a victory each. Adhiban just tried to do too much which cost him the game against Vidit. Nihal, Adhiban and Harika must win today to force tie-breaks. Arguably the must-see game of the day is Dubov's win over Malakhov. The second game of Round 3 starts today at 5:30 p.m. IST. Raunak Sadhwani wins 40th St. Veiter Lemans Open 2021

15-year-old GM Raunak Sadhwani started as the top seed of the 40th International St.Veiter Jacques Lemans Open 2021. He won it convincingly by scoring eight wins, only one draw, performed at 2703 to win the tournament. This is his best performance in his ongoing Europe tour since he finished second at the Silver Lake Open last month. Raunak received €1200 cash prize, a trophy and a Jacques Leman watch. The icing on the cake was Actor-Director-Singer, Farhan Akhtar congratulating him in a tweet for winning the event after Raunak celebrated his triumph by watching his latest movie, Toofan.

Proposals to change FIDE's rating and title regulations

After Abhimanyu Mishra achieved his GM title and became the youngest GM in the history of chess, breaking Karjakin's long-standin record of 2 decades, the World Championship Challenger Nepomniachtchi tweeted, "I’m dazzled with the new record, so I’d like to suggest some changes to the order of conferring titles. For example, one of the norms must be fulfilled in an open tournament..." While Abhimanyu and many other youngsters have achieved this title fair and square, FIDE seems to have decided that it is time for them to have a fresh look at how the ratings work and the titles are conferred. NC World Masters Game 3: Kramnik escapes with a draw against Anand

The third game of No Castling World Masters after a rest day, between the legends - Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik was an exciting one. It seemed like Anand is going to win the endgame but Kramnik somehow managed to escape with a draw. Sasikiran has won the No Castling Chess Sparkassen Online Open Finals with an unbeaten 6.0/7. He has earned an invitation to the 49th International Dortmund Chess Days in 2022. Anand is leading the four-game match 2-1. Will he win the match or Kramnik is going to level the score?
