ChessMood Open R6: Samvel Ter-Sahakyan regains sole lead

GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan defeated compatriot IM David Shahinyan in the sixth round to regain his sole lead 5.5/6 at ChessMood Open. Four players are trailing by a half point. They are - Narayanan S L, Levan Pantsulaia (GEO), Abhimanyu Puranik and Alexey Goganov (RUS). All three of them won their respective games in the sixth round. IM Bharath Subramaniyam H had a 116-move long marathon draw against GM Arman Mikaelyan (ARM). Arjun, Gukesh, Sandipan and Karthik won their respective games. Tamil Nadu State Government felicitates players with 1 crore 98 lacs cash award

The state of Tamil Nadu has been the strongest state in Indian chess for a very long time. It has the highest number of GMs - 24 out of the 70 GMs of the country so far. On Thursday 7th October, Tamil Nadu State Government felicitated 14 players of their state who have won Gold in FIDE Online Olympiad 2020, FIDE World Teams 2019, Bronze in FIDE Online Olympiad 2021, along with the newly minted Grandmaster, Woman Grandmaster and International Master. This monumental acknowledgement of the efforts will definitely boost the spirit of the hardworking players, coaches and parents. Samvel Ter-Sahakyan drew with Praggnanandhaa in the fifth round to maintain his lead 4.5/5. He is joined by fellow countryman IM David Shahinyan (ARM) after the fifth round of ChessMood Open. The tournament leaders will face each other in the sixth round. Ten players are at a half point behind the leader. Narayanan S L, Praggnanandhaa and Abhimanyu Puranik are the three Indians among them. IMs Mitrabha Guha and P Shyam Nikhil held Armenian GMs Shant Sargsyan and Manuel Petrosyan to a draw each, respectively. Samvel Ter-Sahakyan beat the top seed of the tournament, Narayanan S L to emerge as the sole leader 4.0/4 at the conclusion of the fourth round of ChessMood Open. Praggnanandhaa is the only Indian who is a half point behind the leader. They will face each other in the fifth round. Apart from Abhimanyu, Karthik and Mitrabha's win, it was a tough day for the Indian players at the top as Gukesh, Arjun, Krishna, Moksh, Raahil, Padmini and Pranav lost their respective games. Eleven players are at a half point behind 2.5/3. GMs D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi are the only two Indians among them. Arjun ended Bharath Subhramaniyam's undefeated streak. IM Moksh Amit Doshi continues his impressive run as he again got himself a decisive advantage, this time against GM Levan Pantsulaia. CCT Finals: Magnus Carlsen wins the first-ever NFT trophy

Magnus Carlsen ended the tournament on a high note as he defeated his arch nemesis of the Tour, Wesley So in the final round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. This ended Carlsen's losing streak. Teimour Radjabov registered his sixth consecutive match victory of the event. He played impressive chess throughout the Finals and secured the second place. Carlsen won the first-ever NFT trophy in a professional chess tournament and US$ 100,000. Radjabov got US$ 60,000. Aronian secured third place after a victory over Mamedyarov in the final round. ChessMood Open R1: Vedant Panesar stuns Tigran Harutyunyan

Vedant Panesar scored the biggest upset of the first round at ChessMood Open. He beat GM Tigran Harutyunyan (ARM) convincingly. CM Robert Piliposyan (ARM) held Georgia no.4 GM Levan Pantsulaia and WIM Priyanka Nutakki held GM Luka Paichadze to a draw. GM Narayanan S L is the top seed of the tournament. He is followed by D Gukesh who is the second seeded player. Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Abhimanyu Puranik among the other top Indian seeds at the tournament. A total of 103 players including 26 GMs, 22 IMs, a WGM and 4 WIMs are taking part from ten countries across the world. Alexey Sarana wins Junior U21 Round Table Open, Arjun Erigaisi finishes second

Top seed GM Alexey Sarana (RUS) scored an unbeaten 7.0/9 to win Junior U21 Round Table Open. Both Sarana and GM Arjun Erigaisi scored the same points, however Sarana clinched the championship due to better tie-breaks and Arjun had to settle for second place. Sarana won €10000, Arjun got €2500. GM Abhimantu Puranik, IM Bharath Subramaniyam H and GM D Gukesh scored 6.5/9, they were placed third to fifth respectively according to the tie-breaks. CCT Finals R8: Aronian beats Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen suffered his second consecutive match loss in the penultimate round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. The loss against Aronian is overall Carlsen's third winless match loss of the event. It is quite obvious that the world champion would prefer to save his energy now, considering his world championship defense is a little over a month away, however he would definitely like to finish the event on a high note. Magnus Carlsen won the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals and the entire Tour despite losing the seventh round match against Radjabov. The FIDE World Cup 2019 winner showed the world his true strength when he faced the world champion as he won the match without losing a single game. Radjabov is now aiming for second place finish as So lost his second consecutive match. Duda ended Artemiev's great momentum. Mamedyarov and Aronian won their respective matches against Giri and So in minimum number of games. Speed King Nakamura won his fifth tie-break and second Armageddon of the event. India wins a historic Silver at World Women’s Team Championship 2021

Indian women won the ever alluring medal at the World Women's Team Championship 2021. While India was not favorite to win the event or know the complete lineup until few days before the event, they braved all odds, made the most out of it and played some inspirational chess. Harika, Vaishali, Tania, Bhakti and Mary everyone contributed to the team whenever required. Coaches Abhijit Kunte and Shyam Sundar provided crucial support and made critical decisions. CFR Team was dominant throughout the tournament as they won all eleven matches in this event.
