MPL Sports Foundation to sponsor Rs.1 crore each year for Indian chess

It's good news for Indian chess that more and more corporates are getting involved in the sport. The latest one being MPL Foundation signing a historic agreement with the All India Chess Federation for Rs. 1 crore per year (with 20% increase each year) for the Indian National Championships for the next five years. This will help the chess players to earn more income and will help in boosting the sport in the country. We bring to you the AICF Press release after this agreement was made.

Sheikh Russel GM R3: Neelash Saha beats Deepan Chakkravarthy

GMs Srinath Narayanan and Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) emerged as the early leaders at the conclusion of the third round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. While the top four out of six games ended in draws, the next nine games had decisive results. IMs Neelash Saha, Koustav Chatterjee and Mitrabha registered impressive victories over GMs Deepan Chakkravarthy, Visakh N R and Enamul Hossain. Bangladesh's legends had a tough day as GMs Niaz Murshed, Ziaur Rahman and WIM Rani Hamid lost to GM Debashis Das, FM Aminul Islam and 10-year-old CM Manon Reja Neer respectively. Abhimanyu Puranik is on the verge of winning 3rd Yerevan Open

GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored a hat-trick by beating the seemingly unstoppable GM Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) in the penultimate round of 3rd Yerevan Open. Both of them were having a huge momentum heading into the clash with championship implications. Abhimanyu has taken a sole lead 7.0/8 for the first time in this event. Narayanan, Sivuk and Arman Mikaelyan (ARM) are the three players at 6.5/8 each. A draw in the final round should secure the championship for Abhimanyu even if all tie-break scores matches with Sivuk, he will be ahead in direct encounter. Sheikh Russel GM R2: Srinath catches Ziaur Rahman off-guard

13 players including six Indians are at 100% score 2.0/2 at Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. They are - GMs Srinath Narayanan, Stany G A and Shyam Sundar M, IMs Aronyak Ghosh, Sayantan Das and Sammed Jaykumar Shete. All six of them will face each other in the third round. Srinath made a short work of Bangladesh's legendary GM Ziaur Rahman in just 20 moves. The host country's first-ever GM Niaz Murshed made a nice save against IM Mitrabha Guha using a nice tactic. 3rd Yerevan Open R7: Sivuk beats Narayanan to take sole lead

Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) brought an end to Narayanan's four-game unbeaten streak as the former defeated him in the seventh round to take sole lead 6.5/7 at 3rd Yerevan Open. Narayanan got himself into a cramped position out of the opening and could not put up a good fight against the Ukrainian. Abhimanyu Puranik completely turned things around against Gukesh to win from an almost lost position. He is now just a half point behind the leader at 6.0/7. GM Karthik Venkataraman scored his fourth consecutive victory to move to 5.5/7. He will face Gukesh in the eighth round. IM Pranav Anand scored an impressive victory over GM Sandipan Chanda. Sheikh Russel GM R1: Arpita Mukherjee stuns Ulvi Sadikhov

The first round of Sheikh Russel International GM Tournament 2021 witnessed plenty of exciting games. WIM Arpita Mukherjee scored the biggest upset victory against GM Ulvi Sadikhov (AZE) who made an incorrect exchange sacrifice and then misplaced his queen. Among other upsets, Sanket Chakravarty held the Polish super strong veteran GM Michal Krasenkow to a solid draw. CM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan (SRI), Bangladesh's Md. Taibur Rahman, CM Zia Tahsin Tajwar, WCM Walijah Ahmed and Md. 3rd Yerevan Open R6: Narayanan and Sivuk share the lead

Top seed GM Narayanan S L scored his fifth consecutive victory as he defeated FM Arash Daghli (IRI) to maintain his lead 5.5/6 at the end of the sixth round of 3rd Yerevan Open. He is joined by GM Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) who also has the same points. They will clash in the seventh round. Three players are at a half point behind at 5.0/6 each. They are - GMs D Gukesh, Abhimanyu Puranik and IM David Shahinyan (ARM). Gukesh and Abhimanyu will face each other in Round 7. IM Bharath Subramaniyam H defeated GM Luka Paichadze (GEO). IMs P Shyam Nikhil, D K Sharma and WIM Isha Sharma held GMs Harsha Bharathakoti, Karen Movsziszian (ARM) and Vahe Baghdasaryan (ARM) to a draw each respectively. Divya Deshmukh becomes the 22nd Woman Grandmaster of India

Divya Deshmukh scored her final WGM-norm in her first tournament in over 17 months at First Saturday GM October 2021. She scored 5.0/9, performed at 2452 to become India's latest Woman Grandmaster. She also scored her second IM-norm in the process. The first two WGM-norms and an IM-norm were scored by February 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic delayed her an opportunity to play over-the-board tournaments. However, that did not deter her from practicing and getting ready for opportunities. Last year, she won Gold for the Indian team at FIDE Online Olympiad 2020. 3rd Yerevan Open R5: Narayanan wins an endgame grind

Top seed GM Narayanan S L scored a 103-move marathon win over GM Giga Quparadze by grinding an endgame which the Georgian could have saved in the fifth round of 3rd Yerevan Open. Narayanan is joined by GMs Klementy Sychev (RUS), Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) and FM Arash Daghli (IRI) in the lead 4.5/5. Ten players including D Gukesh and Abhimanyu Puranik are at a half point behind 4.0/5. IM Raahil Mullick continues his good form. After a draw with Goganov in the second round, this time he drew with GM Sandipan Chanda. He will now face GM Arjun Erigaisi in the sixth round. Round 6 starts today at 3:30 p.m. IST. Praggnanandhaa wins Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour Finals

Praggnanandhaa decimated his competition IM Christopher Yoo in the finals as he needed only three games to win the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour Finals. With this win he won US$ 12500 and a Regular place in the next year's Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. This means we will get to see him face Carlsen more than in one event and go against the world's best. Yoo was not an easy opponent as he is considered to have the strength of the Grandmaster, however Pragg made it look easy. The world champion Carlsen and the legend Anand congratulated the wunderkind on twitter. Pivotal Pawns clinch CoinDCX Chess Super League

Pivotal Pawns made a fantastic comeback after losing the first match in the Finals, they won the second one by the exact same score to force Armageddon in CoinDCX Chess Super League. Zhansaya Abdumalik won the Armageddon for Pivotal Pawns to ensure her team's name is etched in history as the winner of the first edition. Ding Liren, Zhansaya and Savitha Shri scored key victories in the second match to keep the chances alive for their team. Abhijeet Gupta made a brilliant save from a completely lost position after Sethuraman made a rare error. Teimor Radjabov, Anna Muzychuk, Vidit Gujrathi, Harika Dronavalli, Aryan Chopra, Priyanka K, Anish Giri, Karthikeyan Murali and D Gukesh won individual award worth ₹50000 each. Gukesh was playing well in both 3rd Yerevan Open and CoinDCX Chess Super League. However, it takes a toll on the player eventually as both tournaments have completely different format and time control. Armenian GM Arman Mikaelyan got the better of India's youngest GM in the fourth round. Kunal M's fantastic run came to an end as his opponent Klementy Sychev proved too strong for him. GMs Klementy Sychev (RUS), Arman Mikaelyan and FM Arash Daghli (IRI) are in a three-way lead 4.0/4. Arjun Erigaisi was unable to endure a drawn endgame against Arash Tahbaz. Julius Baer CCT Finals: Praggnanandhaa dominates Keymer to reach the Finals

Vincent Keymer might have been the favorite as he won more number of events in the tour, however Praggnanandhaa showed who is the better player as Keymer lost to him 0.5-2.5 in the Semifinals of Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour Finals. Pragg once again did not give any chance to his opponent as he was completely solid in all three games. He was winning the third game too but decided to draw as it was enough to secure his place in the Finals. GM Awonder Liang could not recover from his first round loss as he lost the next two also against IM Christopher Yoo who is known to have a GM strength. CoinDCX Chess Super League KO: Sethuraman powers The Kingslayers to the Final

The Kingslayer has been dominant throughout the event, however they drew with Pivotal Pawns in Qualifier 1. GM Sethuraman S P who is well-known to thrive under high-pressure situations was sent to slay GM Abhijeet Gupta in Armageddon. That is exactly what he did, and The Kingslayers became the first team to advance to the Finals of CoinDCX Chess Super Leauge. Pivotal Pawns had to take the longest route to the Finals as they had to play Qualifier 2 where they beat Brutal Bishops 4-2 convincingly to set up a clash against The Kingslayers in the Finals which starts today from 8:00 p.m. IST. Kunal M is the only untitled player among the five who are at 100% score 3.0/3 at the end of the third round of 3rd Yerevan Open. Kunal beat IM David Shahinyan in a very instructive game. GM D Gukesh is the only other Indian in the lead. GMs Arman Mikaelyan (ARM), Klementy Sychev (RUS) and FM Arash Daghli (IRI) are the remaining three players at the top. IM Bharath Subramaniyam drew with GM Arjun Erigaisi.
