Maxime Lagarde triumphs at 20th Sautron Open 2022, Sidhant second and Bala Chandra third

France no.6 GM Maxime Lagarde scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 20th Sautron International Open 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. IM Sidhant Mohapatra and IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, both scored 7/9. Sidhant remained undefeated, secured second place due to better tie-breaks. Bala Chandra had to settle for the third place. While Sidhant drew with the eventual champion Lagarde in the sixth round, Bala Chandra lost his sole game of the event against him in the fifth. This is Sidhant's first individual podium finish of the year, second overall after a second place finish for Eastern Railway in his All-India Railway Team debut earlier this year. Liem Quang Le wins 55th Biel GMT Rapid 2022

Liem Quang Le scored 11.0/14 to win the 55th Biel International Chess Festival GMT Rapid. He finished a full point ahead of Andrey Esipenko 10/14, whom Liem beat in the final round. Reigning World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov scored 9/14 to secure third place. Both D Gukesh and Salem Saleh made 7/14. They finished at tied fourth place. Today is a rest day for the GMT participants. Classical event Round 1 starts tomorrow 14th July from 2 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. IST). Master Tournament (MTO) starts today at the same time. FTX Road to Miami R9-12: Arjun Erigaisi storms into the Quarterfinals with Sevian

Arjun Erigaisi started the day with a loss against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. It was not easy for the FIDE World Cup 2021 winner. When Arjun miscalculated a tactic in the endgame, only then the world no.15 got a chance to get back in the game. Arjun won the next three games in-a-row against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Hans Niemann and reigning women's world champion, Wenjun Ju. Although the first two wins were a draw, Arjun showed that he is always ready to grab any opportunity that comes his way. Slovakia Open Piestany 2022 R1: Isha Sharma scores a big win

WIM Isha Sharma scored the biggest win of the first round at Slovakia Open Piestany 2022. She defeated IM Martin Neugebauer (SVK) by launching a clinical attack on the kingside. IM Raahil Mullick had GM Michal Krasenkow (POL) on the ropes. Despite having an advantage for the better part part of the game, the Polish legend managed to escape his opponent's grasp and get away with a draw. FM Shantanu Bhambure and WIM Savitha Shri B were the other victors of the round among Indians. The total prize fund of the tournament is €7000. Surya Ganguly wins Chess960 Rapid Open at 55th Biel, Sethuraman second

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly won the Chess960 Rapid Open with an unbeaten 6.5/7 at 55th Biel Chess Festival. He finished a full point ahead of the runner-up, GM Sethuraman S P 5.5/7. WGM Vera Nebolsina (FRA) also scored 5.5/7, however she was adjudged third according to tie-breaks. Gukesh started well in the GMT Accentus Chess960 with a hat-trick of wins, before scoring only a half point in the next four games. FTX Road to Miami R5-8: Arjun Erigaisi ascends to the second place

Arjun Erigaisi bounced back well from a previous round loss. He defeated Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Sam Shankland in consecutive games before a draw against Wei Yi. He finished the second day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Road to Miami with a win over Leinier Dominguez Perez to climb to the second place 17/24. Samuel Sevian increased his win streak to four games to move up to the top of the points table 20/24. Teimour Radjabov had to withdraw from the event after losing his fifth round game against Anish Giri, citing some health issues to the arbiters. Mayank Chakraborty and Bhagyashree Patil win the MPL National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championships

CM Mayank Chakraborty(Assam) and WFM Bhagyashree Patil (Maharashtra) were the winners of the MPL 32nd National U-17 Open and Girls Championships 2022. Talented youngsters CM Mayank Chakraborty and FM Harshad S both finished with 8.5/11, but Mayank took first place due to better tiebreaks. FM Harsh Suresh and Kushal Jani R finished 3rd in the Open section, scoring 8/11. In the girl's section, WFM Bhagyashree Patil won the event scoring 9/11. Rakesh Kumar Jena victorious at Summer Cup Rating Open 2022

Starting out as the top seed, IM Rakesh Kumar Jena scored an unbeaten 6.5/7. Second seeded, Ritviz Parab and 12-year-old Jihaan Tejas Shah also scored the same. However, Rakesh won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Ritviz and Jihaan had to settle for second and third place respectively. The tournament had to be truncated by two rounds due to Section 144 getting imposed on the state on 29th June. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1101000. Top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹71000 and ₹41000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was held between 26th and 29th June 2022 at Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Blazing fast Gelfand wins 35th Leon Masters in Playoffs

The 35th Leon Masters Final went down to the wire. After four Rapid games ended in 2-2, Boris Gelfand won both Blitz Playoff games to win the tournament. Anand started the Final with a win, Gelfand leveled the score in the second game. The third game also went in favor of FIDE World Cup 2009 winner. Anand won the must-win fourth Rapid game to force Playoffs. However, this time, the legend from Israel became victorious unlike their World Championship Match a little over a decade ago in which Anand retained his World title successfully. The Arjun Erigaisi-Levon Aronian saga began last year at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. It continues to add another chapter as Arjun got the better of the only two-time World Cup winner in history in the second round of FTX Road to Miami. This win will definitely be a huge boost for Arjun as the 44th Chess Olympiad is just over a fortnight away where India vs USA clash is likely on the cards. Since both of them are on Board no.3, we might see them face each other on the grandest stage with the highest stakes too. The teenager defeated another World Cup victor, Teimour Radjabov in Round 3. Vitaly Sivuk wins 2nd La Plagne Chess Festival 2022 Masters, Iniyan second and Sayantan third

GM Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) and GM Iniyan P scored unbeaten 7/9 each at 2nd La Plagne International Open 2022 Masters. They were placed first and second according to tie-breaks. Four players scored 6.5/9 each. IM Sayantan Das and IM Nubairshah Shaikh were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. After tying for second place in two consecutive events - 4th Prague Chess Festival and 15th Teplice Open 2022, tie-breaks finally went to Iniyan's favor as he secured the second place. Had Nubair won his final round game against Sivuk, the top three places would have been dominated by India. Nevertheless, second to fourth is good too. Moreover, Nubair had already won the Blitz event.

Arjun Erigaisi will face the World's best at FTX Road to Miami

The fifth leg of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season is FTX Road to Miami. Arjun Erigaisi will be the sole Indian taking part in this event. He will face his nemesis Levon Aronian on the very first day of the Prelims, in Round 2. They will be joined by the three Candidates - Teimour Radjabov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Richard Rapport. Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Jeffery Xiong and Sam Sevian will be making their Tour debuts. Three more Americans will also be seen in action - Leinier Dominguez Perez, Sam Shankland and teenager Hans Niemann. The Ding Liren Interview on Candidates 2022

Ding Liren had a very tough start at the Candidates 2022. He lost his first game and then a series of seven draws ensued. With all the work he had done to qualify for the candidates, things were going wrong for him. But the Chinese no.1 is a fighter! The World no.2 started scoring one win after another, ending with a very impressive 8.0/14 and finishing second at the Candidates. We conducted an interview with him, discussing his performance at this elite event and going through the critical positions in each of his games. 

Aronyak Ghosh triumphs at 2nd Athens of the East GM Open 2022

IM Aronyak Ghosh made a blazing start 6/6. Then he drew the next three games. In the final round, he was up against GM Boris Savchenko. It was a must-win game for him to clinch the championship as a draw meant Hari Madhavan N B winning the event on tie-breaks. Aronyak managed to win the last round game, the tournament 8.5/10 and cross 2500 in the live ratings too. His live rating is now 2502.4. Hari Madhavan N B scored sole 8/10 to secure second place. He also earned his second IM-norm. He is now final IM-norm and 15 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next International Master. GM Tran Tuan Minh (VIE) scored 7.5/10 and was placed third according to tie-breaks.
