Freestyle Grand Slam 2025 Finals: Carlsen makes a comeback against Caruana to advance to the Semifinals

Arjun Erigaisi drew the first game of the Quarterfinals against Vincent Keymer at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour 2025 Finals. However, he lost the second game and the hopes of winning the tournament got dashed. Magnus Carlsen started the day with a loss versus Fabiano Caruana. Then he won the second must-win Rapid game, then won the next two Blitz games to win the match and advance to the Semifinals. The Blitz game by Carlsen was a masterpiece. FIDE World Cup 2025 winner, Javokhir Sindarov won Rapid games against Parham Maghsoodloo and Levon Aronian defeated Hans Niemann 3-1 to move to the Semifinals. R Praggnanandhaa wins FIDE Circuit 2025

GM R Praggnanandhaa has qualified to the FIDE Candidates 2026. Praggnanandhaa topped the FIDE Circuit 2025 by scoring 115.17 points. He made a last-minute entry into the London Chess Classic 2025 Open to ensure he scored enough circuit points, so that his only rival Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) cannot theoretically catch up with him. Despite winning the London Chess Classic 2025 Masters with a fantastic performance, Praggnanandhaa's lead became unassailable, rendering the World Rapid and Blitz 2025 results moot for the FIDE Circuit points. Praggnanandhaa will make his second consecutive appearance at the Candidates. The reigning World Champion, D Gukesh has wanted to face Praggnanandhaa as his next Challenger for the World Championship. It might just happen next year. Photo: FIDE

4th President Cup Masters 2025 R6: Nihal overpushes against Madaminov, pays a heavy price

Nihal Sarin overpushed against Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB) and paid a heavy price at 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. Nihal sacrificed a pawn in the early stage of the game. He had enough compensation for it. In the double rook and minor piece endgame, Nihal tried too hard to score a win, sacrificed another pawn to gain some activity and it cost him the game. Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) defeated Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI). Both Madaminov and Vokhidov are the new coleaders 4.5/6. Nihal is the sole player trailing them by a half point at 4/6. Indian Oil 51st National Women 2025 R7: Nandhidhaa overpowers Shubhi Gupta to become the new sole leader

The reigning and defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) defeated the sole leader WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) to move to the top at Indian Oil 51st National Women's Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi misplaced her queen while maneuvering and it eventually moved far away from the action point. Nandhidhaa is the only player now at 6.5/7. Ananya Raman (TN) drew a rollercoaster battle against WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) which could have gone either player's way. The top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) made a narrow escape against Shivamshika G (TEL) after the latter's knight sacrifice almost worked in her favor. India wins 49 medals at 27th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2025

India has won a total of 49 medals - 13 Gold, 19 Silver and 17 Bronze at 27th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2025. Out of them, 20 are individual medals and the remaining 29 are from Team events. CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma won the sole Gold in Classical event in Under-12 Open. WCM Divi Bijesh, WFM Nivedita V C and FM Prishita Gupta won Gold in Rapid events in Under-10, Under-14 and Under-16 Girls category. Aaranya R is the lone Gold medalist in Blitz Under-8 Girls. She scored a perfect 9/9. Madhvendra, Tamizh Amudhan S, Divi Bijesh, Pratitee Bordoloi and Nivedita V C are double individual medal winners in multiple formats. Freestyle Grand Slam 2025 Finals: Arjun Erigaisi beats Carlsen, will face Keymer in the Quarterfinals

World no.5 and India no.1, Arjun Erigaisi defeated Magnus Carlsen in the fifth round of Round-Robin stage at Freestyle Grand Slam Finals 2025. Arjun capitalized on the World no.1's rare positional mistake. Before that Arjun defeated Vincent Keymer and in the sixth round, he won against Parham Maghsoodloo to complete a hat-trick of wins. FIDE World Cup 2025 topped the Round-Robin stage scoring 5.5/7. He chose Parham for his Quarterfinals opponent. Parham lost all seven of his games on the first day. Levon Aronian scored 5/7 to finish second and opted for Hans Niemann as his KO stage opponent. Arjun and Carlsen scored 4.5/7 each to finish third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Nihal Sarin defeated Shant Sargsyan (ARM) to gain sole lead 4/5 at 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. Nihal played the queen, rook and bishop endgame masterfully to score the win. Frederik Svane (GER) and Maxime Lagarde (FRA) are the other two victors of the round. They won against Alexander Grischuk and Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR) respectively. Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) drew against Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB). They both are trailing Nihal by a half point at 3.5/5 each. WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) defeated her coleader, WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) to score a double hat-trick of wins at Indian Oil 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi sacrificed a couple of pawns early in the game which her opponent accepted. Mary's bishop got trapped, she tried to generate some counterplay but things did not work out for her. The defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) won against WFM Sneha Halder (WB) to move to 5.5/6. WIM Srishti Pandey (MAH) and WIM Kalyani Sirin (KER) played a hard-fought draw which spanned a little over five hours. WFM Nivedita V C (TN) defeated her second WGM in-a-row, Varshini V (TN). Nivedita won in just 22 moves in less than 80 minutes. Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Finals starts today at Grootbos Private Nature in Walker Bay, Hermanus, South Africa. The top eight finishers of the tour will battle each other in Round-Robin Rapid stage. The top three players will get to choose their Quarterfinal opponents. Punjab gets another International Master - Namitbir Singh Walia

Punjab has a new International Master to celebrate. 20-year-old Namitbir Singh Walia secured the IM title at the Annemasse Chess Festival in France. His first IM-norm was scored at the 3rd Rudar GM Round Robin chess tournament in Serbia in 2023. After nearly two years, he earned his second IM-norm at the IM Round-Robin tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina in September 2025. And the final norm came in the following month. Punjab made its first major breakthrough in chess in 2022 when Dushyant Sharma became the state’s first International Master. Nihal Sarin made quick draw in the fourth round of 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. The game lasted less than an hour against the former three-time World Blitz champion, Alexander Grischuk. It was a theoretical draw arising out of Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR) scored the sole victory of the round against Frederik Svane (GER). The previous round leaders - Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB), Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) and Nihal are still at the top of the standings with a score of 3/4 each. WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) and WFM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) have emerged coleaders after Round 5 of Indian Oil 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi made the most out of her color break with the white pieces again. Facing King's Indian Defence for the second consecutive game, Shubhi did not make any significant mistake. Her opponent, WCM Akshaya Sathi (KAR), made an incorrect queen trade offer which cost her the game eventually. Mary Ann used her experience to halt WCM Divi Bijesh's (KER) dream run at the event. The defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) won a 5 hour 15+ minute-long grueling minor piece endgame battle against IM Nisha Mohota (PSPB). Meylis Annaberdiyev wins 9th Mersin Metropolitan Municipality International Open 2025

GM Meylis Annaberdiyev (TKM) and IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) scored 7/9 each at 9th Mersin Metropolitan Municipality International Chess Tournament 2025. Meylis won the tournament on tie-breaks, Arash secured second place. GM Aryan Gholami (IRI) scored sole 6.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund was Turkish Lira 905000. The prize fund in Category A was 617500. The top three prizes were 150000, 110000 and 90000 along with a medal each. IM Bala Chandra Prasad Dhulipalla was the sole Indian taking part in the event.
