56th Biel MTO R8: Aditya Samant on the verge of becoming India's next GM

IM Aditya Samant held the sole leader GM Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) to a draw in the eighth round of 56th Biel Chess Festival MTO 2023. Aditya's ninth round opponent, GM Aryan Chopra needs to turn up, irrespective of the outcome, they must play a game, for Aditya to become India's next Grandmaster. Apart from them, GM Pranav Anand and IM Rathanvel V S are two more Indians also at 6/8, a half point behind the leader Xiangzhi 6.5/8. Rathanvel won a nice game after he accepted his opponent, GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera's (CUB) knight sacrifice and ensured he never gets anything out of it. GM Vincent Keymer (GER) defeated GM Bassem Amin (EGY) to throw the Grandmaster Triathlon (GMT) wide open before the final round. IM Kushagra Mohan and Shriraj Bhosale: The Winners of the 4th edition of Pursue Your Chess Scolarship

In 2018, a person hailing from Bangalore who wanted to remain anonymous initiated Pursue Your Chess Scholarship under the banner of Help Chess Foundation with Rs. 50000. It has been 5 years now, and this is the 4th edition of the initiative. The donor is now a well-known personality in chess, Ashwin Subramanian, a man with many talents. Ashwin has been an integral part of the chess community for some time now and finds ways to give back to the community in any way possible. With his support, we have been able to help many chess players all over the world. Every year, he has been raising the fund by Rs. 25,000; this year, the total amount was Rs. 1,25,000. The scholarship was divided between IM Kushagra Mohan, who won Rs. 1 lakh, and Shriraj Bhosale, who received Rs. 25,000.

Meet Tejas Tiwari, the youngest FIDE-rated player!

Tejas Tiwari is a 5-year-old boy living in Haldwani, Uttarakhand - also known as Devbhoomi. Tejas has just become the youngest FIDE rated player in the world! He currently has a FIDE Rating of 1149. Sharing this information on their social media channels yesterday, the International Chess Federation confirmed that currently Tejas is the youngest player in the world to achieve a FIDE Rating. Born on 25th December 2017, Tejas received his FIDE Rating on 1st June 2023, and was then aged 5 years 5 months and 7 days! This little boy was one of the players who participated in ChessBase India's first chess camp at Bhopal. Even in this tender age, he practices chess for 3-4 hours every day! Kartavya Anadkat dominates 5th Ayodhana Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 9/9

Kartavya Anadkat scored a perfect 9/9 to win 5th Ayodhana Rating Open 2023. He finished a massive 1.5 points ahead of the field. Five players - Indrajeet Mahindrakar, Naitik R Mehta, Rupam Mukherjee, Tanmay Rajbongshi and Mohit Kumar Soni scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹350000. The top three prizes were ₹55000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. This is Kartavya's seventh tournament triumph of the year. After winning this event, he won a one-day rapid open tournament. As of this writing, he is fighting for the championship at SLAN 1st Rating Open 2023. Yevgeniy Roshka wins 42nd St. Veiter Jacques-Lemans Open 2023, Sharan Rao second

IM Yevgeniy Roshka (UKR) and FM Sharan Rao scored 7.5/9 each at 42nd St. Veiter Jacques-Lemans Open A 2023. Roshka won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sharan secured second place. The fifth round battle between them ended in a draw. Both players remained undefeated. FM Kurt Fahrner (AUT) scored sole 7/9 to finish third. The top three prizes were €1000, €800 and €600 each along with a Jacques-Lemans watch respectively. Sharan crossed 2400 in the live ratings when he beat Sebastian Hoffman (GER) in the final round to become India's latest International Master. The Mangalore man did not slow down. Immediately on the following day, he played Zadar Open 2023 in Croatia. He scored an unbeaten 5.5/9, finished in ninth place and added another 37.4 Elo rating points. Currently, he is playing at 4th Paul Keres Memorial 2023 where he won the first game.

56th Biel MTO R7: Aditya Samant destroys Daniil Yuffa

GM Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) defeated GM Ngoc Truong Son Nguyen (VIE) to maintain his sole lead 6/7 at 56th Biel Chess Festival 2023 MTO. IM Aditya S Samant got the better of GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP) to be one of the two pursuers at 5.5/7. The other one is GM Yan Liu (CHN) who defeated IM Vantika Agrawal. Yuffa sacrificed an exchange against Aditya and could not gain any compensation for it. GM Pranav Anand once again had a great opportunity to win with the white pieces. This time GM Aryan Chopra was his opponent. However, he missed it and the game ended in a draw. GM Arjun Erigaisi drew against GM Jules Moussard (FRA) in the fifth round of the GMT. Aditya Mittal victorious at Astana Zhuldyzdary Open 2023

GM Aditya Mittal scored an unbeaten 8/10 to win Astana Zhuldyzdary International Chess Festival Open A 2023. The 16-year-old finished a half point ahead of a strong field which featured 20 more GMs from all over the world. He performed at 2668 and gained 12.2 Elo rating points at this event. Three players - GM Alexander Moiseenko (UKR), GM Evgeny Alekseev (ISR) and IM Ramazan Zhalmakhanov (KAZ) scored 7.5/10 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the festival was 40000000 Tenge. The top three prizes were 4000000, 3500000 and 3000000 each respectively. Aditya won approx. ₹734000. He already started playing his next event - Uralsk Open 2023 where he made an unbeaten start 4/5.

Wenjun Ju becomes Women's World Champion for the fourth time

The defending champion Wenjun Ju continues her reign as the Women's World Champion. She defeated Tingjie Lei 6.5-5.5 in a twelve game match to retain her crown. Tingjie struck first in the fifth game. In Game 7, Wenjun had some great chances. However, she could not capitalize on them. In retrospect, missing that win, did not prove to be costly to her as she delivered the equalizer in the following game. Heading into the twelfth game, it was evident from the play that both players wanted to finish things in the Classical format. One of their wish turned out to be true as Wenjun won Game 12 to become the Women's World Champion for the fourth time. She revealed that Wei Yi and Pentala Harikrishna were her coaches. GM Aryan Chopra drew against GM Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) in the sixth round of 56th Biel Chess Festival MTO 2023. Xiangzhi maintained his sole lead 4.5/6. GM Pranav Anand missed an opportunity to win against FM Marius Deuer (GER). It was a complex middlegame and the former could not navigate his way to keep his material advantage. IM Vantika Agrawal drew her game against IM Aditya S Samant. Untitled Jinan Jomon drew against his second GM of the event, Luis Ernesto Quesada Perez (CUB). With the support of many people, this community has only grown over time. The idea behind this initiative was to provide talented players with help that would help them grow in their chess journey. This not only helps the chess players in their journey but also gives a chance to chess enthusiasts who want to contribute to the community in some way. One such player that has been on the receiving end of the S. Krishnan Scholarship is Arshiya Das, a young talent from Tripura. Leelajai Krishna N outstanding at 16th Paracin Open B 2023, Pranesh clinches Blitz, Ethan Vaz second

Indian players have always garnered a lot of success at Paracin International Chess Festival tournaments. The 16th edition was no different either. CM Aaditya Dhingra scored his second IM-norm in Open A (>2100) section with a performance of 2420. He increased his Elo rating by 131.2 points. 16-year-old Leelajai Krishna N won the Open B (≤2100 section) scoring an unbeaten 8.5/9. The teenager finished a full point ahead of the competition and gained 122.8 Elo rating points. GM Pranesh M won the Blitz Open scoring 9/11 and remained undefeated. FM Ethan Vaz also scored the same. He was adjudged second and gained 206 Elo rating points. The top three prizes in Open A were RSD 200000, 150000 and 110000, for Open B they were 55000, 42000 and 30000. Blitz had a total prize fund of RSD 60000. Arjun Erigaisi superb at 56th Biel GMT Blitz 2023 with a 2864 performance, now World no.17

Arjun Erigaisi ended his tough form by winning the Blitz event of 56th Biel Chess Festival GMT 2023. He scored 10.5/14, performed at 2864, gained 27.2 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2737.2, now he is world no.17 in Blitz. However, David Navara (CZE) and Vincent Keymer (GER) are currently leading the GMT standings with a score of 26/44 each. Arjun will face Jules Moussard (FRA), Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) and Vincent Keymer (GER) in the last three rounds. Today is a rest day. GMT Round 5 starts tomorrow Monday 24th July. Priyanshu Patil wins Late Ramesh Vinayakrao Kotwal Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023

Priyanshu Patil and Anshul Nanwani scored 8/9 each at Late Ramesh Vinayakrao Kotwal Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023. Priyanshu won the tournament on tie-breaks. Anshul was adjudged second. The champion suffered his sole loss against the eventual second runner-up, Indrajeet Mahindrakar. The top seed of the event, Indrajeet edged past Nihaan Pohane to finish third with a 7.5/9 score. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. The top three prizes were ₹21000, ₹11000 and ₹5000 each respectively. This is Priyanshu's first rating tournament triumph of his career. India bags seven Gold medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2023

India has won a total of 13 medals including 7 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2023. India has also won Best Federation trophy as India won three Gold medals and a Silver in the Classical section. Hriday Garg is the only Indian who has won a Gold medal in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz in Under-7 Open category. He won Gold in Blitz with a perfect score of 7/7. Vignesh Advaith Vemula won two Gold medals in Rapid and Blitz, Vyom Malhotra clinched a Gold in Classical and two Silver in Rapid and Blitz, Pragnya H G won Gold in Classical, Kashthuri Bhai R Bronze in Rapid and Silver in Blitz, Amulya Guruprasad Silver in Classical, and Yashvi Jain Bronze in Blitz. A total of seven Indian players have won at least one medal in this event. GM Xiangzhi Bu defeated his fellow compatriot GM Yan Liu to emerge sole leader 4.5/5 at 56th Biel Chess Festival 2023 MTO. IM Aditya S Samant played solid chess to hold GM Pranav Anand to a draw after 99 moves. IM Harikrishnan A Ra made a quick draw against GM Ngoc Truong Son Nguyen (VIE). GM Aryan Chopra bounced back by scoring a victory over IM Lukasz Licznerski (POL). IM Vantika Agrawal defeated Xiongjian Peng (CHN) to register her third win in-a-row and move to 4/5. In the GMT, Arjun Erigaisi suffered his second consecutive loss in the Classical event. This time against the defending champion, Liem Quang Le (VIE).
