Back in the World's Top 10

Arjun Erigaisi had a tough time in the last classical tournament at Tata Steel Masters 2026, where he lost 30 rating points and won just 1 game in 13 rounds. But now he is back in form again and started the event with 2 draws against Magnus Carlsen and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, and won his 3rd game against Nils Grandelius to get back into the World top 10.

Arjun Erigaisi vs Nils Grandelius (1-0)

The game started with an Open Sicilian, and Grandelius surprised Arjun by choosing the Dragon Variation. Arjun responded with the aggressive Yugoslav Attack, aiming for opposite-side castling and a direct assault on the black king. He followed the same line Vaishali used in the FIDE Candidates, seeking an early advantage.

It was a complex battle in the endgame where Nils was low on time and could not find the correct defensive ideas to hold the position, and Arjun scored a nice win.

Zhu Jiner vs Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (0-1)

Zhu Jiner decided to play a quite passive line with the white pieces, but then she went for an all-out attack that backfired badly as her king remained in the center for so long, and Yagiz managed to find nice counterplay to win the game.
