Chennai 04-07: The Madras Effect

The Indian chess capital hosts its eighth International Grandmaster tournament. This tourney began a day after the one in Delhi finished – on 18 January – and for players searching for their GM and IM norms, this was a wonderful opportunity to play two back-to-back tournaments of a very high caliber. For the foreign grandmasters, it was a chance to play in an interesting country during the winter. It is a single Open tournament with a total prize fund of Rs. 11, 00,000, which is close to 15,000 Euros. Surya and Padmini shine at the Keres Memorial

The Keres Memorial- ACP Open 2016 was held from the 7th-10th of January 2016. Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Padmini Rout were the only two Indian representatives at the event. They played some fantastic chess and came back with great laurels. While Ganguly finished joint second, Padmini accounted for the biggest scalp of her chess career! Tania at IIT-M Saarang 2016

She is bold, she is beautiful and on the chessboard, even lethal. IM Tania Sachdev was invited to the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras for their annual college festival Saarang 2016. Tania delivered a lecture and did an insightful Q&A with the students that as she confesses, she enjoyed no end. The oldest chess association in India, Coimbatore District Chess Association celebrated its Platinum Jubilee just a few days ago. Apart from creating huge stars in the country, CDCA was also responsible for Vishy Anand becoming a GM - the five time World Champion made his final GM norm in the Sakthi Finance GM tournament in Coimbatore! This article pays homage to the wonderful talents produced and the incomparable work done by this Association.

Delhi 10: Neverov shocks the winner!

Ivan Popov of Russia won the 14th edition of Delhi Open. However, he did not hold the final game against veteran Ukrainian GM Valeriy Neverov, who played some fine chess to dismantle the Russian. A bunch of Indians managed to finish well and the biggest round of applause went to West Bengal's IM Sayantan Das who registered a GM-norm! Revisiting the 2015 National Premier Championship (2)

The 53rd edition of India’s National Premier Championship was held from 15 November 2015 to 28 November 2015 at Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. The 13 round all-play-all with a rating average of 2501 was the strongest Indian tournament of the year, and the tournament was won by sixteen-year-old grandmaster Murali Karthikeyan. Adhiban off to a flier!

The Tata Steel tournament kicked off on the 16th of January. This year we have only one Indian in the fray, B.Adhiban, who is playing in the Challengers section. The 23-year-old, who is the second seed in the event, got off to a great start, winning his first round game against Nijat Abasov from Azerbaijan. A cute little tactic sealed the deal. While GM Popov settled for a fairly easy draw in the penultimate round of the 2016 Delhi Open, the Indians on the top boards had a mixed day. The brightest spot of the day was IM Sayantan Das's win over Italian GM David Alberto, thus inching closer to a GM norm. ChessBase India brings you an illustrated report.

Russian GM Ivan Popov (2650) is playing with a fabianosque touch as he registered his seventh straight victory at the 14th Delhi Open 2016. Indians had a truly solid day at the office as almost all of them at the top held their higher rated opponents to draws. We bring you an illustrated report.

Delhi 05+06: Resurgence!

Russian GM Ivan Popov (2650) had no qualms brushing aside two grandmasters in rounds five and six to move to a very comfortable lead with 6.0/6. However, the spotlight was on Indian youngsters taking on their higher-rated opponents and a handful of them registered victories! In the Category-B tournament that ended yesterday, Rishabh Nishad of Uttar Pradesh took home the Rs. 1.5 lakhs first prize and a ChessBase 13 software. A pictorial report with games analysis.
