Fabi vs Hari: A draw in the sharp Sicilian

Harikrishna came excellently prepared in the first round of the Shamkir Chess 2016. He faced the top seed Fabiano Caruana with the black pieces and didn't back down from a fight. The sharp Sicilian Taimanov with opposite sides castling and pawn storms made it a highly interesting battle. It seemed as if the US Champion was a tad quicker in opening the lines. Tournament Diary: Srinath at Nashik

IM Srinath Narayanan is one of those few players in India who consistently finishes in the upper echelons of the prize list in the various Indian tournaments. A few days back, he participated in the Resha International Open 2016 held at Nashik in Maharastra. He agreed to maintain a diary of sorts during the event and here are his entries, where he describes his day to day struggles as a professional chessplayer playing a tournament.

When Anatoly Karpov was 11 years old, he was invited to Botvinnik’s chess school. But the “Patriarch” passed a harsh verdict: “The boy has no clue about chess and therefore absolutely no future as a chess player.” Rarely was a judgement about a chess talent more wrong — Karpov went on to become the 12th World Chess Champion. And more than that he proved his dominance by winning an array of tournaments — more than 170 of them, actually — for around four decades. Today, he celebrates his 65th birthday.

MCL 2016: Where chess meets fun!

The Maharashtra Chess League, India's only chess league, is into its fourth year and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. The most unique feature of the MCL is the auction! New York, circa 1995: Anand took on Kasparov in one of the most hyped World Championships ever in chess history. Most people around the world wanted, with all their hearts, to see Anand become the World Champion, but in their heads, they knew that Kasparov would retain the title. The Saravana Krishnan fireworks at Sivakasi!

At the Hatsun Idhayam 2nd SCS Fide rating tournament held in Sivakasi, Saravana Krishnan was not the favourite to win the title. He started as the fifth seed with one GM and three IMs ahead of him. But such statistics didn't matter for the boy from Tamil Nadu, who played some scintillating chess to win the tournament with a score of 8.0/9. Ram S. Krishnan scored the same points but had to settle for the second spot. Cheating incident mars Delhi under 1600

After winning a roller coaster game in the final round at a below 1600 tournament, Nitin Pai went to the arbiter M.S. Gopakumar to share his excitement, but the chief arbiter had something even more interesting to tell. He had busted a cheat on the top board! An otherwise well organised event was marred by a cheating incident caught red handed by the vigilant arbiters of the Delhi Chess Association.

Sangli: Sameer Kathmale steamrolls the field

The Southern Maharashtrian city of Sangli has been a major hub of Indian chess for well over four decades. Continuing the long tradition, the 49th edition of the Late Babukaka Shirgaonkar Memorial, Sangli’s marquee event, was held from 6th to 11th May. A total of 180 players participated, with the local boy IM Sameer Kathmale ‘doing a Caruana’ and winning the event in a dominant fashion! Pictorial report with Kathmale’s analysis.

Bharat Singh Chauhan is a noted International Organiser and the President of Delhi Chess Association. He is also the CEO of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), Deputy President of the Asian Chess Federation, Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and the Chairman of the FIDE Technical Commission. To the chessplayers in India, he is better known as the organiser of the best tournament in India in terms of quality and the prize fund.
