The temperature in Sochi, Russia is around zero degrees Celsius. A pack of 18 Indians are braving the weather and fighting it out at the World Schools 2016, trying to bring home a medal. Currently it is A. Harshini in the under-15 girls section who is performing the best with 3.5/4. On 4th of December Timur Gareyev played against 48 opponents in a blindfold simul that lasted nearly 20 hours to set the world record in simultaneous blindfold chess. Miguel Najdorf's record of 45 opponents was broken by Mark Lang after 64 years in 2011 by playing 46 people. Timur went two steps ahead and challenged 48! He ended the simul with a staggering 35 wins. It was truly an exhibition of unbelievable human strength and stamina. Albert Silver tells you the tale of how it all transpired.
The popular Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, also known to her followers as Amma, passed away in Chennai. She was one of the most powerful leaders from India and was instrumental in bringing the World Championship to this country, a match that saw Anand step down to allow Magnus to begin a new era. She passed away at the age of 68 at Apollo Hospital in Chennai after struggling with health related issues for three months. She was a believer in the power of chess and introduced the game as a compulsory activity in all schools in Tamil Nadu, making her state an intellectual powerhouse.
The 1st Shaastra Rapid Fide rating tournament will be held in Chennai from 17th to 18th of December 2016. The National Schools Championship for the Visually Challenged was held from 22 November to 26 November at Shirdi in Maharashtra. 67 players born after 2000 participated, including many girls, and four were rated among them. The tournament was won by Tamil Nadu's talented K. Marimuthu in a crushing manner while Mumbai lad Aryan Joshi was second. Report.
The 2016 National Premier Championship was a heavyweight affair with Adhiban and Vidit among the participants. The tournament saw an early leader in Aravindh Chithambaram as he rolled through the opposition, but Karthikeyan Murali caught up with his city-mate. In the final round, Aravindh lost to R.R. In a tale of grit and merit, Chinese GM Ju Wenjun came from behind to win the Women's Grand Prix at Khanty-Mansiysk. She won with a clear one point lead scoring 7.5/11!
