Grand Chess Tour Leuven - Wesley So leads, Anand beats Nepo

The Grand Chess Tour 2017 has begun. The first leg held a few days ago was won by Magnus Carlsen. In the second leg, we move to Leuven in Belgium and Vishy Anand is back in action. The event is going to witness nine rounds of rapid play (25 + 10) and eighteen rounds of blitz. On the first day three rounds of rapid chess were played and Wesley So emerged as the sole leader by beating Magnus Carlsen. Anand scored 50% - he drew with Anish Giri, lost to Vladimir Kramnik and won against Ian Nepomniachtchi. A summary of entire day's play, beautiful pictures and brief annotations.

National Challengers 2017 is now open to all

This year the National Challengers 2017 was going to be a very strong event as the AICF along with the organizers had decided to restrict the entries to only four selected players from every state and players rated above 2200 Elo in open and above 1800 Elo in the women's section. However, in the central council meeting of AICF it was decided that these restrictions will be relaxed and all the players can participate provided the name is recommended by their state associations. So the event is open to all and you can now book your accommodation and travel through the ChessBase India travel solution.

Study the studies day 5: A knight's ultimate test!

Three rating tournaments in a span of 20 days!

Sivakasi—the crackers city of India witnessed a chess festival of sorts when the 3rd Hatsun Idhayam FIDE open, Sivakasi Chess Sparkles and TN State U-25, all three FIDE rated tournaments were held in a span of 20 days! FIDE World Teams 2017: China wins Open; Russia wins Women; India impresses!

We gave it our all, we gave it our best. Yet we did not win a medal at the World Team Championship 2017. Well, that's how sports is! We finished fourth in both open and women's section. In the last round the men's team beat Norway 3-1 and our girls were able to get the better of Azerbaijan with the same margin. In this report we bring you two very interesting games with detailed analysis. Vidit's draw against Aryan Tari annotated by Sagar Shah, and Adhiban's win over Johan Salomon by indefatigable Aradhya Garg.

World Teams Express: India fourth in both sections

Team India had a great final day at the World Team Championship 2017. The men's team beat Norway 3-1, the women's team beat Azerbaijan with the same score. However, this performance was only good for fourth place in both the sections. While in the men's we missed out by one "match point", in the women's section it was just "1.5 game points". China won the gold in Open and Russia are the women's champion. For now we have the express report with Surya Shekhar Ganguly's take on Indian performance. Full report to follow soon.

FIDE World Teams 2017 Round 8: Eesha's supercharged king beats Vietnam!

Eesha Karavade was facing the woman in form, the reigning Asian Champion Vo Thi Kim Phung. The girl from Pune used her king masterfully to carve out a 2.5-1.5 win over Vietnam. This means that the Indian women team still has a chance for a podium finish provided some of the results work out in their favour. Indian men put up a great fight against the Russian team, but lost the match 2.5-1.5. This ends our medal hopes. AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan's 15 point plan for Indian chess

On 25th of June Bharat Singh Chauhan assumed the office of the Secretary of All India Chess Federation (AICF). Few hours into his job, the man has come up with a 15 point plan to help improve the chess scene in India. Some of the new ideas include AICF App, improving the Chess In Schools program, forming the Indian Chess League, arbiters seminars, coaching camps in states, better AICF website and social media presence and much more. We wish him all the best for his role as the AICF Secretary and also a very happy 59th birthday!

ICF wins 30th All India Railway Team Championships 2017

One of the most prestigious chess events on Indian soil - the Inter Railway meet was held in Vadodara, Gujarat from the 17th to the 22nd of June. Some of the strongest grandmasters and International Masters employed with Indian Railways participated in the event. The winner was the team from Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Silver went to South Western Railways and bronze to Western Railways. The indvidual event was won by GM Swapnil Dhopade who has sent us his nice win against IM Arghyadip Das.

FIDE World Teams Round 7: Adhiban! Adhiban!

The thing about champions is that they never ever fail to make a comeback. After a tough loss against Yilmaz, Adhiban found himself facing a stronger opponent in the seventh round in the form of Anton Korobov. He played a fine game to beat his Ukrainian opponent and give India the much needed 2.5-1.5 victory. In the women's section we were trailing 2-1 in the match against China, but Padmini showed her class, and beat Guo Qi in an equal endgame to level the scores. Analysis of both these games, and a small flashback to Baku 2016.

At halfway India is placed fourth in IBCA Olympiad 2017

The Indian team at the IBCA Olympiad for the blind and visually impaired began as the 19th seed. But the team has performed admirably and is currently in the fourth position after five rounds. Soundarya Kumar Pradhan and Kishan Gangolli have been the backbone of the team scoring crucial wins to help India win against Montenegro and Azerbaijan in rounds four and five. World Teams R06: Deadlock with Turkey

It was a thrilling round against Turkey. The Indian team was so close to winning. However, in the end it was just a draw with one win exchanged and two draws. Sasikiran was our man of the match as he defeated Emre Can. Adhiban lost to Yilmaz. Negi was close to winning, but blundered and very nearly lost. In the end he and Vidit drew. In the women's section Indians were beaten comprehensively by the Russians with a score of 3-1. In this report we have game analysis of all the eight encounters and an important lesson on the rule of Photographic draw.

An intimate portrait of an incredible chess prodigy!

How does a child prodigy develop? And not just a normal one! He is the youngest IM in the world and perhaps the most talented chess player on the planet as on today. In order to know how Praggnanandhaa developed and works on chess, IM Sagar Shah went to his house in Chennai and spent a few hours with the boy and his parents. He shares his findings in this article. To sum it up in one line - Praggnanandhaa's chess imagination knows no bounds but his feet are firmly placed on the ground!
