Ju Wenjun is the new Women's World Champion

Reigning World Women Rapid Champion GM Ju Wenjun defeated GM Tan Zhongyi with a score of 5.5-4.5 to win the 10-match World Championship. The FIDE Women's World Championship Match 2018 took place in two stages. The first half consisting of first five games from 3rd to 9th May, took place in Shanghai, China and the later half, the last five games were held in Chongqing, China from 12th to 18th May. Ju took an early lead by scoring 3.5/5, which means she just needed 2 points in the last four games which she had no trouble getting as she made four consecutive draws and became third consecutive Chinese player to become the World Champion after Hou Yifan and Tan Zhongyi. Kolkata 2018 Round 6: Momentary lapse in concentration costs Rozum the full point!

Everyone thought he was cruising towards victory. Everyone was sure he would win the game. And then Ivan Rozum moved his king inadvertently to g7 instead of g8 and in a flash he moved from a winning to a completely lost position. That's how cruel the game of chess is! Check out this game in which Ivan plays beautiful chess to outplay GM Adam Tukhaev, only to fall at the final hurdle. Tukhaev is now the sole leader with 5.5/6. He is followed by eight GMs on 5.0/6, which includes two Kolkata lads Sandipan Chanda and Deep Sengupta. Round 6 report from Kolkata. 

The launch of Academy Chess League

ChessBase India launches its all new initiative - Academy Chess League. An online playing league where academies/schools from different parts of India and the world fight it out against each other in a serious long game of chess (45 min+10 sec). The main aim of the league is to provide a platform for players to fight for the honour of their academy/school and at the same time improve as chess players! Kolkata 2018 Round 5: Ivan Rozum shows you what the art of being means!

The sole leader at the 3rd LIC Kolkata GM International 2018 is GM Ivan Rozum from Russia. Ivan has been showing phenomenal technique at this event beating all of his opponents in endgames. Against Deep Sengupta in the fifth round he gave a model presentation of how sometimes "being" in chess is more important than "doing". Ivan played perhaps one of the finest positional games of the tournament to outwit Deep Sengupta. Rozum is pursued by three players Amonatov, Srinath and Tukhaev on 4.5/5, with a huge number of players on 4.0/5. Kolkata 2018 Round 4: Gukesh beats Aravindh Chithambaram

After four rounds of the Kolkata GM International 2018 we have two leaders on 100% score - GM Deep Sengupta and GM Ivan Rozum. The two will face off in the fifth round on the top board. The biggest news of round five was 12-year-old IM D. Gukesh winning his game against 2597 rated Aravindh Chithambaram. In a drawn position Aravindh, thoroughly dejected, resigned the game. Top seed Nigel Short, along with seven others are leading with a perfect score at the end of round 3 of LIC 3rd Kolkata International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2018. Short extracted water out of stone when his opponent Shyam tried too hard in a seemingly equal position in the endgame. Aravindh had an unusual day as he missed a clear win in time pressure against strong IM Rathnakaran Kantholi which was evident by his repeated nodding. Kolkata 2018 Round 2: WIM Vantika Agrawal shows how to beat a 2600+ GM!

WIM Vantika Agrawal pulled the biggest upset of the tournament when she defeated two-time National Premier champion, GM Karthikeyan Murali in the 2nd round of LIC 3rd Kolkata International Open 2018. Rithvik Raja was a complete piece up against Abhijeet Gupta, but Mr. Commonwealth survived. Experienced IM D.V. Prasad has come to this tournament with great energy as he beat the in-form GM Deepan Chakkravarthy in Spanish game. Raunak Sadhwani conquers his "Fier"!

Fearing higher rated opponents is a common problem that is seen in chess players, more so in youngsters. One of India's biggest talents 12-year-old Raunak Sadhwani had similar problems. However, a training camp with Amonatov seems to have made a difference. The Tajik GM constantly told Raunak two golden words "No Fear!" This mantra turned into some sort of a funny joke when Raunak started to respond to No fear with the words No Alexander, after the famous Brazilian GM Alexander Fier. Two days after the training camp Raunak flew to Llucmajor, Spain to play in a strong open tournament. And guess who he was up against in the 2nd round? Alexander Fier! What happened in the game? Udaan: Spreading chess to the underprevileged

In December last year, ChessBase India had collaborated with the Udaan Welfare Foundation, an NGO based in Mumbai with the aim of introducing chess to underprivileged children through a two-day-long chess coaching camp. In these two days, the children learned not only the basics of the game but also how chess be useful in enhancing memory, decision making and rational thinking. In this report, Aditya Pai shares his impressions from the camp. He also tells us how a top International Master from Mumbai inspired the young kids to think bigger.

Today is mother's day. So many fine chess players have been created in our country because of the dedication and efforts of ChessMoms. In late 2016 we published an article where we told people about the various top players and how their mothers have made a special impact on their chess careers. We asked the chess community to come forward and post their pictures with their mother on social media with "#chessmom". A lot of people did that and in this article we publish all those who paid a tribute to the contribution of their mother in their chess career.

FIDE Presidential candidate GM Nigel Short headlines LIC 3rd Kolkata Open 2018

LIC presents 3rd Kolkata International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2018, jointly organized by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy and AllSport Foundation will start from this monday 14th May, 2018 at The New Town School which is also the venue partner of the event. The tournament will be headlined by recently announced candidate for FIDE Presidency, GM Nigel Short. He has been known to shoot straight from the hip in the matters related to chess. 193 players across 12 different countries including 28 GMs, 31 IMs, 2 WGMs and many more FMs, CMs and WIMs will play in a 9-day tournament which is arguably the strongest Open GM tournament in the history of Kolkata and perhaps one of the strongest in the country ever. The man who never gave up - Shailesh Nerlikar (21.05.1977 - 10.03.2018)

Shailesh Nerlikar was one of the most special players who graced the game of chess in India. He was 100% disabled suffering from an illness named Quadriplegia and multiple contracture. He could not sit or stand. Lying on the bed he learnt the game of chess! His bones were brittle and his health was always an issue, but he didn't let them come in way of his dream of becoming a GM. Shailesh fought hard, but on 10th of March 2018 he passed away. IM Sagar Shah who spent a good deal of time with this legend, shares his experiences with you. At the same time you are invited to take part in the Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial tournament to be held in Pune on the 20th of May 2018. 

12-year-old Raunak Sadhwani is just 22 Elo points away from becoming an IM

Chess prodigies are sprouting from all parts of our country. We have Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh from Tamil Nadu, Nihal Sarin from Kerala, Prithu Gupta from Delhi. One more such phenomenal talent who is going to make India proud in the years to come is Raunak Sadhwani from Maharashtra. The boy hails from the fertile chess city of Maharashtra called Nagpur. Born on 22nd December 2005, Raunak is just 12 years and six months old, but he is already on the brink of becoming an IM. He has achieved all his three IM norms and achieved a rating of 2378. In this article he shares with us two of his annotated games from the Sharjah Masters 2018 where he made his final IM norm.
