Shashini Puvi - the best under-5 girl in India

She was born on 24th of April 2013. Barely five years old Shashini Puvi has already achieved two national titles! She has been the under-5 national schools champion at Bhubaneshwar in February 2018 and the national under-5 champion at Tumkur in July 2018. At an age where people learn the game of chess, this youngster has already taken massive steps in the direction of becoming a strong player. Shashini's favourite player is Vishy Anand and her dream is to meet the five-time World Champion some day! Well, we presume that this is going to happen very soon. Judging from the speed at which she is winning her national titles, we won't be surprised if she becomes one of the strongest junior players of Indian chess in a few years from now!

Sant Marti Open 2018: Mitrabha Guha earns his maiden GM norm!

In the third leg of the Catalan circuit, the 20th Sant Marti International Chess Open, the top seed of the tournament, Gadir Guseinov from Azerbaijan clinched the title with a score of 7.5/9. This was his second straight title in the Catalan circuit after the Barbera Open and nobody seems to be in a place to challenge his dominance in the circuit as of now. 19-year-old Peruvian GM Alcantara Martinez took second place with a score of 7.0/9. IM Luiz Lazaro from Cuba had scored the same as Martinez but was placed third due to an inferior tiebreak. In the fourth place was India's Mitrabha Guha who scored 6.5 points and also made his maiden Grandmaster norm. Among other Indians in the fray, Nilesh Saha scored an International Master norm and, with a score of 6.0/9, was placed 11th in the final standings. With another strong performance, the Indian contingent kept up their stronghold in Spain.

Sagar and Amruta are in Hamburg at the ChessBase Office and on 31st of August at 2.30 p.m. IST (11.00 a.m. CET) they will be discussing some of the most recent endgames along with a couple of endgames from Sagar's own games. IX World Children's Games: Cancer survivor kids from India shine

IX World Children's Games took place in Moscow, Russia from 3rd to 5th August. What makes the event so special? Well, it is the participants! All the participants have won their life battles against cancer; all of them are cancer survivors. This year, in addition to 32 teams from Russian regions, 14 foreign delegations came to the Russian capital, including the first time entrants from Kyrgyzstan. Amid all of these brave hearts, Team India proved their mettle yet again, winning several medals in various categories. SNA Kedar P. Palsule has sent us a pictorial report on this exciting event.

14-year-old Nihal Sarin raises Rs.1,74,463 through ChessBase India show for Kerala

Age doesn't matter, it is the willingness that counts. 14-year-old GM Nihal Sarin, the third grandmaster from the state of Kerala raised funds for the victims of the devastating flood that took place in the state a few days ago through a show with IM Sagar Shah that was held on the ChessBase India Youtube Channel. Vishy Anand was the first person to contribute towards the show, and India number one Koneru Humpy came forward with a mammoth contribution of Rs.25,000. The total amount collected and donated to Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund was Rs. 1,74,463. We thank the entire chess community for their generosity. In this article we tell you about the donors, but also about the one hour 40 minute show that left us all proud of Nihal's kindness as well as chess acumen. 

Chess Festival at Hyderabad

A one day chess festival was organised in Hyderabad by Simply Chess Foundation where Arjuna Awardee IM D.V. Prasad gave simultaneous and blindfold exhibition matches. The event took place on 4th August 2018 at Hotel Amanthran, Hyderabad, and was completely free of cost for all players. Below is a report on all the happenings of the day, sent to us by Ravi Kandi.

Caruana beats So in GCT Playoffs

Since both Caruana and So ended the GCT regular season in a dead-heat tie with 26 points each and shared fourth place, a playoff was called to decide the final spot to London. Holding So in the first game with black pieces and winning against him with White, Caruana sealed his place in the London Chess Classic 2018. IM V. Sinquefield Cup: Caruana, Aronian & Carlsen share first

The last round of the Sinquefield Cup was one of the tensest in recent memory. Aronian, Caruana, Mamedyarov, Wesley So, Grischuk, Vachier-Lagrave, Karjakin were all fighting to make the top 4 to get into the Grand Chess Tour final. Carlsen was fighting for the title. Nakamura wasn’t fighting for anything but he was scheduled to play Carlsen with black! Find out below in the excellent report of IM V. Indrajeet becomes Maharashtra U-25 State Champion

Maharashtra State Selection U-25 Youth FIDE Rating Championship 2018 was organized by Amateur Chess Association Nasik (ACAN) from 9th to 13th Aug 2018. Altogether 185 players participated in the event which was won by the top seed Indrajeet Mahindrakar of Aurangabad. Indrajeet scored a solid 8.0/9 and remained half-a-point ahead of the field to take the title. Chief Arbiter of the event, FA Vivek Suhas Sohani send us a report.

Sinquefield Cup: Caruana maintains his lead going into the last round

All games in the 2018 Sinquefield Cup's 8th round ended in draws. Going into the final round, Fabiano Caruana maintains his lead of .5 points but the margin is very thin as four other players are trailing by just half point at 4.0/8 points. So the event is still open and anything can happen in the last round. The World Championship fever has begun!

The countdown has begun. We are just 74 days away from witnessing one of the youngest and the strongest world chess championship matches in history. Both players are above 2800 Elo and hold the top two spots in the world rankings. It's also the first time an American player has a chance to win the chess crown since Fischer-Spassky, 1972 if we exclude Kamsky-Karpov 1996 match. The 7th round of the Sinquefield Cup a.k.a "Super Saturday" was a big one due to the final showdown of Carlsen and Caruana before facing each other for the world title in London. 11-year-old CM Aditya Mittal has analysed this particular game in great depth and details and has shared it with us.

Xtracon Chess Open 2018: Hammer wins, Prantik Roy and 11-year-old Vedant Saravana shine

Xtracon Chess Open is one of Denmark's largest, strongest and most exciting chess tournament with as many as 9 different events going along side by side. This year was no different as more than 2000 games were played in this 9 days event which started from 21-07-2018 and lasted till 29-07-2018. Towards the end there was a lot of fight and drama over the board and finally two players tied for the first place spot with 8.5/10 points each, Dmitry Andreikin of Russia and Hammer Jon Ludvig of Norway, with slightly better tie-break score the title went to the later. Below is a report of this exciting tourney.

Sinquefield Cup: Caruana holds Carlsen in their final bout before world title clash

The seventh round of the 2018 Sinquefield Cup was the most awaited round of the event. The reigning world champion, Magnus Carlsen, was slated to face his title challenger, Fabiano Caruana, one last time before their World Championship match in London later this year. At some point, Magnus came very close to breaking through Caruana's seemingly bulletproof Petroff but with precise play, the newly elected world championship challenger managed to hold the mighty Magnus. With this draw, Caruana also maintained his lead in the tournament as all other games ended peacefully. Sinquefield Cup 2018 Round 6: Caruana in sole lead after beating Karjakin

With a straightforward win against the former world championship contender Karjakin, current contender of the world championship Fabiano Caruana took the sole lead at the end of the round 6 in Sinquefield Cup 2018 and with this win Caruana has inched closer to Carlsen in the live rating list. If he is able to beat Carlsen in the epic 7th round encounter then Caruana would become world number 1 for the first time in his life.
