Vishy misses his ticket to London, the biggest ever event on Indian soil comes to an end

The penultimate event of the Grand Chess Tour 2019 - Tata Steel Chess India came to an end with Magnus Carlsen showing his best ever GCT performance, scoring 27 points out of a total 36. The World Champion dominated right from the start, reclaimed his world no. 1 position in rapid ratings and has moved to number two in blitz. Levon Aronian finished last at the event, but it was good enough to qualify for the GCT finals in London starting from 2nd of December. Bitter heartbreak awaited Vishy Anand and his fans where Vishy was close to qualifying for the finals, but a score of just one point out of the last five rounds, pushed him out of the top four. The Tata Steel Chess India 2019 came to conclusion with yet another stupendous Magnus Carlsen domination. The reigning World Champion proved it once again that he is truly the best in the world by finishing ahead of the rest of the field by as many as four points which included performing at an astronomical 3027 rating in the rapid and scoring an impressive 12.0/18 points in the blitz! The blitz event is much more intense than the rapid. You have to play nine games in four and a half hours. It was quite obvious that the players were quite tired and made a lot of errors. However, you could also see a lot of brilliant moves being played. Magnus Carlsen once again set the tone up with a 6.5/9 performance. He is now the overall leader by a gap of five points over the nearest contender. Carlsen performs at an astronomical 3027 at the Tata Steel India Rapid

Magnus Carlsen performed at an astronomical Elo of 3027 at the Tata Steel Chess India 2019 Rapid. He scored 15.0/18, with six wins and three draws. According to Magnus, this was his best performance ever in rapid format. He gained 36.8 Elo points, taking his rapid rating to 2885. He also overtook MVL and thus became World no.1 in rapid format. Hikaru Nakamura took the second spot with 11.0/18 and Wesley So was third. The tournament has not yet ended. We move to the blitz section with 18 more rounds to be played. The Tata Steel Chess India is taking place from the 22nd to the 26th of November 2019 in Kolkata, India. It is the strongest tournament ever to be held on Indian soil. The participants of the event are Magnus Carlsen, Vishy Anand, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Ding Liren, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala. The super-tournament is additionally the penultimate stop of the Grand Chess Tour and therefore is of even more significance as the players will fight out to make into the top four in terms of their cumulative tour scores and qualify for the finals scheduled to take place in London in the month of December this year. Praloy Sahoo wins a 'Dream Moment'

Top seed of the tournament Praloy Sahoo scored an unbeaten 6.5/7, finished a half point ahead of the competition and won Tata Steel Chess Festival All Bengal under-16 Rapid. That's not all, he had a big moment which still feels like a 'dream' to him as he made the inaugural first move on the board of Anand-Carlsen match of Tata Steel Chess India 2019 Rapid round 7. Five other champions were crowned in under-8, 12 and 16 age group in both boys and girls category. Souhardo Basak, Rajoshnish Bhattacharjee, Debapriya Manna, Arhashirsha Biswas and Anwesha Sinha are the winners in various age group categories. Magnus Carlsen does not cease to impress. This time it was not just on the chess board! He was called as the guest of honour along with Vishy Anand to open the day two of the cricket test match between India and Bangladesh. In between rounds four and five, he entertained one and all with his Football skills. Last but not the least, he was an absolute monster on the board as he completely outplayed Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri. His last game for the day was a draw against Vidit Gujrathi. Magnus now has a lead of three points with 10.0/12. He is followed by Hikaru Nakamura and Wesley So. Mayank Chakraborty and Anupam Sreekumar are the National Under-11 Champions

Mayank Chakraborty of Assam scored 9.5/11 and finished a half point ahead of the runner-ups to clinch the championship. Both Ilamparthi A R of Tamil Nadu and Kshatriya Nitin Vekhande of Maharashtra scored 9.0/11 each and they were placed second and third respectively. Top seed Anupam M Sreekumar of Kerala dominated the girls section as she scored a mammoth 10.5/11 and finished two full points ahead of the competition. Mrittika Mallick of West Bengal, Arshiya Das of Tripura and Palak Mohapatra of Odisha, all three of them of scored 8.5/11 each. Magnus Carlsen dominates day one of Tata Steel Chess India 2019 Rapid

The strongest ever tournament on Indian, in fact Asian soil, kicked off on the 22nd of November 2019. Three rounds of rapid chess were played on day one. Six years ago, on this very day Magnus Carlsen had become the World Champion by beating Anand in Chennai. Carlsen continued from where he left and now leads the tournament with 5.0/6. He is followed by Nakamura on 4.0/6. Somak Palit wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2019 Open Blitz

IM Somak Palit scored 6.5/7 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival All Bengal Open Blitz 2019. He received a huge beautiful trophy and ₹10000 cash as a prize for his efforts. In the penultimate round, Somak had a narrow escape against Debankan Dhara which the eventual champion survived using stalemate trick. IM Mitrabha Guha also finished at 6.5/7 but due to a lower tie-break score, he had to settle for second place. IM Sayantan Das scored 6.0/7 and he was placed third according to his tie-break score. Total 118 players including 7 IMs participated from all across the state of West Bengal, in this seven-round Blitz tournament with a time control of 3 mins + 2 seconds each. Magnus Carlsen takes on the Vishy Anand best games quiz

Chess is spread all over the city of Kolkata! Some players were at the Gariahat Chess Club, some at Alekhine Chess Club, some at DDDBCA, some at Tata Steel office! The opening ceremony took place in Taj Bengal and the photoshoot was done at the National Library! India's former top cricketer Sourav Ganguly was a part of the opening ceremony! Amidst all of this, we managed to do a small quiz with the World Champion Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi and Erwin l'Ami. The quiz dealt with the best games of Anand's chess career (because the players were in India and Vishy will 50 in a few days!) and the players had to guess Anand's best move and also the opponent in the game. Magnus Carlsen impressed one and all with his memory power! First Official Fischer Random World Champion Wesley So visited DDDBCA for a Q&A session and distribute a few prizes for Intra Academy tournament. Ding Liren and Hikaru Nakamura visited the Gariahat Chess Club to play a little bit of street chess. It is the only open air club in the world which is on 24x7, 365 days a year and it is open-for-all. 16-year-old IM Aronyak Ghosh held World #3 Ding Liren to a draw in a friendly blitz game. In a battle of Arjuna Awardees, Tania Sachdev beat Dibyendu Barua, in a warm-up friendly game for the audience. Mrudul Dehankar wins AICF Gujarat WGM

Mrudul Dehankar, the 15-year-old talent from Nagpur, played a sparkling game in the last round of AICF International Women Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament to wrest the lead from Aakanksha Hagawane and finish a full point ahead of the rest of the field with 8.0/11 points. After eleven rounds three players, namely Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Olga Babiy, and Aakanksha scored 7.0/11 each and were placed second, third, and fourth respectively on the basis of tie-breaks. Invitation to Bhopal International GM Tournament 2019

Bhopal International GM Tournament steps into its third year and this time it is going to be much bigger. Although it is the eighth edition of this tournament because from 2012-2016, for five consecutive years international rating tournament was organized. From 21st-28th December 2019, many strong GMs will be seen in action from various parts of the world. The total prize fund has been increased to ₹1414000, which makes this the biggest tournament of central India. One of the biggest attraction of this year's edition is the Blitz tournament is now open to all players around the tournament.
