We are all aware of many chess players who we see in tournaments playing for decades. While some of them either have or had a steady job, many of them devoted their entire lifetime for chess, introduced various players to the game, helped discover talent and contributed to the sport in various ways. Some of them might have had financial or other difficulties but that did not deter their dedication to what made them happy, being around chess. Opera Euro Rapid SF Day 1: Carlsen beats Vachier-Lagrave, Radjabov struggles against So

After having a tough day against Dubov, Carlsen made a strong comeback by beating Vachier-Lagrave 2.5-0.5 in the Semi-Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Opera Euro Rapid. Although Carlsen won the first set in minimum number of games, he missed a quicker win in the third game. So and Radjabov traded wins in the first three games. Radjabov made an incorrect sacrifice in the third game which cost him the full point. Both Vachier-Lagrave and Radjabov now must win their second set to force tie-breaks and keep Final hopes alive. Unfortunately due to the lockdown like situation nothing is moving in your city. What do you do? Does it make sense to form your own chess club, tie-up with a cafe, create an instagram page and hold your first chess event? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, this is exactly what Akshay Natu, a regular viewer of the ChessBase India YouTube channel and a chess enthusiast, did. He setup the UP 32 knights chess club in Lucknow and on 7th of February, held the first over-the-board meet! The chess community that we have built up on our channel on YouTube is simply amazing! It was just another day at office for Sagar and Amruta, who were commentating on the Opera Euro Rapid Quarter Finals day 1. All of a sudden one super chat followed the other and quite some money was received! At that point Amruta announced that all of this money would be utilized for Indian chess! It was amazing to see how the viewers supported this initiative and in a little over an hour we collected a total of Rs.1,41,007! Read how it all transpired!

It is safe to say that we all like when our hard work and efforts are appreciated by a public acknowledgement. The sense of pride and happiness satiate all the tireless time and work one has put to overcome all odds. GMs Adhiban, Sethuraman, Gukesh, Laxman and WGM Nandhidhaa have won countless prizes and accolades. On Monday 8th February when Tamil Nadu government awarded them the prestigious Chief Minster's Outstanding Sports Persons award, it was such a fantastic moment for them, their family and the entire chess fraternity.

Opera Euro Rapid QF Day 2: Dubov pushes Carlsen to his limit

Carlsen was once against brought to his limit by his 'Kryptonite' Dubov. The former world rapid champion won two consecutive games in the second set to force tie-breaks. Once again he won on demand but lost the Armageddon and did not have another fairytale ending. The in-form Vachier-Lagrave drew the second set 2-2 against Aronian to advance to the Semi-Finals. Radjabov-Giri made five consecutive draws before the Airthings Masters winner beat Giri to advance to the next stage. Semi-Finals will start tonight from 9:30 p.m. IST. At just 17 years of age, Arjun Erigaisi from Warangal, Telangana is all set to become one of the best chess players in the world. But how did it all begin? Who were the people who helped him on his journey of chess? What are his qualities that have helped him to climb the ladder of chess improvement so quickly? Saishyam Srikanth interviews Arjun and brings out an enlightening portrait of the youngster. Also interviewed in this article are Arjun's close friend Nihal Sarin, his current coach Srinath Narayanan, and Sagar Shah, who has been following his chess journey closely for several years now.

Vidit Gujrathi had a fantastic opportunity against Carlsen as he had a huge advantage and if he spotted the correct intermediate move who knows Vidit might have been in the knockout stage of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Opera Euro Rapid. After that Vidit scored four solid draws to finish his tournament with 6.5/15. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Opera Euro Rapid Day 2 of the prelims witnessed only 45% decisive games. Carlsen drew four consecutive games before beating Nakamura to maintain his sole lead 7.0/10. So and Giri are at the shared second place at 6.5/10. Vidit had fantastic chances against both Nepomniachtchi and Nakamura but he drew them both. Then he beat Dubov convincingly. The only loss came against Ding Liren in the last game of the day. Vidit is now at 4.5/10. Day 3 starts tonight from 9:30 p.m. IST. Over the Board tournaments are making a comeback in Pune with the 11th Alurkar Memorial rapid

After nearly a hiatus of a year, over-the-board (OTB) tournaments are making a comeback. The 11th Late Prof.Wamanrao Dattatray Alurkar Memorial Open Rapid Chess Tournament was held on the 7th of February 2021 in Pune with 90 players taking part. The tournament was organized by the well-known Buddhibal Kreeda Trust. We bring you some of the pictures of the event and also the measures that were implemented for a smooth conduct of the event. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni won the event with 6.0/7. He was tied at the top with Keval Nirgun.

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Opera Euro Rapid Day 1 of the prelims witnessed a staggering 60% decisive games, out of which 79.17% games were won by white. Carlsen took sole lead at the end of day 1 with 4.0/5, however he did not have the perfect start as he lost against So in the very first round. The world champion is trailed by So and Nepomniachtchi at 3.5/5 respectively. Vidit scored 2.0/5, he bounced back quickly and defeated Leinier in Round 2 after starting the event with a loss against Shankland. Day 2 starts tonight from 9:30 p.m. IST. First FIDE World University Online Championships announced

After FIDE announced First World Corporate Championship last December, a lot of College and University students wondered when will their turn come. Well, your time has come as FIDE has announced First FIDE World Online Chess Championship which is open to students born in 1995 or after. The championships will be organized by University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. It will take place on three consecutive weekends starting from 13th March in Individual and Team category in Rapid and Blitz format. Best part is entry is FREE. Vidit Gujrathi returns to Meltwater Champions Chess Tour in Opera Euro Rapid

Vidit Gujrathi returns to Meltwater Champions Chess Tour as he is one of the six players to have gotten a Wild Card for the second Regular event of the Tour - Opera Euro Rapid. The second Regular event has a total prize fund of US$ 100,000 with the first prize being US$ 30,000. Airthings Masters winner Teimour Radjabov will be back in action along with So, Aronian, Carlsen, Vachier-Lagrave, Nakamura, Nepomniachtchi and Dubov.
