The man who just won't back down: Karthik KVK

Kuchibhotla Venkata Krishna Karthik aka Karthik KVK - who recently won the Super Heroes Cup online event- has been a shining star in the chess world since the time he picked up chess in the year 2001. His story is one of struggle, one of determination, and one of success. Throughout, tragic events befell him and his family, and Karthik has braved it all, focusing all his energy solely on the game of chess. His achievements have been numerous, and time spent on preparation long. In this article, we explore the life and journey of this 36-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh. We thank Narasimha Murthy, Shaik Khasim, and Karthik himself for the time given for help with this article. Serbia Open R4: Pranav stuns Perunovic

The number of leaders thinned to one-third from the previous round at the conclusion of Round 4 at Serbia Open 2021. Shevchenko, Petrosyan and Serbia's very own Indjic are among the leaders who are still unscathed. Nihal, Arjun, Raunak and Pranav - all four of them won their respective games to move to 3.5/4. Pranav continues his fantastic momentum as he beat GM Milos Perunovic in this round. He is well on his way to score his final IM-norm and perhaps a GM-norm too in the process. Levon Aronian wins Goldmoney Asian Rapid

The two-time World Cup winner Levon Aronian has hit the form at the right time. Just days before the FIDE World Cup, the Armenian won his first event at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Goldmoney Asian Rapid is also Aronian's first tournament victory of this year. He was completely dominant in the second set as he won both games and the second one was arguably Aronian's best victory of the tournament. Serbia Open R2-3: Pranav V holds Raunak to a draw

Nine players including the top seed of the event, Fedoseev is in the lead with a 100% score at the conclusion of Round 3 at Serbia Open 2021. The other leaders are - Asadli, Kovalenko, Petrosyan, Shevchenko, Indjic, Basso, Serbian GM Bogosavljevic and the only IM among them Ozenir from Turkey. Among the Indians, Nihal, Arjun, Raunak and Pranav are at 2.5/3 each respectively. Pranav has so far delivered an impressive performance. Levon Aronian has all the momentum to win his first event at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Previously he was in the Finals of Airthings Masters but he was unsuccessful to win it. The Armenian won the first set 2.5-1.5 against Artemiev. The debutant Russian must win the second set to force blitz tie-breaks. Carlsen won the first set against Ding Liren for the 3rd-4th place match. Ding Liren will also have to win the second set to force tie-breaks. Abhimanyu Mishra becomes the youngest GM in the history of chess

Hailing from New Jersey, USA, Abhimanyu Mishra, a 12-year-old boy from Indian origin has taken the world of chess by storm, by achieving his final norm on the 30th of June 2021 at the Vezerkepzo GM Mix at Budapest, Hungary. With his victory of GM Leon Mendonca, Abhimanyu completed all the formalities to become a grandmaster! He has become the youngest GM in the history of the game at the age of 12 years 4 months and 25 days, edging out Karjakin's previously held record by 66 days! Abhimanyu is a tremendous talent and in this article we tell you all about his skills, both on and off the board that have helped him become a grandmaster at such a young age.  

Goldmoney Asian Rapid SF Day 2: Aronian knocks out Carlsen

Both Carlsen and Ding Liren were the favorites to advance to the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. However, Aronian and Artemiev won their respective second sets to force blitz tie-breaks and they won them too. Carlsen again started the day with a loss which happened for the sixth time out of the seven days of the event. He also lost a total of four times out of six games. Aronian will now face tour debutant Artemiev in the Finals while Carlsen will play against Ding Liren for the 3rd-4th place match. Serbia Open 2021 witnesses the participation of 479 players, combining both Masters and Amateur section. A total of 30 Indians are taking part in this event. Fedoseev is the top seed, 14 players are rated 2600 and above. Nihal, Abhimanyu, Arjun and Raunak made a winning start. Nihal will face IM Raja Rithvik and Raunak will go against IM Raahil Mullick in Round 2 which starts today at 1:30 p.m. IST. This is the last stop before the FIDE World Cup for - Fedoseev, Kuzubov, Pichot, Nihal, Indjic, Ivanisevic, Ivic, Fier, Kadric and Sanal. Manish Anto Cristiano from Tamil Nadu becomes the latest IM of India

Tamil Nadu is the strongest state in the country as it has the maximum number of Grandmasters and International Masters. 15-year-old Manish Anto Cristiano F is the latest IM of India. He completed his final IM-norm last month at Budapest, Hungary in Vezerkepzo GM June 2021. He earned his first IM-norm at Riga Technical University Open 2019, crossed 2400 in live ratings the following month. The boy scored his second IM-norm in First Saturday GM February 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the inevitable. FIDE WSCC SF: Harika eliminates Lagno, advances to the Final

Harika continued her fantastic performance in the FIDE chess.com Women's Speed Chess Championship to beat former Women's World Rapid and current three-time Women's World Blitz champion, Kateryna Lagno. At the end of all Blitz and Bullet segments, the score was tied 11.5-11.5. Harika won the first bullet tie-break game, she lost the next one, drew the third game and finally won the fourth bullet game to win the Semi-Final 14.0-13.0. Carlsen has once again started his day with a loss, this time against Aronian in the Semi-Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. The world champion immediately struck back in the second game, drew the next and finished the day with a win. Carlsen won the first set 1.5-2.5. Artemiev and Ding Liren also started the day with a draw, however Ding Liren won the next two games, handing Artemiev his first defeat in the knockout stage. Ding Liren won the first set 0.5-2.5. Goldmoney Asian Rapid QF Day 2: Arjun's dream debut comes to an end

Arjun Erigaisi's phenomenal debut at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid came to an end as he lost the tie-breaks. Arjun played absolutely fantastic chess for five days against the best of the best of the world and he managed to hold his own. Aronian will face Carlsen in the Semi-Finals who had to beat his nemesis So in the blitz tie-breaks to secure his place. Artemiev once again dominated Giri, as he is yet to lose a single game in the Knockout stage. Ding Liren made a strong comeback to beat Duda and setup a clash with Artemiev in the next stage. Semi-Finals will start today from 4:30 p.m. IST.

Sensational Nihal clinches Silver Lake Open 2021

Nihal Sarin scored a victory in the last round to win Silver Lake Open 2021 with an unbeaten 8.0/9, a full point ahead of the competition. Nihal performed at 2807, gained 17 Elo rating points. He needed to win the last round to become a clear champion because a draw meant Raunak's result would decide his fate. Both runner-up Raunak Sadhwani and second runner-up Abhimanyu Puranik scored 7.0/9 each and they were also undefeated. They were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-breaks. Goldmoney Asian Rapid QF Day 1: Arjun Erigaisi ends Aronian's unbeaten streak

Arjun Erigaisi ended Aronian's undefeated run at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. He beat the two-time World Cup winner in their very second game of the Quarter-Finals. The set ended in 2-2. Duda and Ding Liren also had 2-2 score in their grueling first set. Carlsen and Artemiev won the first set against So and Giri respectively. While So managed to equalize the first set by winning the second game then he lost the third and drew the fourth, Artemiev scored a hat-trick and won the first set by a 0-3 whitewash. So and Giri must win the second set to force tie-breaks. Quarter-Finals will continue today from 4:30 p.m. IST.
