Magnus Carlsen convincingly clinches Clutch Chess 2025 by winning it with two games to spare

Magnus Carlsen won Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2025 with two games to spare. The World no.1 started the final day with two wins against the World Champion, D Gukesh. Then he defeated Fabiano Caruana in consecutive games to win the event. The last two games against Hikaru Nakamura was immaterial, so he just drew them. Carlsen scored 25.5/36. Caruana secured second place scoring 16.5/36. Nakamura third 14/36 and Gukesh fourth 10/36. Carlsen once again asserted his dominance once he got himself enough rest and showed the world why he is considered as the undisputed 'greatest of all time'. Photo: Lennart Ootes

FM Nico Stelmaszyk (GER), CM Soham Datar, Martin Heider (GER), Daniel Kurpriyanov (UKR) and GM Hagen Poetsch (GER) scored 5.5/7 each at 18th Worms Nibelungen Open 2025. Nico became champion. The remaining were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was €5100. The top three prizes were €1000, €500 and €350 each. The four-day seven round Rating Open tournament was organized by SV Worms 1878 e.V. at Auditorium of the Paternus School, Grabenstraße in Worms-Pfeddersheim, Germany from 2nd to 5th October 2025. Harsha Bharathakoti wins Brennan's Open 2025

GM Harsha Bharathakoti and IM Tianqi Wang (USA) scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 each at Brennan's Open 2025 Open. Harsha won the tournament. His sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, GM Illya Nyzhnyk (UKR) in the penultimate round. The total prize fund was US$ 4200. The top three prizes were US$ 1000, $600 and $400 in the Open section. The three-day five round Rating Open tournament was organized by Saint Louis Chess Club at Chase Park Plaza Hotel in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA from 3rd to 5th October 2025. Utsab Chatterjee clear first at 47th Citta di Arco Open 2025

IM Utsab Chatterjee scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 47th Citta di Arco International Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Frank Zeller (GER) scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. GM Keith Arkell (ENG), Matteo Montorsi (ITA) and Simon Schellenberg (ITA) scored 7/9 each. They finished third, fourth and fith respectively. The top three prizes were €650, €500 and €400 along with a cup each. The nine-day nine round  Rating Open tournament was organized by IA IO Cristina Pernici Rigo at Casino di Arco in Arco, Trentino, Italy from 4th to 12th October 2025. Subhabrata Roy is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to finish tenth in Classical and with the same score he finished second in Blitz. IM Manish Anto Cristiano F, GM Laxman R R, FM J Ramakrishna, IM Mohamed Anees M and B Vignesh scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at ChessFusion Rapid Rating Open 2025. Manish won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining four were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹30000 and ₹18000 along with a trophy each. Laxman won the Blitz Open scoring an unbeaten 8.5/9. FM Aditya Varun Gampa and IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored 8/9 each. Clutch Chess 2025 R4-6: Carlsen soars to the top despite two losses against Caruana

The World Champion, D Gukesh had a tough day at Cluch Chess Champions Showdown 2025. He had a winless second day. Gukesh suffered two losses against Magnus Carlsen. Then he drew the first game against Hikaru Nakamura. In the second game, he got a solitary chance in a relatively balanced rook endgame. However, he missed it and it ended in a draw. He lost the next game against Fabiano Caruana and finished the day with a draw. Carlsen lost his first game of the event against Caruana. The World no.1 suffered a second loss against Caruana too. He has taken sole lead 11.5/18. Caruana is close behind at 10.5/18. Nakamura and Gukesh are at 7/18 each. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Ahaz E U scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. FM John Veny Akkarakaran, Karan J P, Jayaraj Gowrishankar and WFM Kalyani Sirin scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. Agnivo Chakraborty and Rupam Mukherjee scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 3rd Nitai Ghosh Memorial Rating Open 2025. Agnivo won the tournament on tie-breaks, Rupam secured second place. Five players - Srijon Saha, Ankit Das, Hrishikesh Kumar Banik, Rishan Debnath and Mrityunjay Kumar scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹80000, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. Clutch Chess 2025 R1-3: World Champion Gukesh makes a great start, beats Caruana twice

The World Champion continues his momentum from 40th European Chess Club Cup 2025 double Gold triumph. Straight from Rhodes, Greece, he travelled to Saint Louis, Missouri in USA for Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2025. He played a great game against the World no.1, Magnus Carlsen. However, he could not find the perfect defence in an extremely complex position with only 14 seconds left on the clock. He resigned like a gentleman instead of letting his clock run out. In the second game, Gukesh drew against Carlsen. Then he defeated Hikaru Nakamura in Round 2 with a great display of his positional understanding. Their second game was an uneventful draw. In the third round, Gukesh defeated Fabiano Caruana in both games to grab an early lead 4/6. Carlsen is breathing down his neck at 3.5/6, followed by Nakamura 3/6 and Caruana 1.5/6. It’s been a week since the chess world lost one of its brightest lights. The news of GM Daniel Naroditsky’s passing was shared on 20th October 2025 by Charlotte Chess Center, leaving everyone in deep shock and sorrow. Some knew him as a commentator, some as a player, some as a teacher, but to everyone, he was an inspiration. His detailed insights mixed with humour drew players in from all corners of the world. Daniel was loved by millions! Despite his immense talent, he always stayed humble, curious, and eager to learn from anyone! This article is a tribute to this great soul! Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana and D Gukesh will face each other in Rapid format at Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2025. On day 1, each win is worth 1 point and $1000, for day 2, each win is worth 2 points and $2000, a win on day 3 will fetch 3 points and $3000. Total prize fund is US$ 412000. Winner will get $12000, runner-up $90000, second runner-up $70000 and fourth $60000. There will be an additional $72000 bonus. The money from all drawn games accumulates each day into a pool (Champion's Jackpot) that shall be added to the overall winner’s prize. Kishan Gangolli wins Gold at 2nd FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2025

Kishan Gangolli scored an unbeaten 5/6 to win an individual Gold medal on Board no.3 at 2nd FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2025. In the previous edition in 2023, Kishan won Silver on the same board with the exact same board. This time also he remained undefeated. It was the sole medal for India. Team FIDE 1 became overall champion, scoring an unbeaten 11/12. The defending champion, Poland secured Silver. They scored sole 10/12 and also remained unbeaten. Pranav Venkatesh dominates 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025 Cradle of Modern Chess

The reigning World Junior 2025 champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh won 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025 with a round to spare. Former World Champion, GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR) was the only one who had chances of stopping his momentum. However, in their rematch, he could not seize his advantage, allowing Pranav once again to get the upper hand and win the game. Pranav won the next two games to become the champion 9.5/10, finishing a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the runner-up, Ponomariov. WGM Nadya Toncheva (BUL) scored an impressive 5/10 to finish third.
