Karthikeyan Murali 6.5/8 is on the verge of winning the 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. He just needs a draw in the final round as he has a better tie-breaks than his pursuers. A win would guarantee his championship. Although Gukesh could spoil his chances since he will face Karthikeyan in the final round. Gukesh, Salem and Eljanov are the only three players at 6.0/8. Nihal drew his game against Kamsky in the penultimate round. Thus his chances of winning the event got dashed. Alekseenko outplayed Gelfand to bring himself in the championship picture. On 3rd of August 2021, Harshit Raja, the 20-year-old youngster from Pune Maharashtra, drew his game against Dennis Wagner at the Biel Masters Open 2021 and achieved his final GM norm with one round to spare. With this sparkling performance Harshit also managed to cross the rating barrier of 2500 and became India's 69th grandmaster! Harshit is a perfect example of how one can balance chess + academics, as he pursuing his dual degree in finance and economics from the University of Mizzou, USA. Chessable Masters Day 3: So tops the Prelims

The top two positions at the points table remained unchanged at the conclusion of the third day of prelims at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. So won the prelims with an unbeaten 11.0/15 followed by Aronian at 10.5/15. Firouzja and Nakamura also scored 10.5/15 each. Artemiev, Liem, Mamedyarov and Jorden van Foreest are the other Quarterfinalists. Abhimanyu Mishra scored his sole victory of the event against Harikrishna. Alexandra Kosteniuk wins the FIDE Women's World Cup 2021

Karjakin becomes the first finalist at the FIDE World Cup 2021 as he beat Fedoseev to secure his place in the Finals and the next FIDE Candidates tournament. Carlsen-Duda fight is just not over yet. If history is any indication, then we might just see another slobber knocker match like Carlsen-Esipenko. Duda is the only player who is still undefeated in the FIDE World Cup so far. Alexandra Kosteniuk won the first FIDE Women's World Cup. She remained undefeated throughout the event and did not require to play a single tie-break game. Karthikeyan Murali remains in the sole lead as he drew with Pavel Eljanov in the seventh round of 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. Eljanov maintains his chase 5.5/7. They are followed by eight players at 5.0/7. IM Harshit Raja continues his quest for the GM title as he drew with GM Alexander Donchenko. Raunak Sadhwani showed great tenacity against Sethuraman to salvage a draw. Nihal drew with Keymer and Kamsky won his game against Pichot. The gap increased to four points now. Chessable Masters Day 2: So remains unbeaten in the first ten

Aronian made the biggest climb on the second day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. The Armenian scored a massive 4.5/5, jumping from tenth to second place. Former world blitz champion, Le Quang Liem is the second-highest gainer as he scored an unbeaten 4.0/5 to move to second position. Artemiev scored only 2.0/5. The battle of Carlsen-Duda and Fedoseev-Karjakin in the Semifinals of FIDE World Cup 2021 ended in draws. It was not a quick or quiet draw. All four players cautiously tested their opponent, but they all were very careful to make a mistake and cause a decisive result. After making a recovery from a completely lost position, Kosteniuk won the first game in the Finals of FIDE Women's Open Cup against Goryachkina. Twelfth seed Karthikeyan Murali maintained his sole lead by scoring a victory over Sethuraman in the sixth round of 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. Eljanov is the only player who is a half point behind him 5.0/6. They will face each other in a crucial game in the seventh round. IM Harshit Raja scored a fine victory over GM Abhimanyu Puranik. GM Raunak Sadhwani held GM Maksim Chigaev to a marathon draw. Yesterday was a rest day for the GMT. The fifth round of GMT and seventh round of MTO will start at 5:30 p.m. IST today. Savitha Shri wins AICF National Junior Girls Online 2021

WFM Savitha Shri B of Tamil Nadu won her fourth National age group title as she beat Vantika in the Armageddon to become AICF National Junior Girls Online 2021 champion. She won ₹25000 cash prize. WIM Vantika Agrawal of Delhi secured second position. She earned ₹18000. Four players finished at 8.5/11. According to the Playoffs, WIM Priyanka K was placed third, and she got ₹15000. Total prize fund for the event was ₹125000 for the top 20 places. Tamil Nadu claimed two out of top three podium places. However, West Bengal scored three places out of the top ten. The first day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters witnessed quite a few exciting games. Three Indians are taking part in this event, out of them Adhiban made a good start, 3.0/5. Wesley So has taken a sole lead 4.0/6. Artemiev, Nakamura and Firouzja are just a half point behind him 3.5/6. World's youngest GM Abhimanyu Mishra pushed too hard against So and lost the game which could have been a draw. In the next round, he lost to Nakamura due to a mouse slip in a theoretically drawn position. His only scoring game was a draw against Humpy in the fifth round. Round 6 starts today at 8:30 p.m. IST. Nihal Sarin wins Biel GMT Blitz 2021

Nihal Sarin asserted his dominance in the Blitz as he scored 9.5/14 to win the Biel GMT Blitz 2021. He moved to the third spot with 24 points. Alekseenko also has the same score. The GMT overall leader Gata Kamsky is still in the lead 25.5 points, despite having a difficult Blitz event. Only three rounds left in the GMT Classical event. Since the score for a win is four points, Nihal can still win the entire event. He is yet to win a single game in the Classical segment. His last three opponents are - Keymer, Kamsky and Lagarde. To win the entire tournament, Nihal would need to win at least one game, two wins puts him in a good position for the championship. Today is a rest day for the GMT. Vishy Anand to lead the strongest team India at FIDE Online Olympiad 2021

A little over two weeks ago, FIDE announced about its second edition of the Online Olympiad which will take place between 13th August and 15th September 2021. Vishy Anand will once again spearhead the Indian team to go for a second Gold medal. The team comprises - Anand, Harikrishna, Vidit, Adhiban, Nihal, Praggnanandhaa, Humpy, Harika, Tania, Bhakti, Vaishali and Savitha. Gukesh and Srinath Narayanan will be providing support to the team. The second last Regular event before the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals, Chessable Masters starts on Saturday 31sth July. It will feature three Indian players - Pentala Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy and Baskaran Adhiban. For the first time, a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event will feature two women - Wenjun Ju and Koneru Humpy. The tournament will witness only five players from the previous event. FIDE World Cup 2021 QF TB: Resilient Karjakin knocks out Shankland

Shankland and Karjakin had an absolute slobber knocker match in the Quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup. All six games ended decisively and for the second time in their match, Karjakin showed resiliency as he won a game on demand once again to keep himself in the event and eventually managed to knockout his opponent. It will be an All-Russian battle in the Semifinals between Karjakin and Fedoseev which means one Russian is guaranteed to be in the Finals of FIDE World Cup. The first ever FIDE Women's World Cup is guaranteed to have a Russian winner as Goryachkina and Kosteniuk will battle each other in the Finals. Today is a rest day. Gata Kamsky maintained his sole lead 19.5 points at the conclusion of fourth round at 54th Biel International Chess Festival 2021 GMT. Nihal overcame adversity against Studer to salvage a draw. He is at fourth place 14.5 points. In the MTO section, Ganguly drew with Praggnanandhaa, although the former had a decent chance. Karthikeyan Murali beat the top seed, Salem Saleh, to take the sole lead 4.5/5. Sethuraman, Ganguly, Praggnanandhaa along with Eljanov and Banusz are in pursuit 4.0/5. Today is a rest day for MTO. Their Round 6 will be played tomorrow. GMT will have Blitz today and a rest day tomorrow. The standings will change a lot and Nihal would like to jump to the top of the points table.
