FIDE Ethics imposes a six-month ban on Karjakin

The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission has banned Sergey Karjakin 'from participating as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition' all over the world, starting from 21st March 2022. Karjakin's public comments on Russia's military invasion of Ukraine upset the majority of the chess fraternity and the entire world. The ban means Karjakin will not be able to play FIDE Candidates 2022 which is slated to take place in Madrid, Spain from 16th June to 5th July 2022. GM Sergey Shipov, a regular commentator, was not banned because, "In comparison with Sergey Karjakin, Sergei Shipov is considerably less known and has, therefore, a less powerful platform." Bangladesh Police does a hat-trick of Premier League triumphs

Bangladesh Police scored a hat-trick of Bangladesh Premier League wins by winning Golden Jubilee of Independence Premier Division Chess League 2021. The team scored an unbeaten 20.0/22. They have not lost a single match since 2019. This was the first time, among their three consecutive triumphs, they conceded two draws against the remaining podium finishers - runner-up SAIF Sporting Club and second runner-up Bangladesh Biman. Charity Cup R9-12: Vidit beats Duda

Vidit Gujrathi remained undefeated on the third day, just like how he started his campaign at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup. He won against Ju Wenjun and Jan-Krzysztof Duda in a pretty similar fashion, drew with Hans Niemann and fellow countryman, Pentala Harikrishna. Vidit is now at eighth position with 18.0/36. He is closely followed by Praggnanandhaa 17.0/36. Harikrishna drew seven games in-a-row. Liem maintains his sole lead 27.0/36, followed by the world champion Magnus Carlsen 24.0/36, Jorden van Foreest 21.0/36 and Ding Liren 20.0/36. Round 13 starts tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST. Sasikiran and Fridman will join Anand and Kramnik at No-Castling World Masters this July

No-Castling World Masters will be expanded this year in Dortmund this July. Last year's Sparkassen Online Open winner Krishnan Sasikiran and Germany's top player, Daniel Fridman will join former World Champions - Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. The 49th edition of International Dortmund Chess Days will have seven events including Deutschland Grand Prix, NRW Youth Cup, Sparkassen NC Online Open and open tournaments will take place at the festival. Charity Cup R5-8: Praggnanandhaa stuns World no.3 Ding Liren

Praggnanandhaa is yet to face Ding Liren in an over-the-board tournament. Their first encounter was a blitz game in May 2021. It ended in a draw. Almost a year later, they faced each other for the very first time at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup in an online rapid game. Praggnanandhaa emerged victorious against the world no.3. He also had a good chance against Duda which he missed in Round 5. Pragg is now at 12.0/24. Vidit 10.0/24 and Harikrishna 8.0/24. Pavel Ponkratov wins 1st Guwahati GM Open, Nitin S third

Top seed of the tournament GM Pavel Ponkratov won the 1st Guwahati International GM Open 2022. Both Ponkratov and GM Fawzy Adham (EGY) scored 8.5/10, however the former edged passed the latter on tie-breaks. IM Nitin S is the best Indian performer of the event. He scored 8.0/10 and secured third place on tie-breaks. FM Aradhya Garg delivered a phenomenal performance to score 8.0/10, earn his final IM-norm and secure fourth place. Vidit Gujrathi made a strong start at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup 2022. He defeated Richard Rapport and Lei Tingjie, drew with David Navara and Praggnanandhaa. Thus, he remained undefeated on the first day of the Prelims. Two wins and two draws means, his score is now 8.0/8. Liem Le Quang and Hans Niemann emerged as the early coleaders 10.0/12. They both scored an identical three wins and a draw each. They are followed by Ding Liren at 9.0/12. The China no.1 spoiled the world champion's day as he beat him in the fourth round. 1st Guwahati GM Open R9: C R G Krishna in a four-way race to the finish

IM C R G Krishna drew his game quickly in just 17 moves against GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez (PAR) in Round 9 of 1st Guwahati International GM Open 2022. They are joined by GM Fawzy Adham (EGY) and GM Pavel Ponkratov who registered victories over IM Sayantan Das and GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE) respectively. To win the tournament, Krishna must win the last round and hope the remaining leaders draw their game. If all four leaders draw their games, there is a possibility of as many as seven players finishing with 8.0/10. Priyanka Nutakki earns WGM title, 3rd in National Women and National Junior Girls champion in 11 days

Priyanka Nutakki became India's 23rd Woman Grandmaster and secured third place at MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship on 2nd March 2022. Exactly a week later, she started as the top seed at MPL 35th National Junior Girls Chess Championship 2022. It was her final attempt. Just like all three previous National age group titles, she won this one also in her final appearance. It is considered final attempt as she becomes ineligible for the following edition as per the age group criteria. How did the 19-year-old girl from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh achieve them all in just a span of eleven tournament days? We find out in this article.

1st Guwahati GM Open R7-8: C R G Krishna joins the three-way lead

IM C R G Krishna overcame a completely lost position and beat GM Deepan Chakkravarthy in the eighth round of 1st Guwahati International GM Open 2022. He joined IM Sayantan Das and GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez (PAR) in the lead. They drew their game against each other. IM Sidhant Mohapatra who beat GM Iniyan P in a brilliant manner in the seventh round, lost to GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE) in Round 8. GM Saptarshi Roy completed his hat-trick by beating IM Ortik Nigmatov in a picturesque finish. He is in the chase along with Azer, Pavel Ponkratov and Fawzy Adham. The second event of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season will be Charity Cup. It is a fundraiser tournament for UNICEF. All players are encouraged to donate their earnings. The tournament is dedicated to the victims of the war in Ukraine. India will be represented heavily in this event by Vidit Gujrathi, Harikrishna Pentala and Praggnanandhaa. They will be joined by Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Liem Quang Le, Hans Niemann, Eric Hansen along with the debutants - Richard Rapport, David Navara and Lei Tingjie and also the returning Gawain Jones, Jorden van Foreest, David Anton Guijarro and World Women's Champion Ju Wenjun. IM Sayantan Das had a great opportunity to win against IM Ratnakaran K in the sixth round of 1st Guwahati International GM Open 2022. The Indian Tal managed to make a great escape and salvage a draw from a completely lost endgame. Prraneeth Vuppala becomes the latest International Master of India

15-year-old Prraneeth Vuppala became the latest International Master of India on 15th March 2022. The Telangana boy scored his final IM-norm and maiden GM-norm at the same event First Saturday GM March 2022. He scored his first IM-norm at the age of 11 years back in October 2018. He crossed 2400 and secured his second IM-norm at Vergani Cup January 2022. His live rating is now 2430.4. He is two GM-norms and 69.6 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next GM. IM Ratnakaran K and IM Sayantan Das emerged as the coleaders after Round 5 of 1st Guwahati International GM Open 2022. Ratnakaran won both games with a brilliant display of attack against GM Karthik Venkataraman and GM Fawzy Adham (EGY).
