10th Norway Chess 2022 R3: Anand beats Hao in Armageddon, maintains sole lead

Vishy Anand played his first Armageddon of 10th Norway Chess 2022 in the third round against Hao Wang. He won the must-win game convincingly. The maestro maintained his sole lead 7.5/9. Magnus Carlsen and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave scored their first Classical victories of the event against Teimour Radjabov and Aryan Tari respectively. Wesley So gave Anish Giri a taste of his own medicine. Although it was completely winning for the Fischer Random world champion, he drew as it was enough for him to win the match. Pune, Maharashtra's next big talent is FM Aditya S Samant. There is no doubt that he is going to become an IM. The 15-year-old already has an IM-norm. He drew with the top seed Farrukh Amonatov in the third round, showing his tenacity. In the fourth round, he scored a win against IM N Krishna Teja with a great display of attack. Currently he is the only non IM/GM player unbeaten at 3.5/4 out of eleven players. IM Anup Deshmukh continues his impressive run as he drew with Amonatov in another exciting battle. Vishy Anand scored his second consecutive Classical victory at 10th Norway Chess 2022. The win over his former rival, Veselin Topalov, earned him enough rating points to reenter the World top 10 rankings. His live rating is now 2760.7 which makes his current rank no.9. This victory also gave him a sole lead 6/6. In a battle of the reigning world champions, Wesley So defeated Magnus Carlsen for the second time in three days. The Classical game ended in a draw. Revered veteran IM Anup Deshmukh scored an amazing victory over GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE) in the third round of 1st Maharashtra International GM Open 2022. The artist hunted his opponent's king which resulted in a picturesque checkmate. GM Venkatesh M R, GM Karthik Venkataraman and GM Arjun Kalyan are the remaining three Indians who started with a hat-trick of victories. Reigning National Junior Girls champion, WGM Priyanka Nutakki scored an impressive win over GM Mihail Nikitenko in Round 2. Vishy Anand and Wesley So won their Classical games in the first round of 10th Norway Chess 2022. Anand's accuracy against the reigning World Blitz 2021 champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave was off the charts. The Frenchman stood no chance against the maestro. Similarly, the in-form Norway Chess 2022 Blitz winner, So showcased his great understanding in the Italian opening against Teimour Radjabov. The FIDE World Cup 2019 winner is still in search of his form, although the FIDE Candidates 2022 is a little over a fortnight away. 17-year-old 2065-rated Praloy Sahoo scored the biggest upset of the first round against IM Chakravarthi Reddy (2349). Ajay Mushini also had a good chance to beat GM Deepan Chakkravarthi, however he missed, and it ended in a draw. The inaugural edition of Maharashtra International GM Open witnesses the participation of 141 players including 20 GMs, 29 IMs, 6 WGMs and 9 WIMs from 13 countries across the world including India. The average rating of the tournament is 2205. Mitrabha Guha wins the first-ever Dynamo Chess Tournament

GM Mitrabha Guha defeated GM Dibyendu Barua in the Final to win the first-ever Dynamo Chess Tournament. Mitrabha saw the Dynamo Chess for the very first on the same day after appearing for three papers of his college exams. 16 players were invited to participate and experience this new chess variant first hand. Total prize fund was ₹10300. Top three prizes were ₹5100, ₹3100 and ₹2100 along with a trophy each. The prizes were named 'Genius Award' by the inventor of Dynamo Chess, Mr. Pradeep Sadani who also witnessed and enjoyed the exciting games. Sanjib Mali clinches 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022 Category 'C' Below 1600

Starting out as the 23rd seed of the tournament, Sanjib Mali (WB) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9. He finished a half point ahead of the field to win 13th KIIT International Chess Festival Category 'C' Below 1600. 13-year-old Gyana Sai Santhosh M (AP) scored sole 8/9 to finish second. Three players scored 7.5/9 each. KIIT's very own Majhi Fakir was placed third according to the tie-breaks. Total prize fund for Category C was ₹600000. Top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹40000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. A total of 418 players participated from all over the country, Singapore, Sri Lanka and USA in this four-day tournament organized by All Odisha Chess Association and KIIT University. 10th Norway Chess 2022 Blitz: Anand beats Carlsen for the first time in almost five years

Vishy Anand beat Magnus Carlsen in a back and forth exciting battle at 10th Norway Chess 2022 Blitz. Although the world champion ran out of time, the position was completely lost too. The last time Anand beat Carlsen in any format was in World Rapid 2017 which Anand won. Wesley So won the Blitz event with a score of 6.5/9. He finished a full point ahead of the field. World no.1 secured sole second position 5.5/9. Three players shared third place scoring 5/9. They are - Anish Giri, Vishy Anand and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Reigning World Blitz champion had a rough start. He suffered five consecutive losses before winning the remaining four. Abdusattorov wins 5th Sharjah Masters 2022, Abhijeet Gupta third

Reigning World Rapid 2021 champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) drew with Abhijeet Gupta in the final round to win 5th Sharjah Masters 2022. UAE no.1 GM Salem Saleh also finished with 7/9, however he was placed second as Abusattorov had beaten him in the seventh round. Both Abhijeet and Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored 6.5/9 each. Abhijeet was placed third due to better tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 60000. Top three prizes were $10000, $8000 and $7000 along with Gold, Silver and Bronze medal each respectively. The tenth edition of Norway Chess will start today with a Blitz event. It will determine the seeding for the main event, which starts tomorrow. As always, the most interesting thing about this tournament is every game in the main event will have a winner. All draws will be decided in Armageddon. Defending champion of the event, World Champion Magnus Carlsen will return to over-the-board action for the first time since winning the Tata Steel 2022 in January this year. Farrukh Amonatov dominates 13th KIIT GM Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament, GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win 13th KIIT International Chess Festival Category A, He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Nine players scored 7.5/10. GM Stupak Kirill and GM Boris Savchenko were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. IM Ameya Audi 7.5/10 is the highest finisher among Indians. He is also the highest placed non-GM player. WIM Arpita Mukherjee is the only other Indian among the top 10. She is also the top finisher among female participants. Praloy Sahoo victorious at 2nd DD-DBCA Rating Open 2022

Praloy Sahoo scored 8/9 and finished a half point ahead of the competition. He won his first tournament of the year 2nd DD-DBCA Open Rating. Arpan Das and reigning West Bengal State Rapid champion Subhayan Kundu scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Top three prizes were ₹30000 and a trophy, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. This was the first Open Classical Rating tournament in West Bengal since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020. 13th KIIT GM Open R9: Amonatov on the verge of a triumph

GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored another victory in the penultimate round. He defeated IM Mihail Nikitenko to extend his lead by a full point 8/9. The top seed is now just a draw away from winning 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022. Six players are at 7/9 including IM Ameya Audi who will face Amonatov in the final round. KIIT's very own Nilsu Pattnaik and Daksh Goyal beat IM P Saravana Krishnan and IM P Konguvel, FM Ram Aravind L N and Ankit Ray drew with GM Ziaur Rahman (BAN) and IM Asyl Abdyjapar (KGZ) respectively.
