Generation Cup R5-8: Praggnanandhaa sets the board ablaze with Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi grabs sole lead

The latest chapter of the Niemann-Carlsen drama is on everyone's mind after the second day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Julius Baer Generation Cup. However, let's focus on actual chess and some fantastic games which were played. Praggnanandhaa had a barn burner of a game against Magnus Carlsen in the eighth round. The recently turned 17-year-old had some winning chances in the endgame, yet his humane chess earned him a draw, an applause from the world champion and a thumbs up. Actions certainly speak louder than words! Arjun Erigaisi-Levon Aronian saga continued with the former picking up an excellent win. He is now the sole leader 17/24. Chhattisgarh CM Trophy GM Masters R1: Angela stuns Ratnakaran

ChessBase India Hindi's head, Niklesh Jain's better half WIM Franco Valencia Angela scored the biggest upset of the first round of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Trophy GM Open 2022. She defeated IM Ratnakaran in a very sharp battle. IM Anup Deshmukh, recently crowned WIM Srishti Pandey and Chhattisgarh's very own CM Ravi Kumar, all three got themselves very close to beating their Grandmaster opponents. Yet, the seasoned GMs managed to escape with a draw. The tournament witnesses the participation of 127 players including 15 GMs, 23 IMs, 3 WGMs and 11 WIMs from 14 countries across the world including India in the Masters section. Astana GP Round 2: Four decisive games

The second round of FIDE Astana GP 2022 had four decisive games. IM Polina Shuvalova, WGM Zhu Jiner (CHN), IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ), IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL) scored wins over IM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER), WGM Dinara Wagner (GER), GM Alexandra Kosteniuk and IM Vaishali R. Vaishali had a complex game against the Poland no.1 woman. She need to take some chances before going on full defense mode. Eventually her defense succumbed to her opponent's onslaught. Srishti Pandey becomes the latest Woman International Master of India

Srishti Pandey crossed 2200 in the live ratings at 24th Citta di Trieste Chess Festival on 2nd September to become the latest Woman International Master. The National Junior 2019 Girls champion became the second WIM from Nagpur. Srishti earned her first WIM-norm at World Junior Girls 2019. After two years and a month later, she scored her final two WIM-norms in consecutive events at IM Third Saturday Mix 223 and Third Saturday Mix 225 Open in Novi Sad, Serbia. However, she had to wait for almost a year to fulfill the rating criteria to become India's latest Woman International Master. Check out her favorite games annotated by herself among recent events. Generation Cup R1-4: Praggnanandhaa beats Ivanchuk, Duda and Gelfand

Praggnanandhaa started Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Julius Baer Generation Cup with a win over former World Rapid champion, Vasyl Ivanchuk. Then he beat FIDE World Cup 2021 Jan-Krzysztof Duda in hard-fought prolonged battle. He completed his hat-trick with a win over the legendary Boris Gelfand, before succumbing to Christopher Yoo in the final game of the day. Arjun Erigaisi lost to the world champion Magnus Carlsen in the first round. Then he beat B Adhiban, World Blitz 2013 champion Liem Quang Le and Czech Republic no.1 David Navara. Astana GP Round 1: Vaishali makes a solid start

IM Vaishali R made a solid start at Astana GP. She drew her first round game against the former World Rapid and Blitz Women champion, GM Kateryna Lagno. Former World Women's Championship Challenger GM Aleksandra Goryachkina and Germany no.1 woman, IM Elisabeth Paehtz scored the only two wins of the first round against IM Polina Shuvalova and WGM Dinara Wagner respectively. India's Got Chess Talent -The Finale

In life, we often plan something but life always has something else planned for us. That's the best way to describe the finale of the first edition of India's Got Chess Talent. Four teams battled it out to be the winners of the first edition of India's Got Chess Talent. Team Debashis Das was paired against Team Chess Delphinus and Team Chess Pathshala was up against Team Wings of Fire in the semi-finals. The winners went through to the finals to face each other for the championship. The fifth Regular event of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season is Julius Baer Generation Cup. Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi will battle against Magnus Carlsen, Vasyl Ivanchuk and the world's best. The theme of the tournament is generation of chess. They will be joined by Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Liem Quang Le, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Vincent Keymer, David Navara, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Ivan Saric, Boris Gelfand, Hans Niemann and Christopher Yoo. The 16th player was supposed to be the winner of MPL Indian Chess Tour leg 3, GM S L Narayanan. He is unable to take part due to his prior commitments. Ilamparthi A R and Pranav Anand are World Under-14 and Under-16 Open 2022 Champions

Pranav Anand added another accolade to his name after becoming India's 76th Grandmaster. He drew his final round game to clinch the Gold in World Youth Under-16 Open. That is not the only Gold medal India won at this event. Ilamparthi A R also won a Gold medal in the Under-14 Open category. He defeated Filip Magold (ROU) in the final round to finish with 9.5/11. He also won the Anish Giri Deathmatch scholarship worth ₹200000 which was announced yesterday after the boy claimed the Gold. The 12-year-old is also gaining 114.4 Elo rating points. 16/18 Indian participants are gaining rating. The highest gainer is Kanishka S. She is gaining a mammoth 282.4 Elo rating points. Vaishali will make her FIDE Women's GP debut at Astana, Kazakhstan

The first leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2022-23 will start at Astana, Kazakhstan from Sunday 18th September 2022. IM Vaishali R will be the sole Indian participant in the fray. She will replace Koneru Humpy only in this particular leg. The 12-player round robin event will feature GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, GM Kateryna Lagno, IM Alina Kashlinskaya, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva, GM Tan Zhongyi, WGM Dinara Wagner, IM Elisabeth Paehtz, WGM Zhu Jiner, GM Zhansaya Abdumalik, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, IM Vaishali R and IM Polina Shuvalova. World Youth 2022: Pranav Anand becomes India's 76th Grandmaster

15-year-old IM Pranav Anand became India's 76th Grandmaster by winning against IM Emin Ohanyan (ARM) in Round 10 of World Youth Under-16 Open. He is now just a draw away from winning Gold. Ilamparthi A R is also on the verge of winning Gold in Under-14 Open category. He is also in a sole lead 8.5/10. However, he must win his final round game to not leave his fate on tie-breaks. Mrittika Mallick, Amulya Guruprasad and Anupam M Sreekumar - all three are at 7/10 each. Mrittika has the best tie-break among the medal contenders. Castling is a privilege which both sides have in each game. Despite the choice being two, a player can castle only once in the entire game. The choice often determines the fate of the game. It might seem easy, yet the underlying consequences of a correct or a misjudgement can be long term. Mayank Chakraborty dominates 1st All Assam Rapid and Blitz Rating 2022

CM Mayank Chakraborty scored 9/9 and 7.5/8 to win 1st All Assam Rapid and Blitz Rating Chess Tournament 2022. He finished 1.5 and a full point ahead of the field in the Rapid and Blitz event respectively. Top seed in the Rapid, Rajib Dhar scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. Chiraranjan Bhuyan claimed the third place due to better tie-breaks scoring 7/9. In the Blitz event, five players scored 6.5/8. Trailokya Nanda and Manthan Kashyap Datta were adjudged second and third. The total prize fund in the Rapid was ₹45001 cash and trophies. Top three prizes were ₹9001, ₹6500 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each. Blitz event had a prize fund of ₹37000 and trophies. Top three won ₹7000, ₹4500 and ₹3500 with a trophy each. S L Narayanan wins 23rd Sants Open Barcelona 2022, Vaibhav Suri second

Top seed of the tournament GM S L Narayanan, GM Vaibhav Suri and GM Bobby Cheng (AUS) scored 8/10 each. Narayanan won the Playoffs to win 23rd Sants International Open Barcelona 2022. Vaibhav and Bobby were placed second and third. Ten players finished at 7.5/10. Out of them IM Aronyak Ghosh, GM Lalit Rohit and IM C R G Krishna were placed fourth, sixth and eighth according to the Playoffs. The Playoff results remained the same as their initial tie-breaks for the top eight finishers. Sadhana app sponsored, Aronyak earned his maiden GM-norm.
