A whole new set of Challenges are added when you go to play an event in a foreign country! 14-year-old Kerala youngster Adithya A Chullikkad did exactly that, and he gained a total of 100 elo points in the Rilton Cup held at Stockholm, Sweden. 19-year-old Nurgyul Salimova finishes second at Bulgarian Championship 2023 in the Open section

It is rare to see female players take part in the Open section of their country's National championship.19-year-old IM Nurgyul Salimova decided to do that at Bulgarian Championship 2023. The teenager scored an impressive 6/9 and edged past two more players, GM Momchil Petkov and GM Martin Petrov, to finish second overall. She scored four wins, four draws and suffered her sole loss of the event against the top seed and eventual champion, GM Kiril Georgiev, to win a Silver. The teenager earned her first GM-norm last year when she defeated the legend, GM Nigel Short in the penultimate round. Munich GP Round 2: Tenacious Humpy shows incredible resilience

The true sign of a strong player is not just how easily they can win. It lies in the fact that how they deal with it after landing themselves in danger. Both GM Koneru Humpy and GM Anna Muzychuk found themselves in lost positions in the second round of Munich GP 2023. While Humpy blundered an exchange, Anna found herself positionally lost. The India no.1 and World no.3 fought tooth and nail to salvage a half point as she had two pawns for a rook in the endgame eventually, both sides had a minor piece each. 1st FIDE Olympiad for PwD 2023 R5: India suffers a tough loss against Poland 3-1

Poland is a very strong team. They are the top seed and currently the sole leader 10/10. They defeated India 3-1 in the penultimate round. IPCA is at sole second place 8/10, followed by four teams - Philippines, Israel, India and Hungary. India must win the last round and with the best possible game score to have medal chances. Poland needs a draw against Israel to clinch the Gold which might still not be enough for the latter to secure a medal. India faces Philippines in the final round. Subhayan Kundu dominates Madaripur Festival Deputy Commissioner Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023

Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and 6.5/7 to win Madaripur Festival Deputy Commissioner Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field in both events. CM Manon Reja Neer scored 7.5/9 and 5.5/7 to secure second and third place in Rapid and Blitz events respectively. Samrat Ghorai edged past three other players 7/9 to finish third in Rapid. FM Subrota Biswas was adjudged second in the Blitz scoring 5.5/7. The total prize fund of the Rapid event was Tk 60000 (₹45776 approx). The top three prizes were Tk 10000, 7000 and 5500 each respectively. The first prize in the Blitz event was Tk 1600.

Munich GP Round 1: Humpy makes a quiet start with Harika

The game between India's top two women, Humpy and Harika ended in a draw at Munich GP 2023. It was a hard fought battle. The first round witnessed four decisive games. GM Tan Zhongyi, GM Elisabeth Paehtz and GM Nana Dzagnidze scored convincing victories over WGM Zhu Jiner, WGM Dinara Wagner and GM Zhansaya Abdumalik respectively. Elisabeth got a better position when her opponent went wrong after thinking for nearly an hour for her sixth move. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk won a back and forth game against IM Alina Kaslinskaya. 1st FIDE Olympiad for PwD 2023 R4: India holds Hungary to a draw

India held Hungary to a draw in the fourth round of FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2023. Kishan Gangolli scored the key victory to make sure the team maintains their unbeaten streak. IM Shashikant Kutwal and Darpan Inani drew their respective games. Naveen Kumar A suffered the sole loss. Philippines lost to Poland 1.5-2.5. Thus, Poland has gained sole lead 8/8, followed by India at 7/8. India will face the tournament leader Poland in the penultimate round which will be like a virtual final. The Anish Giri Interview: Winning Tata Steel Masters 2023

Anish Giri won the Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023 ahead of all the top players in the world - Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana. He played some phenomenal chess throughout the event to win it with a rating performance of 2849, scoring 8.5/13 and gaining 16 Elo points. Anish has been very close to winning the tournament multiple times, but this is the first time he has clinched the trophy at Wijk Aan Zee! A dozen champions crowned at MPL 11th National Schools 2023

MPL 11th National School Chess Championships 2022 witnessed a participation of over 1500 players from 28 different states and union territories across the nation. Telangana and Tamil Nadu these two states bagged the maximum number of medals - seven each. However, Telangana won five Gold medals and much to everyone's surprise Tamil Nadu won none despite the host state having the maximum number of participants compared other states. Out of the twelve new champions, Mandar Lad Pradip (Goa) and Saparya Ghosh (WB) are the only two top seeds who won their respective Under-17 Open and Under-13 Girls category. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

Humpy and Harika set to battle at FIDE Women's GP in Munich

The second leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2022-23 will start in Munich, Germany from Thursday 2nd February 2023. GM Koneru Humpy and GM Harika Dronavalli will be the Indian participants in the fray. Humpy is also the highest rated player in the event. The 12-player round-robin tournament will feature GM Tan Zhongyi, GM Mariya Muzychuk, GM Anna Muzychuk, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, GM Nana Dzagnidze, GM Zhansaya Abdumalik, IM Alina Kashlinskaya, WGM Zhu Jiner, GM Elisabeth Paehtz and WGM Dinara Wagner along with the previously mentioned Humpy and Harika. India continues its great momentum at FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2023. Team India defeated the second seeded Israel convincingly 3-1. IM Shashikant Kutwal and Kishan Gangolli defeated their much higher rated opponents, GM Yehuda Gruenfeld and FM Alexey Streltsov respectively. Naveen Kumar A also scored a crucial victory against WFM Aleksandra Aleksandrova. Darpan Inani suffered the sole loss. There are three teams at a 100% score of 6/6 - India, Philippines and Poland. Prudhvi Kumar V wins Prestige Open B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2023

23-year-old Prudhvi Kumar V and Jovan Mijajlovic (SRB) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each. Prudhvi won the Prestige 2023 Open B Below 2000 Rating tournament due to better tie-breaks. It was part of Winter Chess Festival "Paracin 2023". Their fourth round encounter ended in a draw and they both finished a full point ahead of the competition. FM Dinu-Simi Suciu (ROU) scored sole 6.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was 180000 RSD (approx. ₹135914). 1st FIDE Olympiad for PwD 2023 R1-2: India makes a good start

The first edition of FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities started on 30th January 2023. India is represented by five players - Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, IM Shashikant Kutwal, Kishan Gangolli, Darpan Inani and Naveen Kumar A. Apart from Soundarya, the remaining four have scored at least one win each. India as a team won both matches. They whitewashed Panama in the first and defeated Cuba 3-1 in the second round. Internet is a wonderful place. You get to know about your favourite personalities in a deep and intimate way. On 28th of January 2023 we saw an episode of "The Long Game" released on the chess legend and 5-time chess world champion Viswanathan Anand. "The Long Game" invites sporting legends and asks them to take the viewers down the memory lane through 10 artefacts in their museum of memories in just 10 minutes. Anand's choice of 10 artefacts is amazing and it includes some amazing anecdotes on Kasparov, Kramnik, Carlsen, how he became the lightning kid and much more. One of the advice that Anand gave in the video helped IM Sagar Shah think deeply about his issue of procrastination. Check out the article.

Pranesh wins 1st ENS Rapid Rating Open 2023 and a brand new TVS Raider-125 Bike

India's 79th GM Pranesh M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 1st ENS Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. The first prize was not a conventional cash and trophy. The 16-year-old won a brand new TVS Raider-125 bike worth ₹100000. Eight players scored 8/9 each. Out of them, IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra and GM Arjun Kalyan secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The runner-ups received ₹10000 and ₹7000 each respectively. A total of 409 players including 4 GMs and 2 IMs took part in this one-day event organized by Avengers Chess Academy.
