FIDE World Championship Match 2023 officially opened

The FIDE World Championship 2023 was opened on Friday 7th April in Astana, Kazakhstan. Ian Nepomniachtchi got the white pieces at the draw of lots. He will have the color white in Game 1. The 14-game match starts on Sunday 9th April from 3 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. IST. For the first time since 2013, a World Championship match will not feature Magnus Carlsen. As the World no.1 decided to relinquish his title and not defend, we are guaranteed to get a new World Champion this month. Who do you think will win it? Ajay Karthikeyan clinches 1st RCA Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 1st RCA Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Six players - IM FT Muthaiah Al, GM Laxman R R, Lokesh N, IM Hari Madhavan N B, IM Sai Agni Jeevitesh J and IM P Saravana Krishnan scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Apart from Lokesh and Saravana, the remaining five among top seven, remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000 + trophy, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. Fagernes GM Open 2023 R7: Abhimanyu Puranik gains sole lead

GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an emphatic victory over IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) in the seventh round of Fagernes GM Open 2023. He has gained a sole lead 6/7. Four players - GM Vahap Sanal (TUR), GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM), IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen (NOR) and GM Aditya Mittal are trailing by a half point at 5.5/7 each. IM Vantika Agrawal bounced back with a victory over Shazil Shehzad (NOR). She is currently the highest scoring female player 5/7. Abhimanyu will face Tor Fredrik and Aditya will be up against Samvel in the penultimate round. IM Kushagra Mohan won the Fagernes Slow Blitz 2023. Nitish or Viani - who will win the 1st Indore International GM Open?

The penultimate round of the 1st Indore International GM Open was very intense - no less than 7 players were fighting to get the sole lead! Two players succeeded in their pursuit, while others drew their games. IM Viani D'Cunha took down the tournament top seed Levan Pantsulaia, and IM Nitish Belurkar defeated GM Boris Savchenko in the top board. As it stands right now, both Viani and Nitish have 7.5/9 points going into the final round, while 4 other players follow them with 7/9. Chakravarthi Reddy dominates CCS Chess Festival Rating Open 2023

IM Chakravarthi Reddy M scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win CCS Chess Festival Classic Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Former World Amateur Below 2000 champion, Peter Anand scored 8/9 to secure sole second position. He won eight games and lost one to IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam. 58-year-old veteran, Kiran Panditrao scored an impressive 7.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each respectively. 1st Indore International GM Open R8: Harsh, Ameya and Boris join the lead

It was an exciting 8th round in the 1st Indore International GM Open. The leaders in the top 2 boards drew their games, but it was a raging fight in the other live boards! Harsh Suresh continued to show why he's severely underrated - he defeated GM Deep Sengupta with the Black pieces, now entering joint lead with 6.5/8. Another two players who joined the lead were IM Ameya Audi and GM Boris Savchenko -they defeated IM Neelash Saha and GM Azer Mirzoev respectively. A total of 6 players share the lead now - what do you think will happen in Round 9? Saurabh Choubey wins 3rd Rangpur Rating Open 2023

Saurabh Choubey scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 to win 3rd Rangpur Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. CM Sajid Sakline Mostafa (BAN) and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan (BAN) made 5/6 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was Tk 75000. The top three prizes were Tk 13000, 10000 and 8000 each respectively. The former Madhya Pradesh State Under-25 and Rapid champion, Saurabh has won quite a few Rapid and Blitz events. However, this is his first Classical Rating tournament triumph. Fagernes GM Open 2023 R6: Samvel makes it a three-way with Vahap and Abhimanyu

GM Abhimanyu Puranik drew with IM Koustav Chatterjee in the sixth round of Fagernes GM Open 2023. GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM) handed IM Vantika Agrawal her first loss of the event. Abhimanyu, Samvel and GM Vahap Sanal (TUR) are currently in a three-way lead 5/6. Top seed of the tournament, GM Sethuraman S P defeated GM Kaido Kulaots (EST) to take his score 4.5/6. Eight players including three Indians are at 4.5/6 each. They are - GM Aditya Mittal, IM Koustav and GM Sethuraman. WGM Nandhidhaa P V scored a fine victory over IM Sammed Shete. She is now at 4/6. Harika speaks up about the New Delhi GP incidents

GM Harika Dronavalli is currently India no.2 and World no.11 among Women. She is the second Indian woman to achieve the Grandmaster title. Harika has won countless accolades throughout her career. At the conclusion of FIDE New Delhi GP, she finally decided to speak up about what happened before the start of the tournament. Nils Grandelius triumphs at Reykjavik Open 2023, Abhijeet Gupta third

GM Nils Grandelius defeated IM Quentin Loiseau in the final round to win Reykjavik Open 2023. The Sweden no.1 scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win the tournament on his eleventh attempt. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Seven players scored 7/9. Out of them, Turkey no.1 GM Mustafa Yilmaz and GM Abhijeet Gupta were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Abhijeet defeated GM Kjetil A Lie in the final round to finish third and gained a valuable 10 Elo rating points. In a 10-round swiss event, usually a clear leader emerges by around Round 5 or 6. Well, that is not happening at the 1st Indore International GM Open! After completing 7 rounds, a total of 4 players share joint lead with 6/7 - IM Nitish Belurkar, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. No less than 9 players are breathing on their neck with 5.5/7! GM Abhimanyu Puranik had a well contested draw against GM Vahap Sanal in the fifth round of Fagernes GM Open 2023. They both are sharing the lead with a 4.5/6 each. They are followed by eight players including three Indians - IM Vantika Agrawal, IM Koustav Chatterjee and GM Aditya Mittal at 4/6 each. Abhimanyu ended WIM Savitha Shri B's winning streak. Aleksandra Goryachkina wins New Delhi GP on tie-breaks

GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva and WGM Zhu Jiner - all three drew their respective final round games. They each finished with a 6/10 score. Goryachkina won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining two were placed second and third respectively. Bibisara scored her second GM-norm and Jiner earned her final GM-norm. She also crossed 2500 as she gained 17.6 Elo rating points, taking her live rating to 2506.6. Thus, Zhu Jiner becomes China's latest Grandmaster. She has earned a GM-norm in all three events she has participated at FIDE GP 2022-23. Currently, she is leading the GP. WIM Savitha Shri B continues her fantastic form at Fagernes GM Open 2023. She defeated IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) in the second round where she made a unique rook lift in the Sicilian. IM Vantika Agrawal drew against GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LTU). Sanket Chakravarty beat his second consecutive IM of the event. This time he defeated IM Jonas Hacker (GER). FM Tanmay Chopra held IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen (NOR) to a draw. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Vahap Sanal (TUR), IM Koustav, WIM Savitha and Sanket are the five players to have won all three of their games.
