Ferenc Berkes wins 2nd Rigo Janos Memorial Open 2023, Harsh Suresh second

GM Ferenc Berkes (HUN), FM Harsh Suresh and GM Valeriy Aveskulov (UKR) scored 7.5/9 each at 2nd Rigo Janos Memorial Open 2023. Ferenc won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Harsh and Aveskulov were placed second and third. Top three remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was HUF 1275000 (€3187). The top three prizes in the Open was HUF 300000 (€750) + cup, medal and certificate , HUF 200000 (€500) and HUF 150000 (€375) each respectively. India bags nine medals at 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Championships 2023

India won a total of nine medals at 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships 2023. 52-year-old Anjali Sagar secured the maximum number of medals - four in Senior 50 category. She earned Gold in Rapid, Silver in Standard, Gold in Blitz Women and Bronze in Blitz Open. One of the latest WIMs of India, Saina Salonika scored 5/7 to secure Silver in Under-20 Girls Rapid. Bhavik Ahuja scored 6.5/9 to clinch Gold in Under-16 Open Blitz. Amulya Guruprasad, Cera Dagariya and Siya Sagar won team medals for India in the Under-16 Girls category. Integral Coach Factory dominates 35th All India Railway Team Championship 2023

Integral Coach Factory scored an unbeaten 10/12 to win 35th All India Inter Railway Team Chess Championship 2023. ICF defeated the eventual runner-up Eastern Railway convincingly 1-3 in the fourth round. ER scored 9/12 to finish sole second. Metro Railway Kolkata and the defending champion Southern Railway scored 8/12 each. However, Metro edged past SR on tie-breaks to finish third. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy was the top scorer for his team ICF. He scored an unbeaten 5/6. GM Visakh N R and IM P Shyam Nikhil also remained undefeated. They made 4.5/6 and 4/6 each. Padmini Rout becomes five times National Women champion by convincingly clinching the 49th edition

IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) defeated the defending champion IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) convincingly to become 49th National Women 2023 champion. Despite suffering a loss against the eventual tenth place finisher, WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP), Padmini bounced back by scoring 6/7 in the next seven games. Apart from her own performance of 9/11, her championship was secured thanks to WIM Isha Sharma's (KAR) resilience against WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB). Mary was winning the better part of the endgame. However, she missed all her opportunities and could only manage a draw. Thus, missing the first place and had to settle with the runner-up scoring 8.5/11. Pier Luigi Basso wins 14th Forni di Sopra Dolomites Open 2023, Deepan Chakkravarthy third

GM Pier Luigi Basso (ITA), GM Vladislav Nevednichy (ROU) and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored 7/9 each at 14th Dolomites International Open A (>1899) 2023. Pier won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Nevednichy and Deepan were placed second and third. Top three remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was €5500. The top three prizes in the Open A was €1500, €900 and €600 along with a trophy each respectively. IM Nitin S and Kunal M are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 5.5/9 to secure eighth and tenth place respectively. After this event, Deepan went on to win 35th All India Inter Railway Team Championship 2023 for his team Integral Coach Factory.

Magnus Carlsen conquers SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023 with three rounds to spare, Gukesh impresses

Magnus Carlsen won SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023 with three rounds to spare. Fabiano Caruana halted Magnus Carlsen's eleven-game winning streak at this event. The first GCT event winner of this season, drew against the World no.1 in Round 10, the first round of Blitz on the final day. Carlsen scored 26/36 to win this event. After winning it in Round 15, he lost the next two games consecutively against Alireza Firouzja and Richard Rapport. Ian Nepomniachtchi finished second 22.5/36, followed by Firouzja third 22/36. D Gukesh had an impressive Grand Chess Tour as he scored 19.5/36 to finish fifth overall. On the final day, he defeated Rapport, Caruana, Vishy Anand, Constantin Lupulescu, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Ivan Saric, before finishing with a draw against Nepomniachtchi. 49th National Women 2023 is poised for an exciting finish

WIM Mahalakshmi M (TN) held IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) to a draw. It threw the 49th National Women Championship 2023 wide open. PSPB's IM Padmini Rout and WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) to join Bhakti in a three-way lead to the finish 8/10 each. The defending champion, IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) defeated Sarayu Velpula (TEL) to get herself back in the championship contention. Four players - Mahalakshmi, Divya, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) and WIM Isha Sharma (KAR) are at 7.5/10 each. Divya has an outside chance to win the event for the third year in-a-row. 13-year-old Ojasya Saxena (UP) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Summer Cup Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Sujeet Kumar Chaudhari (UP) and Pallav Maheshwari (RAJ) scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1500000. The top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹71000 and ₹41000 along with a trophy each respectively. There were three prizes worth ₹100000 and above. Magnus Carlsen did something which will be very difficult for anyone to repeat including himself as he mentioned. The world no.1 won all nine of his games on the first day of Blitz at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023. The Norwegian has made many records in his career but to win all nine games of Blitz in a day, is something he had never done before. This performance propelled him to the top of the leaderboard 20/27. Previous day leaders, Fabiano Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi are at 17/27 each. Vishy Anand and D Gukesh had a tough day. The top six boards ended in draws. IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) had the same result as their last rated game encounter over seven years. Bhakti maintains her sole lead 7.5/9. Five players are trailing her by a half point. They are - WGM Srija Seshadri (TN), WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB), WIM Mahalakshmi M (TN), WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB). Mrudul had a great opportunity to go for a win against Mary. Unfortunately for her, she could not find it. The reigning Telangana State Women champion, Sarayu Velpula is having a fantastic tournament. She drew against WGM Swati Ghate (LIC) to remain undefeated at 6.5/9. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete (MAH) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Nipani Grand Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shriraj Bhosale (MAH), IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam (TN) and Saurish Kashelkar (MAH) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Sammed's sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, Balasubramaniam. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹21001, ₹12506 and ₹10004 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was organized in memory of Late Sou Ratanbai Bhaichand Shah, Akkolkar on 17th to 18th June 2023 at Sri Venkatesh Mandir, Nipani in Belgaum, Karnataka. SuperUnited R&B 2023 Day 3: Gukesh beats Anand in their first-ever tournament face off

Vishy Anand started the third day of SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023 with a draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Then he was paired against his WACA mentee, D Gukesh. In their first-ever tournament battle, Gukesh prevailed. The teenager might have lost his previous round game against Fabiano Caruana, however, he showed a lot of promise. The world no.13 took his chances but unfortunately could not follow through. Against the maestro, he played fantastic and got a dominating position. Once the legend erred in an already difficult position, Gukesh seized his opportunity and won. He finished the day with a solid draw against Duda in their first-ever rated Rapid game. IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) got a few good opportunities to extend her lead in the eighth round of 49th National Women Chess Championship 2023. It has been over a decade since Bhakti defeated WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) in a rated game. She had a few chances in the endgame, unfortunately for her, she could not seize them. The only other pursuer, WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) held IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to a solid draw. It allowed WGM Srija Seshadri (TN), WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) to reduce the gap with the leader 6.5/8. It will be Padmini vs Bhakti on the top board in Round 9 which starts today at 10 a.m. IST.

Supratim Ghosh dominates 14th KIIT International Chess Festival C Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

Supratim Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 14th KIIT International Chess Festival C Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Divyanshu Kumar Singh and Gaurav Sharma scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Divyanshu's sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion, Supratim. The total prize fund of the entire festival combining three events was ₹3200000, for Category C it was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹40000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 15th to 18th June 2023 at KIIT Campus 9, Patia in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
