Iniyan wins 27th Creon Open 2023, Bharath Subramaniyam second

GM Iniyan P and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each at 27th Creon Open Main (>1600) 2023. Iniyan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Bharath was placed second. The sixth round battle between them ended in a draw. French IMs Joseph Girel and Floryan Eugene scored 7/9 each. They were adjudged third and fourth. GM Sayantan Das is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to secure fifth place. The top three prizes were €2000 + trophy, €1100 and €750 each respectively. This is Iniyan's second triumph in France this year after he won the 8th Noisiel Open in February this year. Anurag Jaiswal convincingly clinches Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Jharkhand

Anurag Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Jharkhand. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Eight players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, 10-year-old Adhiraj Mitra and Akshat Negi were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The winner Anurag defeated the eventual runner-up, Adhiraj in the final round to become a clear champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹75000 + trophies. Top three prizes were ₹15000 + trophy, ₹10000 and ₹7000. The tournament was held from 5th to 9th August 2023 at St. Xavier’s Welfare Center in Chaibasa, Jharkhand. It was organized by West Singhbhum District Chess Association. This was Anurag's first rating tournament triumph in almost four years. India's strongest tournament - Tata Steel Chess India 2023 starts earlier this year

Tata Steel Chess India is the strongest Rapid and Blitz tournament to take place in India. Usually, it takes place between September and December. However, due to the calendar being packed with a series of tournaments, this time it starts tomorrow, Thursday 31st August. That's not all. The tournament will last for ten days - 31st August to 4th September for Women and 5th to 9th September for Men. Just like last year, both men and women's section will have equal prize fund of US$ 41500. The five-day Rapid and Blitz tournament will feature 22 of the world's best including India's top players. Harikrishnan dominates 20th Pays de Charleroi Classical and Blitz Rating Open 2023, Muthaiah second

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 20th Pays de Charleroi Open Group A (>=1900) 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM FT Muthaiah Al scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. GM Normunds Miezis (LAT) edged past three other players to finish third 6.5/9. The total prize fund was US$ 6000. The top three prizes were €900 + trophy, €600 and €400 each respectively. In the Blitz event, Harikrishnan scored an astounding 11/11 to win the tournament. He finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field. Muthaiah once again claimed the second position scoring 9.5/11. FM Natan Pirard (BEL) finished third 8/11. The top two prizes in the Blitz were €80 and €55 each respectively.

WR Chess clinches FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 with a round to spare, Freedom second and MGD1 third

WR Chess won FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2023 when they defeated ASV AlphaEchecs Linz 5-1 in the penultimate round. Before that, Armenia held them to a 3-3 draw in Round 10. In the final round, the eventual winner, WR Chess drew against Berlin Chess Federation 3-3, as the outcome of it would not have changed their final rank. They finished with a score of 22/24. Düsseldorfer Schachklub 1914/25 e.V. lost to Freedom 1.5-4.5 in the final round. Thus, Freedom finish second 20/24. Chess Pensioners lost to MGD1 2-4. MGD1 secured Bronze 18/24. Pentala Harikrishna (Bronze), Vidit Gujrathi (Silver), Raunak Sadhwani (Silver), Pranesh M (Bronze), Harika Dronavalli (Silver) and Peter Anand A (Silver) are the individual medal winners for their respective boards. Azumi Sakai and Hiroshi Manabe are Japan Women and Senior Champions 2023

We are already into the eighth month of 2023, a year that has seemingly just breezed by. Right at the end of July, we saw new champions added to the list, as Japan Women’s Chess Championship and Japan’s Senior Chess Championship came to a close. Both tournaments were conducted over two days - 29th and 30th July at Shinagawa-ku Kumin hall called ‘Curian’. Each followed the six round Swiss-league, 45 minutes + 30 secs from move no.1, Japan National Rated format. The top two finishers of both tournaments would earn an invite to Japan Chess Championship 2024, and the respective “Champion” title will be accorded only to the highest finishing players registered under Japan Federation. The top two boards in each of the tournaments played on DGT boards. The games were broadcast live on Japan Chess Federation’s youtube channel, and one could follow the moves on chess.com and Lichess. Dinesh Rajan M and Sham R scored 8/9 at 29th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Open B (<2000) Rating Tournament 2023. Dinesh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sham was placed second. Dinesh suffered one loss against Feliks Tokhyan (ARM). Sham remained undefeated. WIM Tejaswini Sagar and Anusweud Sasikumar scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed fourth and sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. Top seed WFM Anusha N L V scored 7/10 to secure tenth place. Total prize fund was US$ 6050. FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 R5-8: WR Chess increases their sole lead, Praggnanandhaa wins four in-a-row

After resting the first day, R Praggnanandhaa continued where he left off at the FIDE World Cup 2023. The sensational teenager scored four wins in-a-row for WR Chess at FIDE World Rapid Teams 2023. He defeated GMs Evgeniy Najer (Freedom), Raunak Sadhwani (MGD1), Rasmus Svane (Germany and Friends) and Sebastian Siebrecht (Kompetenzakademie Allstars). Vishy Anand is undefeated so far. He contributed 5/7 for his team Freedom which is currently at second place 13/16. MGD1, Ashdod Elit Chess Club and Six-pack are at 11/16 each. GM D Gukesh (Kompetenzakademie Allstars) defeated GM Vladimir Kramnik (Chess Pensioners) in their first-ever over-the-board rated game. Max Warmerdam dominates Dutch Open 2023, Prraneeth Vuppala second, Sidhant Mohapatra third

GM Max Warmerdam scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Dutch Open 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half point ahead of the field. GM Prraneeth Vuppala scored sole 6.5/9 to finish second. Six players scored 6/9. IM Sidhant Mohapatra and GM Sankalp Gupta were the only two Indians among them. Sidhant was placed third and Sankalp sixth. The champion Warmerdam, won against both remaining podium finishers Prraneeth and Sidhant. Sethuraman convincingly clinches 60th National Championship 2023

GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) drew against GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) to become 60th National Chess 2023 Champion. This is his second National title since 2014. He finished a half point ahead of the competition 9.5/11. GM Vishnu Prasanna V (TN) defeated GM Abhimanyu Puranik (AAI) to secure sole second place 9/11. Seven players scored 8.5/11. Out of them, IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) secured third place. He drew against GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) to make a podium finish. The only other IM to make a top ten finish is, IM Neelash Saha (RSPB). FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 R1-4: Aravindh and Nihal shine

India's first triple crown champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram (Six-pack) had the best start among Indians. He defeated GM Wesley So (WR Chess) and GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (ASV AlphaEchecs Linz) in Round 2 and 4 respectively. In both games, Aravindh played some sharp chess, the latter win being his best so far at FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2023. GM Nihal Sarin (MGD1) also had a great day as he defeated GM Levon Aronian (Kompetenzakademie Allstars) and drew against GM Daniil Dubov (Freedom). GM Raunak Sadhwani (MGD1) won against GM Richard Rapport (Freedom) which featured four pawn promotions into a queen. Among the Women, WGM Priyanka Nutakki (Six-pack) held GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (WR Chess) to a draw. She was on the verge of holding GM Kateryna Lagno (ASV AlphaEchecs Linz) until she blundered at the last moment. This man has built a chess arena inside a park in Meghalaya- IAS Swapnil Tembe

He is an IAS officer and is the current Director of School Education in Meghalaya. Meet Swapnil Tembe, who found chess to be an ideal tool to inculcate in school kids the virtues of concentration, patience, analytical thinking, and decision-making. This is the reason why he decided to build a chess arena in a park in Tura, West Garo Hills. Sagar Shah had an interview with Swapnil. Vladimir Fedoseev wins 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023, Aravindh Chithambaram third

The top three boards ended in draws in the final round of 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023. Both GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) and GM Xiangyu Xu (CHN) scored 7/9 each. Fedoseev won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Xiangyu was placed second. Eight players including GM Aravindh Chithambaram and GM S L Narayanan scored 6.5/9 each. Aravindh was placed and Narayanan ninth. Total prize fund was US$ 41600. The top three prizes were US$ 15000 + trophy, $10000 and $6000 each respectively. The inaugural edition of FIDE World Rapid Team Championship is starting today in Dusseldorf, Germany. A total of 19 Indians are going to take part, third after Germany 115 and Ukraine 22. Vishy Anand, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, R Praggnanandhaa, Pentala Harikrishna, D Gukesh, Raunak Sadhwani, Aravindh Chithambaram, Srinath Narayanan, Harika Dronavalli, Pranesh M, Aditya Mittal, Karthik Venkataraman, Nubairshah Shaikh, Priyanka Nutakki, Dinesh Rajan M, Peter Anand and Vibhor Sharma will representing their respective teams. A total of 295 players in 37 teams are slated to take part. The total prize fund is €250000. The top three prizes are €100000, 60000 and 40000 each respectively.
