Gunning to be the first WGM of Bihar - Marium Fatima

Every single person has the potential to change the course of history and bring about the necessary development in and around the place they live. This is the story of one such girl from Bihar who has made a name for herself in the chess community and is soaring to new heights. The chess culture in Bihar was almost negligible a few years ago and is growing now. One player who is doing very well in the last few years is the very talented 17-year-old Marium Fatima. Everyone in Bihar knows her and is proud of her, and it is not an exaggeration to say that she can be the first WGM from Bihar. For all those who are not aware of her, this article is the perfect opportunity to get to know her and understand why we think so highly about her talent. Subhayan Kundu dominates Hetauda Cup Asian Open 2023, Arvinder Preet third

Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Hetauda Cup Asian Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin (BAN) and FM Arvinder Preet Singh scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively as Minhaz got the better of Arvinder in the fourth round. It helped his tie-break score. Marium Fatima became the sole female player to make a top ten finish. She scored 6.5/9 to be placed tenth. The total prize fund of the tournament was Nepalese Rupees 587500. The top three prizes were NRs 125000, 75000 and 40000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Subhayan's fifth tournament triumph of the year. D Gukesh was cruising towards victory against Jules Moussard (FRA) until he made a huge blunder. It cost the teenager the game. Jules is a very strong player. He does not miss these tactical opportunities. Michael Adams (ENG) drew against Nikita Vitiugov (ENG) to emerge sole leader 3/4. He is followed by Gukesh, Jules and Hans Niemann (USA) at 2.5/3 each. Alef Super Stars 2023 Rapid R1-3: Yangyi extends his lead, Nihal struggles

Nihal Sarin had a tough start in the Rapid segment of Alef Super Stars 2023. He drew the first game against Salem Saleh (UAE). Then he lost the next two games against Yangyi Yu (CHN) and Sanan Sjugirov (HUN). The China no.3 increased his lead. He is now nine points ahead of Nihal. Salem had a great day to get himself closer. Yangyi extends his sole lead 34/48, Nihal is still at second place 23/48, followed closely by Sanan 22/48 and Salem reduced the gap 17/48. Three more rounds of Rapid games will be played today. Pradeep Kumar R A wins 2nd HDCA Rating Open 2023

Pradeep Kumar R A and Arghya Sen scored 8/9 each at 2nd HDCA Rating Open 2023. Pradeep won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Arghya secured second place. Arpan Das, Kumar Gaurav, Nigash G, Jyotshnav Talukdar and Shrihan Sabat scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh respectively. Pradeep, Gaurav and Pradip Ghosh remained undefeated among the top ten finishers. Marium Fatima became the sole female player to finish in top ten. She scored 7/9 to be placed ninth. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹416000. The top three prizes were ₹75000 + trophy, ₹50000 and ₹30000 each. This was Pradeep's third tournament triumph of the year. 13th London Chess Classic 2023 R3: Gukesh stuns Volokitin

GM D Gukesh scored an outstanding victory against GM Andrei Volokitin (UKR) in the third round of 13th London Chess Classic 2023. The teenager's twelfth move g4 followed by Nh3 took his opponent by surprise. Later on, he launched a devastating attack on the kingside and won the game. GM Michael Adams (ENG) defeated GM Mateusz Bartel (POL) to stay in the lead with Gukesh 2.5/3. GM Jules Moussard (FRA) got the better of GM Nikita Vitugov (ENG). England's prodigy IM Shreyas Royal scored a big victory against the Iran no.2 GM M Amin Tabatabaei. Gukesh will face Jules in the next round. Round 4 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Alef Super Stars 2023 R6: Yangyi tops the Classical segment, Nihal in pursuit

Nihal Sarin had a tepid draw against Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) in the sixth round of Alef Super Stars 2023. Thus, Nihal remains undefeated in the Classical segment. Salem Saleh (UAE) and Yangyi Yu (CHN) had an exciting draw. At one point, it seemed like Yangyi can go for a win. However, he decided to repeat moves as the position was very sharp. Yangyi topped the Classical segment of the tournament 24/36, Nihal is close behind 21/36, followed by Sanan 18/36 and Salem 9/36. Three rounds of Rapid games will be played today. 13th London Chess Classic 2023 R2: Gukesh survives a scare against Vitiugov

GM D Gukesh seemed to be cruising towards a draw against GM Nikita Vitiugov in the second round until he misplayed. It gave the England no.1 great winning chances. However, he could not manage to seize his advantage, allowing the teenager to escape with a draw. GM Andrei Volokitin (UKR), GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) and GM Mateusz Bartel (POL) scored victories against IM Shreyas Royal (ENG), GM Luke McShane (ENG) and GM Jules Moussard (ENG) respectively. Currently, Gukesh, Adams and Volokitin are at 1.5/2 each, followed by four players at 1/2 and three at 0.5/2 each. Gukesh faces Volokitin in the third round. Alef Super Stars 2023 R5: Gritty Nihal draws a 101-move long battle against Yangyi

Nihal Sarin activated his defense mode in the fifth round of Alef Super Stars 2023. After sacrificing an exchange on 32nd move, the teenager had to showcase his defensive skills against the China no.3, Yangyi Yu for 68 moves to secure a half point. The 101-move long draw is the longest game of the event so far. The boy showed that he is capable of playing a long game after a ten move draw in the previous round. Sanan Sjugirov scored his first win of the event against the UAE no.1 - Salem Saleh. It was a clinical victory for the Hungary no.1. An Open Rapid tournament on the day of ICC World Cup 2023 Final

Organizing a chess tournament on the day of ICC World Cup 2023 Final is a bold move. A general reaction would be, not a lot of people will turn up to play chess. A total of 276 players including four IMs and a WIM, out of 280 registered, changed that notion. North 24 Parganas District Chess Association decided to organize a chess tournament at City Centre New Town mall. A total prize fund of ₹82600 was up for grabs. It goes without saying that it was a resounding success. Every year, a mall in Austria hosts a Rapid and Blitz Rating Open tournaments where strong players all around the world participate. The way chess is evolving and making progress, maybe that day is not far that chess tournaments regularly take place at a spectator friendly venue and noise is no longer an issue, just like the widely followed outdoor sports. Ding Liren won the World Chess Championship 2023 and became the 17th World Champion. It's been 200 days since the last game of chess that he has played publicly. The question on everyone's mind is - Where is Ding Liren and what is he up to? There have been very few interviews where the Chinese GM has given his thoughts on the match and the moves that he has played. During his period of being away from the world of chess, IM Sagar Shah managed to get in touch with him and did this interview. Ding speaks about the match with Nepo, his thoughts, life after match and more. 

Vaishali R becomes the third Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title

IM Vaishali R became the third Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title on Friday 1st December 2023. She also became Inda's 84th Grandmaster by scoring a win against FM Tamer Tarik Selbes at 4th Elllobregat Open 2023. India got its first female player as a Grandmaster in the form of Koneru Humpy back in 2002. Nine years later, Harika Dronavalli became the second Indian woman to earn the GM title. Now in 2023, twelve years later, Vaishali ended the search for the third Indian woman to earn the coveted GM title. The Chennai woman had an illustrious career so far, the GM title certainly cements her among the world's best. There are only 41 female players who have a GM title as FIDE Rating list December 2023. D Gukesh started his 13th London Chess Classic 2023 with a victory over Poland no.3, GM Mateusz Bartel. The India no.5 outplayed the Pole, after the latter misplaced his knight at b6. Gukesh beautifully utilized it to his advantage and had no trouble converting it into a victory. The newly crowned World Senior 50+ champion - GM Michael Adams (ENG) was the only other victor of the first round. He defeated the Iran no.2 GM M Amin Tabatabaei. Gukesh will face the new England no.1, GM Nikita Vitiugov in the second round. It starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Alexei Fedorov dominates 7th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Sai second and Arjun Adireddy third

GM Alexei Fedorov scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 7th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half points ahead of the competition. Sai Vishwesh C and Arjun Adireddy scored 6/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively. Sai defeated Arjun in the third round. That helped him secure the second place. Nimmy A G becomes Kerala's first Woman International Master

Nimmy A G became Kerala's first Woman International Master in May 2023. She earned her first WIM-norm in 2006 and fulfilled all requirements by June 2012. However, all her norms occurring in India delayed the inevitable. After scoring four norms in India, Nimmy traveled to Budapest, Hungary this year when she earned her final norm to earn the WIM title. While pursuing for the WIM title, she became an Assistant Professor at a college, became a PhD in Commerce during that time. Nimmy's fortitude shows that if you want something truly, you can balance and overcome any obstacle that is in your way. The determination and perseverance is the key to etch your name in history.
