Tata Steel 2024 R8: Firouzja fabulous against Ding Liren, joins the lead with Gukesh and Giri

Alireza Firouzja (FRA) scored a fantastic win against Ding Liren (CHN) in Round 8 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. The world no.6 sacrificed an exchange after which the world champion blundered. His opponent proclaimed that it is a dangerous line for Black and he had to know a lot to defend. Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the only other win in the Masters against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi drew against Max Warmerdam (NED), Wenjun Ju (CHN) and Alexander Donchenko (GER) respectively. Gukesh, Anish Giri (NED) and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) are currently the three leaders at 5/8 each. Leon Luke Mendonca swindled Anton Korobov (UKR) to move to 5/8. Marc' Andria Maurizzi (FRA) is the new sole leader 5.5/8 after he defeated the previous one - Salem Saleh (UAE). Today is a rest day. Neelash Saha dominates 2nd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024

IM Neelash Saha scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Kartavya Anadkat, Om Batra and Suraj Dahiya scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Neelash drew against the eventual runner-up Kartavya and defeated the second runner-up Om Batra. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹800000. The top three prizes were ₹101000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is the first tournament Neelash played in 2024 and he won it. Currently, he is sharing the lead with GM Pranav Anand at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R4: Neelash Saha makes a quick work of Nigel Short, co-leads with Pranav Anand

IM Neelash Saha made a short work of GM Nigel Short (ENG) in the fourth round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. His strategy of avoiding a lot of theory worked against the legend of the sport. Local boy, GM Pranav Anand defeated IM Sammed Shete by sacrificing a piece, to join the lead with Neelash. IM Nitish Belurkar held GM Alexei Fedorov to a draw. GM Laxman R R suffered a tough loss against GM Abhijeet Gupta. He missed a precise continuation in a same color bishop endgame which ideally should have been a draw. GM Neelotpal Das had a 134-move long grueling draw against his childhood friend, GM Sandipan Chanda. Pushkar Dere maintains his good form. He defeated IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) to move to 3.5/4. Vidit Gujrathi scored his first win at 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). After six draws, Vidit seized his opportunity by doing a king walk, something he has done twice before at Wijk aan Zee. D Gukesh scored his third consecutive win. He completed his hat-trick by winning against Max Warmerdam (NED). Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated Anish Giri (NED) to join him and Gukesh in a three-way lead 4.5/7. R Praggnanandhaa drew against Jorden van Foreest (NED). Vidit and Praggnananadhaa are at 4/7 each. IM Divya Deshmukh registered a victory against GM Liam Vrolijk (NED). Leon Luke Mendonca bounced back by scoring a full point against IM Stefan Beukema (BEL). Igor Janik clinches 34th Cracovia Blitz Open 2023, Anwesh Upadhyaya second

GM Igor Janik (POL) scored 9.5/11 to win 34th Cracovia Blitz Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya, FM Franciszek Sernecki (POL) and Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored 9/11 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. IM Bhakti Kulkarni scored 8/11 to finish 13th. She won the first prize in Women category. The top three prizes were 1000, 800 and 600 PLN. The tournament took place on the first day of 2024. 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R2-3: Nigel Short and six more perfect at 3/3

The legend GM Nigel Short (ENG) is known not to prefer playing double rounds in a Classical tournament. It will be difficult to recall when was the last time he did that. However, on the second day of 1st Bangalore GM 2024, he played and won both games in Round 2 and 3. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Neelash Saha, GM Alexei Fedorov, GM Pranav Anand, IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete and IM Nitish Belurkar are the remaining five players at 3/3. Bangalore's very own, Pranav won an exciting battle against GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in the third round. Boris Savchenko wins 2nd Indore GM Open 2024, Ratnakaran third

GM Boris Savchenko scored 8.5/10 to win 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. GM Alexei Fedorov scored 8/10 to secure second place. IM Ratnakaran K, IM Neelash Saha and FM Goutham Krishna H made 7.5/10 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth according to tie-breaks. Goutham earned his final IM-norm at this event. He just needs to fulfil the rating requirements to become India's next International Master. IM Ameya Audi, Saurabh Anand and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo are the remaining three Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 7/10 each and were placed seventh, ninth and tenth respectively. D Gukesh scored his second consecutive win at 86th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2024. The teenager felt he surprised his opponent with Qf6 in reply to the Netherlands no.2's choice of Scotch opening. In a chaotic position, Jorden blundered a pawn and Gukesh does not let these opportunities slip by. R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi drew against Ian Nepomniachtchi and Wenjun Ju (CHN) respectively. GM Harika Dronavalli bounced back with a victory against IM Stefan Beukema (BEL). IM Eline Roebers (NED) won against the second seeded GM Mustafa Yilmaz (TUR). 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R1: Vinay Kumar outplays Sankalp Gupta

FM Vinay Kumar Matta scored the biggest upset of the first round at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. Vinay completely outplayed Sankalp after getting a commanding position. WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty also scored a big win against GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY). The newly crowned Caplin Hastings Masters 2023-24 winner, GM Abhijeet Gupta is the top seed. The 007 of chess, GM Nigel Short (ENG), the legend is the second seed. Raghav V held the reigning National champion GM Sethuraman to a draw. A total of 207 players including 31 GMs, 40 IMs, 4 WGMs and 10 WIMs are taking part from 16 countries across the world in Open A. The total prize fund combining three categories is ₹5000000, ₹2500000 in Category A. The top three prizes are ₹450000, ₹350000 and ₹250000 along with a trophy each. Tata Steel 2024 R5: Gukesh bounces back with a statement victory over Nepomniachtchi

After suffering two losses in-a-row, it was time for D Gukesh to make a comeback. He did it against the two-time World Championship Challenger, Ian Nepomniachtchi in the fifth round of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. Gukesh seized his opportunity when his opponent made a tactical mistake. Reigning four-time Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Alireza Firouzja (FRA), beating her highest rated opponent she ever faced. Lowest rated in the Challengers section, IM Eline Roebers (NED) defeated the top seed, GM Hans Niemann (USA) emphatically, after suffering four losses consecutively. It will be Nepomniachtchi v Praggnanandhaa, Jorden van Foreest v Gukesh, Wenjun v Vidit, Liam Vrolijk Leon, IM Stefan Beukema v GM Harika and GM Salem v IM Divya in Round 6. Abhijeet Gupta clinches Caplin Hastings Masters 2023-24

GM Abhijeet Gupta scored 7.5/9 to win Caplin Hastings Masters 2023. He finished the tournament a half point ahead of the competition. GM Pengxiang Zhang (CHN) scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. Nine players including GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA) scored 6.5/9 each. They shared third place. Former multi-time Hastings Masters winner, GM Deep Sengupta was one of them. The total prize fund of the tournament was over £20000. The top three prizes were £2500 + trophy, £1750 and £1250 each respectively. This was Abhijeet's third triumph of 2023 and can also be considered his first tournament victory of 2024 as the tournament finished on 5th January 2024. Himal Gusain victorious at 16th Marseille International Festival 2023

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 16th Marseille International Festival 2023 Open A (>1500). He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Guillaume Lamard (FRA) and IM Guillaume Philippe (FRA) scored 7/9 each to secure second and third place respectively. Himal drew against both runners-up in the seventh and eighth round respectively. The total prize fund of the festival was €7000. The top three prizes were €1200 + trophy, €800 and €600 each respectively. This is Himal's seventh tournament triumph of the year, third in France. Srihari L R superb at 14th Chennai GM Open 2023, Aakash G third

IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win 14th Chennai GM Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE), Aakash G, GM Boris Savchenko and GM Evgeniy Podolchenko scored 8/10 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. 13-year-old Aakash delivered a stellar performance. He is the sole untitled finisher among top ten. The teenager's performance earned him 188.4 Elo rating points. GM Laxman R R is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7.5/10 to finish seventh. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹2000000. Tata Steel 2024 R4: Praggnanandhaa beats Ding Liren second year in-a-row, becomes the new India no.1

R Praggnanandhaa scored an emphatic victory against the reigning world champion Ding Liren in the fourth round of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. Praggnanandhaa managed to win against Ding Liren for the second consecutive year at the same event, round and also color. He is now India no.1 in live ratings. After Vishy Anand, he becomes the second Indian to beat a reigning world champion in a Classical rated game. Gukesh lost to Anish Giri in a long endgame grind. This win propelled Giri to sole lead. Vidit Gujrathi drew against Jorden van Foreest comfortably. Leon Luke Mendonca lost against Erwin L'Ami from a promising position. Today is the first of three rest days. Round 5 pairings: Vidit v Max Warmerdam, Gukesh v Ian Nepomniachtchi, Praggnanandhaa v Giri, IM Divya Deshmukh v GM Mustafa Yilmaz and Harika Dronavalli v Leon.
