Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Vincent Keymer and co. set to clash at GRENKE Chess Classic 2024 starting today

GRENKE Chess Classic is back after nearly five years. The winner of 2019 edition, Magnus Carlsen (NOR) will return to defend his title. He will be joined by the reigning World Champion - Ding Liren (CHN), Germany no.1 and World no.18 Vincent Keymer, World Blitz 2021 champion - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Romania no.1 and World no.27 - Richard Rapport and GRENKE Chess Open 2019 winner - Daniel Fridman (GER). Fridman's nearly five years wait will be over. Over 2750 players have registered in the Open section. Arjun Erigaisi will be the top seed, followed by European 2023 champion - Alexey Sarana (SRB). Registration is still on. Round 1 in Open starts on 28th March at 6:30 p.m. local time, 11 p.m. IST. Classic Round 1 and 2 will be played today from 3 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Yoshiyaki Yokota wins Osaka Chess Championship 2024

Mayur Gondhalekar and his good friend, Sheldon Donaldson regularly keeps us updated about the Japan chess scene. Sheldon writes a blog about his experience playing at Osaka Chess Championship 2024. The Canadian origin, currently residing in Japan, Sheldon's article is full of high quality photos and some interesting moments from his games. Mary Ann clinches Velammal AICF WGM 2024 with a round to spare

WGM Mary Ann Gomes won Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024 when she drew against WGM Nino Maisuradze (FRA) in Round 10. The remaining four games ending in draws meant no other player has a mathematical chance to catch up with her. Mary had an opportunity to gain material and win against Nino. However, she missed and the game ended in a draw. IM Elena Sedina (ITA) needed to call her opponent WIM Angela Franco Valencia's (COL) bluff when she offered her rook as a sacrifice. Neelash Saha wins Bijnor Open Vol.2 2024

IM Neelash Saha, Vignesh B, GM Laxman R R and Balkishan A scored 7.5/9 each at Bijnor Open UP Booster Series Vol.2 2024. Neelash won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Vignesh, Laxman and Balkishan were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Only Neelash and Laxman remained undefeated among them. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day rating tournament was organized by and at Vivek College, Bijnor at Uttar Pradesh from 17th to 21st March 2024. Mary Ann on the verge of winning Velammal AICF WGM 2024

WGM Mary Ann Gomes drew both her eighth and nine round games to maintain her sole lead. She is still 1.5 points ahead 7.5/9, of her nearest competition at Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024. Mary drew against WIM Sakshi Chitlange and IM Elena Sedina (ITA) in the final double round of the tournament. She is now a win away from becoming the champion of the tournament, while a draw may also prove to be enough. WIM Mounika Akshaya scored a fine victory over WGM Uurtsaikh Uuriintuya (MGL). WGM Mary Ann Gomes scored her fourth win in-a-row to increase her sole lead by a staggering two points at 6.5/7. She capitalized her opportunity when WIM M Mahalakshmi erred in the endgame. The seventh round of Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024 had five decisive games just like the first round. WGM Nino Maisuradze (FRA) won her first game of the event against WIM Sakshi Chitlange. Sarayu Velpula bounced back with a win by trapping her opponent, WIM Angela Franco Valencia's (COL) queen. FIDE was established in 1924. We are now in 2024 and the organization has now existed for 100 years. In order to celebrate this occasion they have launched their online store. This has products ranging from clothing, accessories and collectibles. Velammal AICF WGM 2024 R5-6: Mary sacs her queen to slay Sarayu

WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated V Rindhiya and Sarayu Velpula to increase her sole lead at Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024. Mary showed her positional understanding beating Rindhiya in Round 5. In the sixth round, Mary made a nice queen sacrifice which did not give her an immediate upper hand. However, her position was relatively easier to play and eventually she went on to win against Sarayu. Mary is now at 5.5/6. IM Elena Sedina (ITA) and WIM Sakshi Chitlange are the only two on her trail at 4/6 each. Sakshi made two short draws against WIM Mounika Akshaya and Elena. Round 7 starts at 10 a.m. IST. 29-year-old quadriplegic, the first Neuralink user, plays chess online using BCI

29-year-old Noland Arbaugh became the first user of Neuralink. He mentioned in the livestream that about eight years ago, he had a freak diving accident. It dislocated his C4 and C5 which made him quadriplegic. He is paralyzed and has no sensation of movement below the shoulders. "I love playing chess and so this is one of the things that you all have enabled me to do. Something that I wasn't able to do much, the last few years." - Noland says while we see the cursor moving on the screen controlled by his brain which is named, brain computer interface. WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated WGM Uurtsaikh Uuriintuya (MGL) to gain sole lead at Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024. Mary scored an emphatic victory to move ahead of the rest at 3.5/4. WIM Sakshi Chitlange won her game against WIM M Mahalakshmi when the latter made a one-move blunder. It could have been a different outcome had she not made the blunder as her opponent made an inaccuracy. V Rindhiya outplayed WGM Nino Maisuradze (FRA). WIM Mounika Akshaya registered her first victory of the event against WIM Monnisha G K.
