Dubai Police Global Chess Challenge: China's Yu Yangyi Leads as India's SL Narayanan Eyes to enter 2700 club

The UAE has long been renowned for hosting prestigious chess tournaments, and from May 3 to May 13, enthusiasts will witness another thrilling event: the US$125,000 "Dubai Police Global Chess Challenge" tournament, organized by the Dubai Police Headquarters and Sports Affairs Department. Drawing 357 players from 42 countries worldwide, the "Police Global Chess Challenge" promises excitement. With a lineup boasting 172 titled players, including 49 Grand Masters, and an average rating of 2456, anticipation runs high. China's Yu Yangyi, with a rating of 2728, claims the top seed position, followed by Amin Tabatabaei (2707) and Artemiev Vladislav (2705). Notably, India's SL Narayanan, rated at 2695, stands poised to join the prestigious 2700 club, marking a significant milestone for Indian chess. It's worth mentioning that this prize fund is the biggest ever in UAE, adding another layer of excitement to this captivating tournament.

Tapan Badamundi wins 12th KT Global School All Odisha Rating Open 2024

Top two seeds Tapan Badamundi and Harshit Ranjan Sahu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 12th KT Global School All Odisha Rating Open 2024. Tapan won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Top seed, Harshit had to settle for second place. Six players scored 7/9. Out of them, 13-year-old Shrihan Sabat was placed third. Tapan drew against the eventual runner-up, Harshit and defeated the second runner-up, Shrihan. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹120000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by and at KT Global School in Khordha, Odisha from 11th to 15th April 2024. This is Tapan's second tournament triumph in 2024. Chess Houseboat 2024 will take place this November in Kerala

The colorful Chess Houseboat 2024 tournament will take place from 23rd to 30th November 2024. It is once again scheduled to take place at God's own country, the state of Kerala. . The new attractions this year are the three different places of stay: at the floating houseboat itself in the Vembanadu lake, a beachfront resort at Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala, and a majestic Dutch fort at Cochin. Kaustuv Kundu dominates 6th Bangalore Rating Open 2024

Top seed IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win 6th Bangalore Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Nitin S and Lokesh N scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000 + trophy, ₹75000 and ₹65000 each respectively. The five-day ten round Rating Open tournament was organized by Innovators Chess Academy at Silicon City Academy of Secondary Education in Bengaluru, Karnataka from 7th to 11th April 2024. Pertamina Indonesian GM and IM Tournaments 2024 start in Jakarta

Pertamina Indonesian GM and IM Round-Robin tournaments started on 23rd April 2024. Pertamina and Bank Mandiri are the two sponsors of the tournaments with the former, Pertamina being the main sponsor. The total prize fund is US$ 20900. Each of the two events features 12 players making a total of 24 players participating from eight different countries across the world. The objective of this tournament is to produce more GMs and IMs. The President of PERCASI (All Indonesian Chess Federation) - GM Utut Adianto officially opened the tournament. Records were shattered and history was made at FIDE Candidates 2024. In fact, history was already made before the event began. Two Candidates events - Open and Women taking place simultaneously for the first time at the same hall. A brother-sister duo of R Praggnanandhaa and R Vaishali playing the Candidates for the first time. Highest number of Indians taking part. At the conclusion of the event, D Gukesh created a lot of records - youngest ever to win Candidates and become challenger to the World Championship. Sudhir Kumar Sinha wins Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa Memorial Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024

Sudhir Kumar Sinha and FM Rupesh Jaiswal (NEP) scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa Memorial Mayor Cup Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. The seventh round battle between them ended in a draw. Suroj Maharjan scored sole 7.5/9 to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was NRs. 1001000 (approx. ₹625525). The top three prizes were NRs. 200000 + trophy, 110000 and 60000 each respectively. This is Sudhir's first rating tournament triumph since June 2019. Apart from Sudhir, four more Indians made a top ten finish. Rishabh Nishad and Raghav Srivathsav V scored 7/9 each to be placed fifth and sixth. 17-year-old Gukesh becomes the youngest ever to win FIDE Candidates 2024, creates history

The 17-year-old prodigy D Gukesh is now a World Championship Challenger. The calm and composed teenager is not worried about becoming the youngest ever to win FIDE Candidates tournament. He became the second Indian after Vishy Anand to win a Candidates. From winning individual Gold at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, the boy went to play the game which Magnus Carlsen enjoyed the most en route to his victory at FIDE World Cup 2023. The teenager seized his final opportunity to qualify for the Candidates 2024 by winning Chennai Grand Masters 2023 in December, organized by us, ChessBase India. We all witnessed this soft-spoken powerhouse's journey to the top. As he said, he is only halfway through. We hope to see him conquer the very mountaintop this year as the World Champion. Zhongyi Tan convincingly clinches FIDE Women's Candidates 2024, Koneru Humpy second

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) drew her final round game against GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) to win FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. Zhongyi scored 9/14 and finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the rest. GM Koneru Humpy defeated GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) to finish second 7.5/14. Tingjie also scored the same and finished third according to tie-breaks. GM Vaishali scored her fifth win in-a-row. She defeated GM Kateryna Lagno in the final round to end up with 7.5/14 and placed fourth. After four losses in-a-row from Round 5 to 9, she made a fantastic comeback by winning her next five games and finished ahead many three stalwarts. Vitaliy Bernadskiy wins 21st BCC Open 2024, Mitrabha Guha second

GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) drew with GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ) to win 21st BCC Open 2024. GM Mitrabha Guha also scored 7.5/9, same as the champion. However, due to tie-break he was placed second. Four players - Denis, IM Srihari L R, GM Sayantan Das and IM James Morris (AUS) scored 7/9 each. They secured third to sixth place respectively. GM Pranesh M is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to be placed tenth. The total prize fund of the tournament was 580000 baht. Gukesh scorches Firouzja, emerges sole leader, moves closer to winning Candidates 2024

FIDE Candidates 2024 is poised for an exciting finish. D Gukesh scored a fantastic win to emerge sole leader 8.5/13 heading into the final round. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) is the sole player to beat Gukesh at this event. The teenager is obviously not going to let it slide easily. His defiance in accepting a subtle draw offer via repetition was a firm show of his determination. Firouja floundered in a difficult endgame. Gukesh had no trouble seizing his opportunity. He will face Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in the final round. Gukesh is just a win away from securing a match for the World Championship. Women's Candidates 2024 R13: Vaishali topples Tingjie, wins four in-a-row

GM Vaishali won her fourth consecutive game in Round 13 of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) made two blunders in a relatively balanced queen endgame. Vaishali had no trouble capitalizing on her opportunity. After losing four games in-a-row, winning the next four is definitely commendable when the field is so strong. Her win ensured GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) gain a full point lead and the Women's World Championship crown remains in China for the foreseeable future. Vitaliy Bernadskiy on the verge of winning 21st BCC Open 2024

GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) defeated one of his coleaders, GM Zong-Yuan Zhao (AUS) in the penultimate round of 21st BCC Open 2024. He has emerged sole leader 7/8. The Ukrainian is followed by five players trailing by a half point. They are - FM Reja Neer Manon (BAN), IM Srihari L R, GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ), GM Mitrabha Guha and IM James Morris (AUS). Reja is the sole player who has norm chances. He will be up against the newly crowned Commonwealth 2024 champion - Mitrabha. Khelo Chess India Fundraiser: A Significant Step with Chess Enthusiasts

The ChessBase India initiative, "Khelo Chess India," launched in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, has successfully organized over 30 rapid and blitz tournaments during the past 16 months. Our aim is to continuously organize high-level chess events to boost the momentum of chess in Madhya Pradesh. However, organizing chess tournaments has become a greater challenge than before. In recent times, the number of classical tournaments has rapidly declined, prompting ChessBase India to plan for International FIDE-rated tournaments in Madhya Pradesh. The plan is to host these tournaments four times a year to fill this gap. In this endeavor, we aimed to make these tournaments accessible to a wider audience by minimizing entry fees. To achieve this, during the FIDE Candidates Tournament, Hindi Chessbase India Live Commentary, renowned comedian Samay Raina and ChessBase India Head Niklesh Jain, appealed to the audience, resulting in the collection of a total amount of ₹1,07,760. Sri Lanka's Premier Chess event 2nd Queenstar Open 2024 starts in a week

GM Deepan Chakravarthy won the inaugural edition of Queenstar Rating Open 2023. IM Raahul VS became the Champion of the Blitz tournament. The second edition of the event will take place from 27th April to 1st May. It boasts a total prize fund of LKR 2.3 million (approx. ₹634800). The entry fee is FREE for all players rated above 1900. There are special conditions being offered for foreign players with a rating higher than 2400. The tournament registration closes in two days on 22nd April. As of now 213 players including a GM and two WIMs have already registered.
