দাবাড়ু (Dabaru) movie inspired by the life of Surya Sekhar Ganguly is out now on theaters

Indian films have a lot of movies based on sports, be it biopic or slightly fictionalized. However, one thing it lacked is a movie based completely around chess. দাবাড়ু (Dabaru) is the first movie in Indian cinema which completely revolves around chess. It is not a biopic of GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. It is inspired by his life. Since it is the movie about Surya's life, he ensured that the technical aspects of chess is correct as that's the first thing chess players and enthusiasts look for any kind of discrepancy. Samriddhaa Ghosh and Arindam Mukherjee were the Chess Coordinators. They ensured the chess technicalities are correct. Harikrishnan A Ra wins 7th Mimosa Rating Open 2024

IM Harikrishnan A Ra and Niccolo Baldeschi (ITA) scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 each at won 7th Mimosa Open 2024. Harikrishnan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Niccolo secured second place. They both finished a full point ahead of the rest. Pietro Mirri (ITA) was adjudged third scoring 3.5/5. The total prize fund in Open A was €500. The top three prizes were €250 + trophy, €150 and €100 each respectively. The three-day five-round tournament was organized by Mimosa SSD at Washington 33 in Milan, Italy from 24th to 26th April 2024. This is Harikrishna's third rating tournament triumph of the month and overall fifth of the year.

Arjun Erigaisi will be the top seed at Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024

Arjun Erigaisi will make his debut at Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024 in Jermuk, Armenia. He will be the top seed in this Category 17 tournament. Arjun will be seen in action with the defending champion - Samuel Sevian (USA), M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI), Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU), Haik M Martirosyan (ARM), Matthias Bluebaum (GER), Shant Sargsyan (ARM), Volodar Murzin, Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) and Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM). The tournament will take place at Jermuk Ashkarh Health Center in Vayots Dzor, Armenia from 9th to 18th June 2024. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 18400). P Shyam Nikhil becomes the 85th Grandmaster of India

IM P Shyam Nikhil became the 85th Indian to achieve the Grandmaster title on Sunday 12th May 2024 at Dubai Police Masters 2024. He drew with GM Jinshi Bai (CHN) in the final round to secure his final GM-norm. Shyam earned his first GM-norm way back in September 2011 at 4th Mumbai Mayor's Cup. In the following month, he scored his second GM-norm at 46th National Premier 2011. Five months later in May 2012 he got a published rating 2502. A few of his norms were missed and got cancelled due to technicality. He had to score his final GM-norm outside of India. 12 years later in Dubai, the same place where he crossed 2500 in 2012, is where he became a Grandmaster. Maximus Magnus Carlsen wins ten in-a-row to become a clear champion at Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2024

Magnus Carlsen won ten games in-a-row to win Grand Chess Tour Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2024. He scored 26/36, finished a half point ahead of Wei Yi (CHN). Despite being 2.5 points ahead of Carlsen, he scored 1.5/2 in the first two games, then he lost to Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL). Immediately in the followed round Magnus defeated him to join him in the lead. The world no.1 scored another hat-trick to increase his win streak to ten games. He drew the last two games against Anish Giri (NED) and Arjun Erigaisi to become a clear champion. Duda finished third scoring 19.5/36. Pranav V wins Dubai Police Masters 2024, Aravindh second and Pranesh third

The inaugural Dubai Police Global Chess Challenge concluded successfully yesterday, with Indian players securing the top four positions in the Masters category. Pranav V emerged as the tournament champion, while Arvind Chitambaram secured the runner-up position. Boasting a prize pool of $125,000, it stood as the largest tournament in the history of UAE, leaving an indelible mark on participants with its impeccable arrangements and the intensity of battles waged on the top board during the final round. The quality of matches showcased throughout the tournament was truly exceptional. Notably, twelve players attained the title norm, a commendable feat. Shyam Nikhil of India and Nogerbek of Kazakhstan ascended to the esteemed title of Grandmaster, with three players achieving the GM-norm, eight securing the IM-norm, and one attaining the WIM-norm. Aaryan Varshney perfect at 1st Emergers Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM Aaryan Varshney won 1st Emergers Rapid Rating Open 2024 with a 100% score 9/9. The IM-elect Aaryan finished a full point ahead of the rest. Daksh Goyal scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. His sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion, Aaryan in the penultimate round. Five players - FM Namitbir Singh Walia, FM Garv Gaur, FM Ojasva Singh, Sundram Kumar and IM Aaditya Dhingra scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. The two-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Emergers Chess Academy on 27th and 28th April 2024 at Orchids - The International School in Sonipat, Haryana. This is Aaryan's sixth overall and second rating tournament triumph of the year.

Superbet Blitz 2024 R1-9: Praggnanandhaa outplays Carlsen as the latter struggles to catch Wei Yi

R Praggnanandhaa started his Blitz day with a win over Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL). In the second round, he defeated Magnus Carlsen (NOR) for the first time in a rated game at Grand Chess Tour Superbet Blitz 2024. The teenager outplayed the world no.1 in the endgame, which is the Norwegian's forte. However, the euphoria probably got the better of him as Praggnanandhaa went on to lose the next two games. He is now at 14.5/27. Wei Yi (CHN) started his day with a loss against D Gukesh. He won the next two games before saving a lost endgame against Carlsen. Then the Chinese had another five-game winning streak to extend his lead by 2.5 points. He is now at 20.5/27, followed by Carlsen 18/27, Praggnanandhaa 14.5/27 and Arjun Erigaisi 14/27. Hanyu Sun wins Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 Open C

Ertan Ozdogan (TUR), Luca Ferraro (ITA) and Hanyu Sun (CHN) were the coleaders 7/8 heading into the final round of Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 Open C (<1600). Luca lost to Daniele Isaia (ITA), Ertan won against Krishnan Vishwanathan and Hanyu defeated Manuel Serra (ITA). Both Hanyu and Ertan ended up with the same score 8/9 each. Hanyu became champion due to better tie-break score, Ertan secured second place. Hanyu's sole loss of the event was against the eventual runner-up, Ertan in Round 3. Luca finished third. Ertan's solitary defeat was against Luca in Round 5. The total prize fund of the entire festival was €50000. The top three prizes in Open C were €1200, €800 and €600 along with a trophy each. Wei Yi (CHN) continued his winning streak from the previous day at Grand Chess Tour Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2024. He defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and D Gukesh to register his fifth consecutive win. R Praggnanandhaa halted his winning spree as the teenager drew with him in the ninth round. Wei topped the Rapid event scoring 13/18 and gained sole lead. Before the draw, Praggnanandhaa started his day with a solid draw against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and then had another lukewarm draw against his good friend Arjun Erigaisi. Despite encountering two consecutive draws in the recent rounds, their dominance remains unchallenged. Amidst the competitive atmosphere, Round 6 witnessed a notable inauguration by Mohammad AlMulla, an accomplished astronaut and skilled chess player. Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir dominates 16th Chessmate Inter School Team Rapid Rating 2024

Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir scored an unbeaten 15/16 to win 16th Chessmate - Inter School Rapid Rating Team Tournament 2024. They defeated the defending champion, South Point High School A by 2.5-1.5 in the third round. They finished a staggering three points ahead of the field. Sudhir Memorial Institute (Girls) overall secured second place scoring 12/16. However, they became champion in the Girls category. DPS Ruby Park and South Point High School B also scored 12/16 each. They were placed second and third in the Open section. Among the girls, Bhavan's Gangabux and Gokhale Memorial Girls School scored 7/16 each to secure second and third position. D Gukesh bounced back on the second day of Grand Chess Tour Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2024. D Gukesh won two games in-a-row against R Praggnanandhaa and Vincent Keymer (GER). The teenager finished the day by salvaging a draw after the World no.1 Magnus Carlsen (NOR) missed his winning chances. Praggnanandhaa shook off the cobwebs by crushing Anish Giri (NED) in 21 moves. Then he went on to beat Keymer who suffered his third loss of the event. Magnus won an exciting battle against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in Round 5. Magnus and Wei Yi (CHN) are currently in the lead 8/12, followed by Praggnanandhaa and Kirill Shevchenko (ROU) at 7/12 each. Abdusattorov, Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi are at 6/12 each.
