23/05/2024 - IM Divya Deshmukh drew against IM Leya Garifullina to win the Sharjah Challengers 2024. In the rook and bishop vs. rook endgame, Divya got a couple of chances in the end to push for a win. However, she decided not to take any unwarranted risk in the final round. A draw was enough for her to become the champion and that's what she did. The reigning Asian Continental Women's champion, has earned herself a spot in the Masters section of the next edition. GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) drew against GM Arjun Erigaisi to win 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. GM Volodar Murzin, GM Sam Shankland (USA) and GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) also scored the same 6.5/9 each. 23/05/2024 - The Candidates Tournament 2024 took place in Toronto, Canada. From 3rd-22nd April 2024, it was a festival of chess at the city with so many top players staying there and playing one of the most important tournament of their lives! The tournament turned out to be quite exciting as well with many twists and turns. Sanket Nawle lives in Toronto, and is an excellent photographer. He tried to capture a few moments throughout the days outside the playing hall - and managed to take some beautiful photos! 23/05/2024 - IM Ritviz Parab and IM Ethan Vaz scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 2nd Unity Club Rapid Rating Open 2024. Ritviz won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. 12-year-old Ethan had to settle for second place. Seven players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them FM Apoorv Kamble was placed third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹251000. The top three prizes were ₹55000, ₹33000 and ₹22000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rating tournament was organized by Unity Club at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, Goa on 27th and 28th April 2024. This is Ritviz's second rating tournament victory of the year.
22/05/2024 - Two GM and one IM-norm tournaments in Quang Ninh has produced a total of two GM-norms and four IM-norms. FM Pham Tran Gia Phuc (VIE) and IM Prin Laohawirapap (THA) scored the GM-norms in GM1 tournament. The IM-norm scorers are: FM Banh Gia Huy (VIE), FM Masruri Rahman (INA), FM Christian Gian Carlo Arca (PHI) and CM Dinh Nho Kiet (VIE). FM FT IA Peter Long (MAS) who participated in the IM A group, writes all. He also mentions how Vietnam's third GM Nguyen Anh Dung, GM IA Bui Vinh's very close friend stepped in to help with these tournaments. 22/05/2024 - IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored a perfect 9/9 to win Motilalji Firodiya Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the field. 12-year-old Prathamesh Sherla scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Atharv Soni, Harsh Ghadge and Yash Kapadi scored 7.5/9 each. They secured third to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300006. The top three prizes were ₹51000 + trophy, ₹31000 and ₹21000 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Ahmednagar District Chess Circle at Badi Sajan Mangal Karaylaya in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra from 3rd to 7th May 2024. 22/05/2024 - Chandigarh-born Indian origin, 16-year-old IM Siddharth Jagadeesh became the fifth Grandmaster of Singapore. He earned his final GM-norm by scoring a smashing win against Andrey Esipenko. GM Arjun Erigaisi made a quick draw against GM Alexey Sarana (SRB). The coleaders GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) and GM Sam Shankland (USA) also did the same. GM Aravindh Chithambaram suffered his second consecutive loss of the event. It was against GM Volodar Murzin. Bardiya, Murzin and Shankland are leading 6/8. Arjun is the sole Indian at 5.5/8. IM Divya Deshmukh drew with GM Vladimir Burmakin to stay in the lead 6.5/8. 21/05/2024 - V S Nandish and Shanmathi Sree S became Tamil Nadu State Under-17 Open and Girls 2024 Champions. Nandish scored an unbeaten 8/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. S Gokul Krishna, S Haridev and N R Jaidambareesh scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fourth place respectively. In the Girls event, Shanmathi scored sole 7.5/9 to become the champion. Six girls - S Kanishka, S Padmini, Theephigaa K P, K Sindhusree, R Charudharshini and P Janani scored 7/9 each. They were placed second to seventh according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000, ₹25000 for each event. The top three prizes were ₹5000 + trophy, ₹4000 + trophy and ₹3500 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Sivakasi Chess Club and Sethu Institute of Technology at Sethu Institute of Technology in Kariapatti, Tamil Nadu from 1st to 5th May 2024. This is Nandish's first rating and third overall tournament triumph of the year. 21/05/2024 - GM Aravindh Chithambaram succumbed to GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) in the seventh round of 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. Aravindh made a couple of terrible blunders, the last one being irrevocable. Similarly, GM Hans Niemann (USA) also made a terrible blunder in an equal pawn endgame against his compatriot - GM Sam Shankland (USA). These two -outcomes resulted in Bardiya and Shankland becoming the coleaders at 5.5/7 each. Top seed, GM Arjun Erigaisi was held to a draw by GM Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI). GM Sankalp Gupta continues his great form. He defeated the Romania no.2, GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac. 20/05/2024 - Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri and Srujan Keerthan Solleti scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 3rd Marvel Rating Open 2024. Bharat won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Srujan secured second place. Four players - FM Md. Imran, Kushal O, FM J Ramakrishna and Majhi Fakir scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by B Rajashekar at Johnson Grammar School in Hyderabad, Telangana from 1st to 5th May 2024. 20/05/2024 - Fischer Random/Freestyle Chess - Won. Casablanca Chess - Conquered. Magnus Carlsen is synonymous with winning chess tournaments. Be it in any format - Classical, Rapid or Blitz, or the ultimate chess tournament - FIDE World Cup, as it has all three formats. Now, Carlsen is winning variants too. "Anything that has to do with chess, I usually want to be reckoned with", said the World no.1. It is clear that the world's best played player only distanced himself from the Classical format but certainly not from chess. He scored an unbeaten 4.5/6 to win Casablanca Chess 2024. 20/05/2024 - GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew with GM Samuel Shankland (USA) to maintain his sole lead 5/6 at 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. The top seed of the tournament, GM Arjun Erigaisi got back to his winning ways. He defeated GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP) to register his fourth win of the event. GM Pranav V won against his second consecutive 2664+ opponent, GM Samuel Sevian (USA). GM Pa Iniyan made a nice tactical save in the endgame against the Czech Republic no.2 - GM Thai Dai Van Nguyen. In the Challengers, IM Divya Deshmukh shared the point against GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez (PAR) in a position where she could have continued. IM Nitish Belurkar defeated GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY) and IM Viani Antonio Dcunha scored a victory over IM Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov (UZB) to join the five-way lead 5/6. Teenager Saravanan scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Vijay Shreeram P and Dinesh Rajan M scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹40000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each. 19/05/2024 - Magnus Carlsen (NOR) made a great start at Casablanca Chess 2024. He scored 2.5/3 in the first three rounds. The world no.1 defeated Vishy Anand, drew with Bassem Amin (EGY) and then won against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). The positions were from Chigorin - Steinitiz, World Championship 1889 in Round 1, Xie Jun - Alisa Galliamova, Women's World Championship 1999 and Karpov - Kasparov, World Championship 1985. Nakamura is at 1.5/3, followed by Bassem and Anand at 1/3 each. Will Carlsen dominate the second half of the tournament too or someone will fight back?
