Zhongyi Tan convincingly clinches 4th Cairns Cup, Harika shares third place

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) made a quick 19-move draw against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) to win 4th Cairns Cup 2024. Since a draw was enough for her to finish clear first, there was no point in risking it. The FIDE Women's Candidates 2024 winner scored an unbeaten 6/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) scored her second consecutive win of the event. She defeated IM Alice Lee (USA) in the final round to secure a clear second place 5.5/9. This is also her consecutive second place after the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024. Four players - Kosteniuk, GM Harika Dronavalli, GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), and GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) scored 5/9 each. They shared third place. Harika also remained undefeated. Badrinath wins 1st Jaipur Rating Open 2024

Badrinath S, Arpan Das and Ram Vishal Parab scored 8/9 each at 1st Jaipur Rating Open 2024. Badrinath won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Arpan and Ram Vishal were placed second and third. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹45000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Food for Needy in association with Jaipur District Chess Association at Hotel Amar Palace in Jaipur, Rajasthan from 29th May to 2nd June 2024. This is Badrinath's first rating tournament triumph of the year. Over 3500 players participate in Vietnam National Youth Championship 2024

This most important chess competition in Vietnam is the National Youth Chess Championship. Every year the many provinces, major cities, and clubs send their best young talent. In 2024, this was as many as 53 bringing a total of 3597 players to play in the categories U-6, U-7, U-8, U-9, U-10, and then U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-20 in Bac Giang, Vietnam from 24th May to 3rd June 2024. 4th Cairns Cup R7-8: Anna Muzychuk's win over Kosteniuk helps Zhongyi Tan extend her sole lead

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) extended her sole lead to 5.5/8 at 4th Cairns Cup 2024. GM Anna Muzychuk's (UKR) first and crucial win over GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) in the penultimate round, assisted Zhongyi to gain a full point gap. It means Zhongyi just needs a draw against Kosteniuk in the final round to become the champion. It goes without saying that the tournament is far from over as Kosteniuk has played seven decisive games out of eight. GM Harika Dronavalli survived a scare against Anna in the seventh round. She managed to salvage a half point by going for a perpetual check. In the penultimate round, Harika had a solid draw with the tournament leader, Zhongyi. Five women - GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR), GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), Anna Muzychuk, Kosteniuk and Harika are at 4.5/8 each. Round 9 starts today at 1 p.m. local time, 11:30 p.m. IST. Tata Steel 4th All India Chess Tournament for specially abled Chess players starts on 24th June

The Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rated Specially abled Chess Championship 2024 is taking place in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand this year! The event will run from 24th-28th June at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. This will be a 9-round classical tournament with India's best specially abled chess players taking part! Samarth J Rao won the 3rd edition of this tournament back in 2022. A total of 64 players are taking part in the tournament from various states. The tournament is organized by Tata Steel Limited and Tata Steel Foundation, under the aegis of Chess Federation for physically disabled. We will be covering this tournament live from the venue! FIDE World Cup for U-8, U-10 and U-12 players kicks off on 23rd June at Batumi, Georgia

In just two days from now, a brand new tournament kicks off. It is the inaugural edition of the FIDE World Cup for youngsters - U-8, U-10 and U-12 chess players from all around the World will take part in this event! The tournament will take place from 23rd-29th June 2024 at Batumi, Georgia. The format is a mix of swiss and knockout, with exciting prizes for the winner of each category!  The first three winners of each age category and gender will receive free full board accommodation for the World Cadets Championship later in the same year. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) drew with GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) to maintain her sole lead 4/6 at 4th Cairns Cup 2024. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) scored her third win of the event. Her opponent, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) got a substantial advantage in the rook and minor piece endgame. However, she traded the rooks at an inopportune moment. It evaporated her advantage and allowed Kosteniuk to equalize. Mariya made another mistake in the resultant minor piece endgame which allowed Kosteniuk to win the game. GM Harika Dronavalli drew against IM Anna Zatonskih (USA). Both Kosteniuk and Harika are trailing the sole leader by a half point at 3.5/6 each. They are followed by five players at 3/6. IM Rahul Sangma scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win the inaugural CircleChess Bangalore Rapid Rating Open 2024. Rahul finished a half point ahead of the rest. Five players - IM Harikrishnan A Ra, FM Kunal M, GM P Shyam Nikhil, IM Nitin S and FM Senthil Maran K. The total prize fund was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. That's not all, they also received CircleChess software subscriptions. Shreyas Das wins 1st Khelo Chess India International Classical FIDE Rating tournament

Shreyas Das from Delhi has won the Khelo Chess India Classical International Rating Tournament organized by ChessBase India in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh! A total of 174 players participated in this tournament, which was part of the FIDE 100 series being held this year to commemorate the 100th year of the World Chess Federation. The great thing is that the members of Hindi ChessBase India YouTube channel played a special role in organizing this tournament! This six-day tournament, which was started with the aim of organizing a world-class event at a low entry fee, was successful in its objective. Through this event, about 25 new players got their FIDE ratings, while 68 players played classical tournament for the first time and got FIDE ID. Revansh Vaidya of Bhopal secured second place, while Anil Kushwaha of Bhopal secured third place. On the last day of the tournament, a special event was organized under FIDE 100 in which Colombia's female international master Angela Franco and Bhopal's under 10 national champion Madhavendra Pratap Sharma gave a simultaneous exhibition against a total of 20 players. India wins 15 medals at 26th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024 Classical

India won 15 medals - eight individual and seven team at 26th Asian Youth 2024 Classical. Narayani Umesh Marathe lost her final round game. However, her compatriot, Nakshatra Gumudavelly crushed her opponent, Asena Golizadeh (IRI). That win ensured Narayani clinches Gold in Under-8 Girls and Nakshatra Bronze. Top seed of Under-8 Open, Sarbartho Mani scored an important win to secure Silver. Aaradhya Das won her game to secure Bronze in Under-10 Girls. Siddhanth Poonja shattered Aadik Theophane Lenin's Silver medal chances by winning the game. He got Bronze in Under-12 Open. Pratitee Bordoloi made a tough save to salvage a draw and earn Silver in Under-12 Girls. CM Velavaa Ragavesh scored in a must-win game to earn Bronze in Under-16 Open. Arjun Erigaisi is playing phenomenally for a really long time. Despite winning 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024 with a round to spare, he did not want a quick draw. He kept fighting against Manuel Petrosyan (ARM). Tried to look for chances. While all other games got over much earlier, Arjun played on. The game only ended in a draw via perpetual check as there was no better choice left for the current World no.4. He scored an unbeaten 6.5/9, with a performance of 2823 and gained 7.2 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2778.1. Nihal Sarin wins Cluj Grand Prix Rapid 2024

Nihal Sarin won Cluj Grand Prix Rapid 2024 by winning a must-win Armageddon with the white pieces. This is the second leg of the Romania GP 2024. The profusely talented teenager scored 8.5/10 and so did GM Imre Balog (HUN). Their seventh round battle against each other ended in a draw. Thus they had to play Armageddon. Nihal won Armageddon to become the champion. Balog finished second. GM Jaime Santos Latasa (ESP) scored 8/10 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was €30000. The top three prizes were €5000, €3000 and €2000 each respectively. A total of 314 players including 22 GMs, 11 IMs and 3 WGMs have registered from 17 countries across the world. Narayani Umesh Marathe bounced back with a victory in the penultimate round of 26th Asian Youth Under-8 Girls 2024. She convincingly defeated Azaliya Balakanova (IRI) to move to 7.5/8. A win makes her a clear champion. However, a draw might still prove to be enough to win the Gold. Under-10 Girls: Bijesh Divi lost her game today. However, she still has medal chances. Under-12 Open: Aadik Theophane Lenin needs a draw in the final round against Siddhanth Poonja to secure a medal. However, a win may fetch him a better one, even a Gold maybe. Under-12 Girls: Pratitee Bordoloi leveled her score with her rival Le Vy Tran (VIE).
